RTE 1: 'Today' with David McCullagh

We have just said goodbye to Sarah McInerney, who many people consider did a splendid job on the "Today" program, and we wish her well in her future career. Experienced broadcaster Claire Byrne steps into the prime role on Monday, and we can be sure she will bring her own good qualities to the program, and we wish her well in her new position.

No doubt we will find much to comment about here, good and bad, and whilst having our diverse opinions we should keep it personally respectful to the presenter and to one another here.

If Claire Byrne thinks that calling a minister incompetent is a personal insult, she needs to go back to journalist school and has no business hosting a flagship current affairs radio show.

It's not the first time her own incompetence and inability to deal with a 'talkative' guest has shown.

Of course he is a nightmare to interview but there are more skilled journalists at RTE who can better handle tricky guests.

He emphasised as transport minister, he's incompetent. And he's perfectly entitled to say that. Claire was very unprofessional and showed her own incompetence as she seemed incapable of dealing with an interesting guest.

thought MOL was great. providing for his employees, obviously annoyed at the press trying to make out he was wrong somehow. and the 2 % carbon emissions is pretty standard figure so 44 % of carbon emissions is from electricity generation so seems like the wrong target for

I thought the same. I was sure she was being bankrolled by that new deposit return quango. She might as well have been. Yes it was an ad. As an aside 6-1 did another one guy the quango this evening.

Very decided and arrogant woman. Particularly so saying “oh if you live alone sure someone will give you a lift to the shops to recycle your stuff” and “well maybe if you get a little backpack the your stuff”. Personally I hope she develops arthritis some day and ends up living alone in a small flat. What a waste of space.

Ossian got a fairly easy ride on his new scheme. A few implied criticisms but seems everyone in RTE is afraid to be seen to be on the wrong side of the new agenda. He got away Scot free with saying he expected there to be far less litter. I doubt if Smyth ever picked up roadside rubbish or he'd know that very little of it will suit his machines and will be left in the dirt and grass as they are by the new treasure hunters he dreams of.
