on RTE 1 TV
Yes with Daithi.
just in case people thought she was covering for claire byrne on her "Today" show !!
In keeping with the rest of the show, that ask Dave jingle is painful 😩
Theres a dance tune they have played twice every day for it feels like months. Im in work so I have to suffer it every day. It starts off with a woman singing and then the tune kicks in. why, why, why? Every bloddy day.
for those of us that don't listen to Today FM, thanks for narrowing the tune down to that 😀
I know, I know.Lol. Ill ask somebody in work the name of it.
Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding-Miracle. Agggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
Interesting, Louise is back and is presenting her show from the Red FM studios
I think Maura Derrane is back on Today this afternoon - she usually does Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Sinead Kennedy is the usual Monday and Tuesday presenter but she's on maternity leave, and because poor Maura can't bear a five-day work week (God love her), Louise (and others) have stepped in.
I would presume she agreed to the work before getting her own show. She could have booked the work before Pamela Joyce had even decided to leave for all we know and she didn’t want to cancel
oh i hear ya! i go collecting kids from playschool, in the car for 10 mins max and i still catch it at leas 3 times a week
I was actually trying to pick up on a Today FM show being presented from another studio in the GoLoud network.
I think KC's show is also broadcast from Cork.
Jaysus we are going to be hearing about this festival in Vegas ad nauseum for the next while. I may need to sabotage the work radio 😅
I find myself gradually switching away from Today FM. Used to be the only channel I listen to in the van all morning/afternoon during work, but now I move to local radio after Dempsey and briefly return for Music Master. Will stick to Ray Foley if I am still on the road by then.
Dave's show has become increasingly like a housewives favourite with all the banal discussions, while Louis Cantillion has brought nothing to the table yet (apart from 'ceoil' and 'tar eis an nuacht').
They started the show the other day with Maria getting all flustered about being called "the lady" in the supermarket. Tuned in again much later, and they were still going on about it, asking for other examples.
Spent half of Thursday morning doing the "what would you do with the 100k cash machine" shtick again. Painful.
Slightly off-topic, but not sure where else this fits, but there's a very good interview with former Today FM stalwart Phil Cawley on Mario Rosenstock's podcast. A few interesting stories from the old Radio Ireland / early Today FM days.
And he also specifically mentions this sub-forum. So, Hi Phil!
What does he mention about it?
towards the end, about 48-49 mins in. He's talking about social media / discussion boards in general and mentions something about an old clip of him from his 2FM days posted on here.
Tired of Matt Cooper promoting his books and podcast.
The last word used to be decent but rarely tune in anymore.
Phil also told a story about the early days of the station, they were giving away a hi-fi and got no entries whatsoever.
I miss Phil. He would crop up everywhere all summer long as he was a great stand in on any show, so always reminds me of days out and stuff.
Same goes for the Saturday morning show
Phil was the 80s / 90s old school / 'last DJ' to depart Today FM.
Only Ian is hanging in there and he goes back to the late 1970s...but he has since become a more breakfast 'presenter', than a "DJ"
The rest of them in their 20s/30s are not real genuine DJs that most were not born when the pirates shut down in 1988.
To be fair, the pirates did not go away completely after 1988. Ray Foley was on '90s pirate Pulse, for example.
Edit: But of course, if you were born after 1988, it is far less likely you that you turned up on pirates, but still possible.
Edit #2(!): So the following presenters on Today FM were with pirates: Ian Dempsey, Ray Foley, Declan Pierce, Alison Curtis, Steve K, KC and Claire Beck. Ian was late '70s and early 1980. The rest were on '90s pirates, with at least one (Alison) going into the '00s with Phantom FM. John Caddell, Assistant Programme and Content Director, came from pirates in the '90s and '00s. Is there anybody else left on Today FM with a pirate past, whether presenting or behind the scenes?
I think there were still pirates as recently as 2003?
There where pirates in the 10's too. From 2010-2014ish Sunshine/ Choice FM was on the airwaves.
Apreciate info Declan on 90s pirates and very aware many dance pirates were active and popular in the 90s / 00s, especially in Dublin.
but I dont consider Ray Foley, Declan Pierce or Alison Curtis etc as DJs from the golden age the Irish pirate era where Ian and Phil came from...pre 88 - that was my point. Ian is the survivor on Today FM and with Bryan Dobson departing RTE soon, sadly there are only a handful left on Irish radio.
BTW i think Steve K may have been on an 80s pirate?
A number of pirates were raided in 2003, but there was still quite a bit of activity after that. There are still oldies pirates operating on weekends to this day. Have a look at the Bandscan Thread. (And it's not just the stations that are oldies in some cases!)
