I would worry about a surgeon who puts hi vis on back to front
but this is obviously the house of their dreams! They want to be in the old family home, they want to be beside her sister, they have an "only" child so playing with his friends and cousins is very important. Nana lives down the road, they can all play out on the green. This IS the house of their dreams and they want to modernise it. They have no problem with money and fair play to them. She works as a surgical oncologist, saving peoples lives (and some not I'm sure). I don't have a problem with them doing this if they have the money . Go for it!

They said they don't want to move because of the area and their son.
Its easy to say for an outsider to do that but for some, there is a real emotional attachment to a house and area that money cant buy.

I say they bought the house cheap enough originally, so the cost of the renovation is probably their only mortgage

They want to be in this area, they want to be beside each other.
They absolutely know what they want. They are extremely intelligent people and have obviously been planning this for a long time.
Not everyone wants the 10 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms and room for a pony 😂
I don't think they care much for a garden. The kids play out on the green and sure the young fella will be in the Royal College of Surgeons in a few years.
They seem like really nice people who don't want to complain.
All depends on what's actually important to you.
Any dream house with a big garden within Dublin will cost a lot more than 1.2 million.
