New thread as old one is nearly at 10000 post limit.
Old thread
Could definitely see him grab 1 or 2 more before he hangs up the clubs.
In fairness with all the top 5/10s it does seem law of averages , he will. I could see it happening when it’s not expected funny enough. Like when he drops down to 40/50 in the world.
That it's, he probably has 5 or 6 more years where he could stay around the top, another 5 when he could stay top 50, no reason why he couldn't bag one then. Standard is phenomenal at the moment though so needs to be on it 100% all week to get over the line.
Let’s not get carried away. There are many reasons why he hasn’t won a major in going on 10 years, those reasons will no doubt exist until he retires.
What I find curious is how he never learns to shut his mouth. Why talk himself up about Augusta having won this tournament? He just can't help himself. Seems to me he insists on putting pressure on himself by talking about Augusta months out.
So that was his 38th win as a pro, is there any other Irish player that comes close?
Remember Tom Watson at 60 came close to winning the British open a few years back. Rory could manage the same at that age and maybe go 1 better and win.
Id love to see Rory get another Major soon but he can still be in the running for many more years to come.
Golf is only about the majors when it comes to legacy. Rory is not the best from this island “by some distance”. Roy Keane and George Best were both at the pinnacle of a worldwide sport too.
Rorys great and I hope 2024 is the year he breaks the drought but rein it in.
He is a distant second behind Katie Taylor if dominating your sport on the world stage over an extended period is the metric used.
You couldn't put female boxing ahead of golf in my opinion.
In my mind
Roy Keane still number 1
Rory a close 2nd...but will overtake Roy if he picks up a few more majors.
Just my feel on it..female boxing is a minority sport ..by a long way...
I suspect some would argue golf is a minority sport in comparison to football, but it’s all about perspective. It’s not that I put boxing, women or men’s ahead of golf, it’s that I put her achievements in her sport well ahead of his. She is credited with helping to push for female boxing to be accepted as an Olympic sport, and has dominated women’s boxing since winning gold. When it comes to that type of greatness, McIlroy is some way behind.
No weight classes to thin out the talent pool in golf though
There are any number of limiting factors that can be applied to all sports, for instance golfers don’t get punched in the face. But that would be futile, all we can go by is achievements as a metric, and it’s hard to argue against someone who has been the very best, not amongst the best, for over a decade.
No we can analyse it further, you're just choosing not to as it suits your argument. Anyways, not really the purpose of the thread.
You spend a lot of time posting in this thread about him. Why waste so much of your time on someone you don’t like?
Rent free.
TBF, claiming weight classification thins out talent isn’t much of an argument, so what’s the point?
A lot of my time? Hahahahah. Like 10minutes a year? Grow up and behave yourself.
MOD EDIT, you behave! attack the post not the poster please
Haha, ffs…how many professional women boxers are there in the world? Break it down by weight class, organizations, etc and it’s a very small pool she’s competing against.
I would never have been a great Rory fan but in fairness he carries himself well these times ,he is ozzing with confidence ,it seems after all his disapointments in Majors it has made him stronger
Top boxers generally only fight against a small pool of elite fighters. Again, the number of elite golfers may be viewed as relatively small compared to other sports, so don’t be getting all uppity.
As I said, it’s a matter of opinion, I respect your opinion that McIlroy may be top of the list, personally I think Taylor is, sorry if that offends.
But not stronger in the context of winning majors
Well unless you are surfing you will never catch a wave ,I would not rule out a major this year he wont be too far off the mark anyway and its all fine margins on any given day
Ah people have been saying that for 10 years. I think he will win 1 or 2 when he’s world no 50 and no pressure on. Don’t think he currently has the mentality for it .
You must be very quick at typing so 🤓 “Grown up and behave yourself”? Jog on.
I’m a speedster. Maybe he will win another one anyways , he’s another few yrs in him yet.
But there’s no pathway for most people to that. Anyone can take up golf, and if they’re good enough, can play at the very top level against the best. In boxing, if you’re a different weight class, etc., you can’t compete against these people. Add to that there were less than 1,500 professional female boxers globally (as of 2018) and it’s a very small pool at the top level (not to disparage her achievements…you can only beat what’s in front of you).
Doesn’t offend me in the slightest, there’s just no way KT is Irelands greatest ever sportsperson.
Just watched the final round highlights from yesterday. Even Rory was a little shy but none of the rest if them looked like they wanted or were capable of winning it. I don't think Cam Young will ever win, he's blown so many chances.
An lads, you're not seriously comparing Rory to Katie Taylor! What's the participation level of women's boxing versus men's golf? They're different stratospheres.
There is a pathway for most people to play golf, anyone can play it?
Not a single post on this thread during the tournament about the actual Golf and it has gone into meltdown since...
Good start to the year for Rory with a 2nd and a win but still plenty of room for improvement especially on the Sunday's. He has had 1 outstanding round each week which propelled him into contention on both occasions.
