I think that this stage of the game, Secret Service might actually start to turn up to offer security to nominees. I’m not sure how this actually happens and will welcome correction, but I think even before someone becomes President Elect, the Secret Service are in the picture somewhere to provide protection. Biden & Trump already have Secret Service, but maybe if Haley is seen at least as a possible 3rd option, she make get a couple of agents.
Part of me is wondering if the higher ups in the GOP (who I imagine are well sick of Trump) are using Haley as a sly way to derail his chances of being elected. Unlike 2016, there’s now only one candidate for the “never Trump” crowd to rally behind, so there actually a chance this time of beating him. He’ll probably still win the nomination, but I wonder if the amount of nonsense MAGA will throw at the Haley camp will dissuade GOP voters from supporting Trump in the General Election.
Even if Trump loses this year, I don’t expect him to just go away and he’ll likely try his best to maintain his grip on the GOP. But another loss might be enough to give the GOP a chance to find someone they have a hope of controlling to be their next candidate.
I think Secret Service protection at the candidate stage is decided on the basis of need/threat assessment rather than anything to do with likelihood of winning.
