He's a principal of the school at this point in the show.
nope, house needs to be built before 2008 and vacant for 2 years. That's it. It doesn't need to be falling down
I missed the beginning, does anyone know what the wife does for a living?
absolutely, I know. But that doesn't take from people who can go on these shows and do up their houses. Its just life. There is no way they were living with young kids in that house the way it was, that's all I was saying.
He wasn't when they were starting and that didn't add that much to his budget anyway.
Generally speaking, and not saying it is the case here there is a lot of inheritances and life assurances being passed down after the countries economic boom in the 90s/ early 00s where many people effectively got wealthy overnight when we transitioned from an economic backwater to a major success story. In a lot of instances by sheer luck on asset valuations, in other instances business opportunities and investments.
Everyone has their own journey - try not to let it get you down and avoid comparisons. Some of us have a harder route than others.
I totally agree with you. I've no issue with these houses or people with big budgets. I just think it was a bit overdramatic of you to say completely unlivable.
Just switched it on, he did well to get to principal before his first shave!
yes and she did mention at the beginning her mother (who looked really young) died during Covid, so maybe there was an inheritance. Again that's just life.
It's not a popular job as some make out.
It's not getting me down, I'm lucky enough to have bought a lovely house during the bust but I just think it's unfair when they don't explain it properly on the programme.
Should be saying if people have inheritance, what mortgage is etc, its not a very fair reflection of reality for anyone who was watching living at home with their parents, wondering how they have managed it!
Now they are getting the Vacant home grant and the Derelict home grant and the SEAI upgrade grant? For a home they were living in???
One of these shows is going to end in disaster for some poor couple. I hope it isn't this couple as they seem nice.
interesting its finally being brought up that people need to finance the works first themselves, then claim the grants afterwards, and that can be a long process. About time this was made clear.
and went too far with the teeth whitening. Hair extensions as well I think. A very irritating person.
Runs a montessori.
Vacant home grant? What am i missing. They lived in it? And then moved out?
I think it said she runs a montessori school
yes I know, I suppose (speaking for myself!) the cold would be a deal breaker! Anything else I could deal with.... not the cold. But that's just me.
I think a good spin off show would be primary school teachers showing people how to manage money. Amazed how easily they can up budgets and make it seem as if having a 600k + house is 'tight spending' presume Montessori teachers earn even less than primary.
I believe they are living in house at advised to say not so they could claim the vacent property grant as it 70k
I think the Op was joking, as in the show was filmed over such a long period he was now a Principal.
Builder agreed to cover the shortfall until the grants come through. That's one sound builder. He a brother of one of them??
One of the perks of getting onto the show I'd say, those working on it may go the extra mile for the eventual publicity when it's done.
Oh I get you - that is actually true. Full transparency as to not trigger people I guess during a housing crisis.
I'm paying €2,000 a month rent in Dublin trying to save for a deposit with no family I can live with - it is so tough! Would love to see a proper outlay of how people finance these things and the situation they came from.
One thing for sure - I wont be contracting Dermot for anything lol.
Ah christ, that's awful! Seem a lovely couple too.
Ah no. They lost the baby.
Aw no they lost the little baby
Life savings of 200k must be backed by a big financial gift from parents or selling a bit of farmland. I don't know how a primary school teacher and Montessori owner could save that much.
Love that brick
I also always wonder about all the money that is paid in compensation claims every year, most of them are on the qt.
Was mentioned above she'd lost her Mom during covid, so perhaps a sad inheritance.
Poor woman, that's a lot of loss in a short enough period of time. Especially with a miscarriage that late. Have to feel for them - nice to see them in a lovely home now though.
