You’ve been saying this for a while now but my experience is quite the opposite. I’ve had no problem selling watches and cars without any major discounts and neither have my mates.

Two of my mates are trying to sell their own personal cars worth €20k and cant shift them but the sub €10k stuff is still selling well. Seems like theres still plenty of money about.

I only buy a car once every 6 years or so, so I probably look like I complete mug everytime I walk into a car showrooms 😀

I don’t act like one though- that’s the difference- very happy to walk back out the door.

I used silence a few days ago when the dealer made a pathetic offer price- I think he used silence too as he didn’t say anything while I was silent- so we were both using silence on each other hoping the other would compromise 😀

Not just EVs. Any cars. Many other things as well. I've been selling stuff for many decades and it's rare you see a buyers' market like this, I only remember one from about 15 years ago. Only firesale prices are shifting things.

That's the second half of my argument. Lots of dealers have this thing about "the car stands me..." and won't budge on that, even though it simply means they have their head in the sand, they won't sell the car for what they want and they eventually have to take a hit on it. Or a fool might turn up paying close to the asking price. Plenty of fools around.

Thanks- good to know others having similar experiences - I’m ready to buy when the car and the prices is right- I’m not under pressure so happy to walk in the meantime - I don’t see the car dealers hungry enough yet for a sale - they seem to be thinking the buyers will arrive any day now and just give them what they’re asking 😀 - and don’t get me started on trade in offers for my car-if I can make a decent cash deal I’ll sell it privately myself for whatever I can get for it

I agree with this. Recently was looking and dealers were not budging (apart from a few hundred) on a 25k car. Seeing the same cars on donedeal for ages not selling. Guess it just takes ages for dealers to accept the market is dropping

You’d think so (good time for buyers) but dealers aren’t pushovers right now is my experience - in the last week made a serious offer on a secondhand EV - there was no budging the dealer on his offer price - it was literally a few hundred shaved off a car costing early 20s that was sitting on the forecourt for the last month- could they have overpaid before Christmas I wonder for some of their recent secondhand stock ?

Im keeping a daily eye on prices of a particular model now just to see where prices are going but hopefully it will be a 10% reduction over current asking prices sometime soon- I think the market needs that to kick start it as I’m seeing the same cars for sale every day so demand not meeting supply yet

Yea, if the car is NI reg and is less than 6 months old you can run the reg through a UK car HPI check and look at the Date of Registration and the V5C Issue Date. If there is a different date it was probably UK reg

Worth noting the Tesla have the same battery warranty but yet the posters still state it’s because of the shorter Tesla warranty. Although I see their posts have been edited now.

Skoda have 3 Year or 150K kms and battery warranty of 8 years or 160K kms on the Enyaq. Seems bizarre for VW EV’s to have less….

Tesla doesn't seem to have any interest in the second hand market. For that they would need a better dealer network as the current locations would not have any space for the stock to start with.

The dealer I dealt with was comparing it to an ICE - he’s only concerned with the margin on the car the day it sells, irrespective of it being EV or ICE. most cars have 3 years/160,000km broadly speaking. Obviously EVs have the longer drivetrain warranty.

the simple fact is that Tesla genuinely dont want their own cars back second hand - why should any other dealer care either?

GW himself said he got burnt but luckily had enough in them to break even. He is more cautious now buying but still very much betas any trade in price offered.

Second hand car traders got badly burnt early last year after all Teslas, all EVs really, got a shock depreciation hit when Tesla lowered the price of the Model Y again roughly at the same time when thousands of EV owners were trying to sell their EVs into the open market as they were taking delivery of their new Model Y and Tesla don't do realistic trade ins.

The traders had to either adjust the price of the cars they had for sale and take a huge loss, or sit on their stock, not being sold. Some took it on the chin like above and didn't whinge. Others seem to just have gone into panic mode. It's a good time for buyers, that's for sure 😁

It’s mad the way people focus on the 4 year, 80000 km warranty on a tesla yet VW only come with a 3 year warranty and a 90000 km limit for the third year to be active. I’d take the tesla 4 year warranty any day.

Graham Walker cars on Harold’s cross must be the single biggest seller of tesla on the used car scene at the moment. He posted last week that he was sold out. And then proceeded to buy more from sellers and they are now up for sale. He posted on the FB groups too. Vector motors also actively advertising that they are looking for teslas. Some dealers are more in Tune than others.

Heard this myself just yesterday. Have sold a car and bought another in the past week, both via dealers, and need to change a VW pcp in a few weeks, taking almost weekly calls of better and better ID4 offers (starting off last July around €58k iirc) and all I’m hearing from the trade is to do nothing except sit and wait, and that they’re not touching EVs on trade in at the moment unless it’s a firesale price.

its not that they’re bad cars either - one fella said he just has no demand for them at current prices and out of warranty, singled out Tesla with a shorter 80,000km warranty, he actually said he wouldn’t know what to do with them - which for the next while is probably fair enough. Dealers are just looking to trade vehicles in and out - they don’t necessarily want to have to care about them or ‘understand’ them.

There’s people on Facebook giving out that no garage will take their ID4 as trade in and VW offering low 20’s for 2022 cars. 6 months ago they were 40k plus cars on the second hand market so used values have near halved in some cases.
