Been to Knocklyn a numer of times. It never felt pretentious. I said that you saying its full of people that can't afford their notions makes no sense when that couple did pay for the house and upgrades. Whatever invisible notions they had were paid for.

Idk about that. We heat the house (140sqm) for 600-700 a year.
And then its about comfort. People wouldnt think twice of spending 20k on a high milege second hand car.
You could tell when they showed the external shot of the front of the house at the end. You coud see the white sections jutted out futher than the neighbouring houses. Looks like they dry-lined part of the interior too.

We were heating with gas for €600 before price went up , so it’s about €1500 a year at the moment
we’ve a similar house to them built in 84.
Ours was about 300 before inflation.

From what I could make out, the external,insulated the top story - it stood proud of the downstairs one which had brick detailing on the front. Prob drylined on the interior downstairs fron wall.
Depending on calculations some recommended to pump cavity when externally insulating to eliminate thermal looping issues.

No it was our choice. Didn't make sense to keep it. We got a nice electric fire display in instead of it.
If that’s the case and the external insulation on the first floor stops at ground floor ceiling level it won’t be much better than what it was like before. They’ll be back living with the sister!
Not cheap I would imagine but any polished stone/quartz wouldn't be as a rule.
Finished house was nice - wasnt mad on the kitchen, looked cheap and not great for a family IMO. At the end of it I thought they ended up with a warm comfortable house which is what they wanted. I think alot of people live in similar homes so could relate to what they were trying to achieve. I dont think they needed to engage Dermot Bannon to achieve what they done though - it was just a standard refurbishment.
The garden is what lets the house down, they cant make that bigger or better no matter what they do - literally no back garden at all for the kids to play in. I dont think they will be still living in that house in 5 years time due to the garden issue. Lets hope they have added value by the work done and make a profit when they do sell.
There would be lots of families reared in houses with gardens like that surely?
Im sure there is, but for a couple reared in the country in Sligo with loads of space that garden is very poor. Outside space is very important to most people.
I would absolutely hate a small garden space but each to their own. I love to see the kids running around playing outside.
If I were to move down the country the trade off would have to be a massive back garden.
They would for sure but in a house that cost almost €700k I'd like a bit more space.
Demolishing the shed left no place to store kids stuff and bicycles etc.
I saw no sign of access from the front to the garden either but I could have missed that.
On the whole though, a nice job and they seemed happy.
Am sure there is a green near them where the kids play. We have similar size garden, my kids are a bit older but they play out the front all the time.
