For whatever the reasons it was a real pain. Builder looking for decisions cause of the tight build and it was almost like the camera panned up from him to the finished house..
I personally don't get it. I know the area well, absolutely nothing wrong with it but it's full on suburbia - thousands of replica houses in estates like Shanard, Shanowen, melting into Lorcan and Shantalla. They basically all merge. There's a row of shops here and there (chipper, newsagents) but nothing aesthetically pleasing anywhere. No village atmosphere. Just house upon house.
Like, I suspect, most people, I'd use the million or so to buy a nice house in Malahide, Howth, Sutton, Greystones, Dalkey etc. and start fresh. But - each to their own. Her money, her call. I'm in medicine myself, she'd be known as brilliant but slightly......tricky.
She's on a high wage she can afford to spend 400,k plus to upgrade the house to a larger dwelling I think she wants to stay close to her family I agree she could spend the money to buy a house in a more upmarket area
I presume she also wants to be close to the hospital she works in eg not increase commuting time also I presume the new build will be more energy efficient
Still it's a nice quiet area to live in
This house was recently sold around the corner. Internally it was also very dated.
To sell the old house, buy this one and redevelop it, would have yielded a vastly superior home in the same area.
I think they said the kid was 8, in a few years his days of playing on the green will have passed.
Was that said in the programme? If they got 26k of SEAI grants, as was indicated, they would have needed a minimum B2.
They mentioned it alright, might have been B2, just thought it odd with such a spend they couldn't get to A rating. They had a heat pump in the garden. I'd have assumed everything was insulated.. just checked it was b2

I've never understood that about suburbs anywhere. How more people don't put their own stamp on these replica houses. I'd hate estate living tbh.
Many would think if you want a large "statement" extension, it would not look so out of place at the back of a building or anywhere other than the front of a house in a semi-d estate. But everyone is different: some people like large scale monuments in a graveyard for example, others do not.
I think we can agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it is a good job we are all different. I like many aspects of the inside and back of the houses he does, letting light in etc. Interesting to watch.

By George I think you've got it.
And off they / he goes again 😫
Imagine paying thousands upon thousands of euro for Dermot Bannon and then asking him just to blend it in with what’s already there. It’s like hiring Gordon Ramsey to grill some fish fingers.
imagine being so angry about a light entertainment programme.
There's more to it than meets the eye. A curious obsession.
Not being smart isn't Dermot always on about blending things in seamlessly with it's surroundings?
They
Most architects in domestic work respond to a brief from their clients or to their expressed desires during the consultation process.
Whats the address for this house. I'd like to look at planning file
ok looking at the planning file, Planning Authority requested further info re roof detail at boundary. Bannon submitted revised design with the raised parapet which accurately reflects what has been built.
I didnt see the longer front window though.
Probably took a chance that they can just apply for retention.
Who would bother complaining though?
Yes, missed that earlier;
Never noticed Room To Improve on. Amazon Prime before. Advertised between Fleabag and Four In A Bed.
What a washy set of ‘observations and ’ they cannot be called ‘objections’ . Point. No 4 is laughable because the very reason that they state in the point is TOTALLY ignored when the client make ABSOLUTLY reference to the front extension
I think the front elevation has flaws and some issues. The gutter detail circled above would never have worked.
But it's a little disingenuous to post the first design submitted and not the design that was approved. Pretty misleading given the number of claims that the final build deviated from the planning grant.
The intal design was posted by others first. The front of finished building also differs from the second approved design by having a much larger upstairs window.
It was posted more than once, I quoted the two posts I seen. May have been others, not relevant to the point though.
You said “plans show the 'Box' going up the gutter, not 5 rows of tiles higher”. There’s a clear implication there. But the approved plans do show a parapet. The posts were misleading. Multiple posters took the elevation posted as face value and commented on the extra height. I'm not suggesting it was intentionally misleading, to be clear.
Im aware the window was changed. That doesn’t affect my point above.
FWIW, it wasn’t a bigger window. It was taller, but also much narrower. The installed window is better than the square one submitted imo. I’m unsure if council would have an issue with the change.
Rectangular window is far more elegant IMO.
Does anyone know of the interactions with planning that went on here?
I would say she is 55, so had her one and only child at 45; the Father looked older again. They seemed like a lovely family. They ended up with a really nice house that is in a location that they value.
I too would prefer a counter / island without any utilities; cutting a big hole in a nice piece of granite on the island seems a waste. really dislike the sink in the island - you're sitting at the breakfast bar and looking in on a sink with dirty dishes!!
I only watched this last night so on catch up. I liked it overall. I didn't like the choice of kitchen units but Dermot seems to love that type lately. I think I'd prefer that lock up garage for the bikes than to look at the bikes in the driveway covered with tarpulin. They've to find a home for the wheelie bins too.
Not sure if I'm allowed post it here but 18 Shanowen Grove. I see the house two doors up sold last month for €514k.
I always wonder if Room to Improve affects other houses in the estate. Can’t be great when Dermot rocks up in his coat and talks about how freezing it is in a similar house to one you are trying to sell.
There was a build a couple of years ago where they had a double plot and built a brand new house in the second plot for nearly the same price as the original house they sold in the first. Are the people who bought the original house in there freezing bitter towards the neighbours?
All houses for sale nowadays publish the BER on their ads.
Anyone buying will understand what the ratings mean.
People would do actual research before buying a house.
