Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

Of course we expect Partridge comparisons here and on FB comments, but I'm surprised at Waterford Whispers News doing something so obvious. I'm out of the loop of their recent content, but they used to have an edge of originality to them. Literally any poster on this thread could have (and in many cases already has) come up with this joke. You expect more from professional satirists.
I can of course see the reason for the comparisons, but the fact is that almost every TV and radio presenter gets compared to the character - precisely because the character is based on how TV and radio presenters actually behave. There's loads of examples...
https://www.reddit.com/r/AlanPartridge/comments/u5x4v4/meet_pat_kenny_a_real_life_irish_alan_partridge/
Steve Coogan himself even acknowledges that he and pretty much every presenter are a little bit Partridge.
"If you had a Venn diagram, the Alan Partridge circle will overlap the Steve Coogan circle," he quipped. He also acknowledged that "every major television presenter these days" display traits of the hilarious caricature. "There’s even that website, Accidental Partridge. So loads of people are guilty of sounding like Alan Partridge. It’s a reciprocal thing; it’s symbiotic. People out there sound like Alan and Alan sounds like them."
So it's not really that there's a bit of Partridge in Presenter X, more that there's a bit of Presenter X (and Y and Z) in Partridge. That's the genius of good satire, it takes reality and reflects it in such a way that you end up seeing reality though the lens of the satire. Lazily presenting that, as WWN have done, as "original" content is really pretty poor satire. It's like being at a comedy show, hearing the comedian on stage telling a joke that makes everyone laugh, then nudging the stranger beside you and telling the same joke.
No nonsense? He'd better not open a bottle in the studio or his show would be gone. :)

Be careful jmcc! That poster (your fan) is going to re-reg again😉
Did you hear Ryan's hilarious ripper about golf?
The constant "It's about as funny as...." reminds me of this -
the wonderful L "spotify" Duffy ??? How easy.
bring back a proper disc jockey aged 60+ for that slot
Believe it or not it’s 100% more likely they are employees.
I was at the dentist's today and they had Q102 on, a guy call Andy Preston. I lay there thinking, who is Andy Preston. No doubt there's someone with their mouth open wide in London today going, who is Ryan Tubridy.
Andy Preston has had a daytime show on Dublin radio for nearly 30 years - FM104 and then Q102; and a solid pirate history before that.
It's great to see tubs bouncing back though
It really is...
Back of the net 😀
Funny, Toyman did just do a whole bit of "Who do you think YOU are?" when talking to taxi driver with a distant connection to a 17c pirate. Literally did the emphasis. It's really a showcase for how brilliant Coogan and Alan Partridge is.
I don't listen to either station, which is why I'm not familiar with Preston. I enjoyed him for the short time I was tuned in - can well believe he has solid credentials.
So, Callan gets an alleged €150k a year for 2 years vs Tubbs current deal (likely less) for how long?
Don't you think sometimes if The Toyman just handed the Renault money back and apologised to Bakhurst and accepted the 170k offer?
3hrs on air plus say 2hrs commute and 1 hour pre production for x amount (less).
VS
X amount commute time + 1-2 hours prep and 1 hour on air + done before 10am.
Callan got the handier gig no matter how you dress it up.
Will Tubridy still be at News UK in 2 years time?
JNLR + Rajar predictions for the 10-1 slot in 3-6mths?
It's not an alleged 150k
It's actually on RTÉ news today so it is 150k for a 5 hour week
Background staff paid to do the crib notes
Out bloody Rageous
New to me and not sure if it has been mentioned before, but just heard his ad for his Mail on Sunday column, wasn't sure if it was one of Callans parodies or was a genuine ad. The men truly lives in his own bubble.
Agreed its outrageous. And as for side earnings - remember he cleared that too now so add an extra 100k+ ad infinitum on top of that to what he can potentially earn as a result of the 9am show.
It became clear the prep was done by an army of producers and researchers from when Tubs first started doing that slot. There were instances where he seemed not to have pre read the content he was doing also which are stand out cringe moments.
Who is having the last laugh now though? Tubridy in Penzance or Callan in La La Land of Montrose-ia?
The researchers and the production staff are the unsung heroes of broadcasting. Take enough of them away and the shortcomings of some on-air talent become obvious. With RTE, losses in the JNLRs seem to be ignored. The UK market is far more competitive and the RAJARs will decided whether Tubridy has a future there. There might be a curiosity/novelty boost in the next RAJAR. It may not be sustained in the one after it. The only hope that Tubridy has then is that the JNLRs bail him out due to the Q102 etc syndication deal. If both the JNLRs and the RAJARs are consistently negative (at least two of each), then he's history. If News UK manages to sell its Irish stations, Tubridy might be part of the package as an Irish name.
I bet callan will get no hassle on the street
That 150K per year for Callan seems to be a bit of a well-aimed kick at Tubridy.
Bang om Jmcc! 2 books will tell. For "The Bookman" hahaha
prayers + novenas, rosaries being said for a 1 way ticket to Penzance / no trains back on Sunday or Monday!
Probably true
But immoral at €576 an hour assuming he does all 365 days, which he won't so possibly closer to €700 an hour
Basically it's a well paid job,we should try it some time...
780 per hour by my back of the envelope calculations. RTE Tallent work 40 weeks per year and have Public Holidays off.
I like Callan, but finding it very difficult to understand how RTE can pay €150k (oh the irony) for a 1hr daily slot, regardless of prep time.
If he brings in the listeners and the advertising then he's worth it. Some people listen to the presenters. When Tubridy was dumped, the audience figures for the slot increased. If they keep increasing or even remain stable, then it is a good deal for RTE.
Considering you're an avid non-listener, you've quite a bit to say when refuting other posters' negative critique of Tubs' Virgin gig.
So am I right to conclude that your incessant defence of Tubs @ Virgin radio (title of the thread) is founded on not listening? Smh
I thought for the good of the taxpayer and their commitment to tightening the RTE budget they would save €150k per year and utilise the idle "RTE PERMANENT STAFF PRESENTERS" wandering around the RTE corridors for this slot
Excellent Ford!!!
