Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

Gowan, you love him admit it 😀
Ahh Linkedin, the various shades of brównnosing continues (with 1 notable exception from a commenter on linked in who subsequently gets berated!).
Would The Daily Mail and Virgin Media see eye to eye?
If he wants to make a go of it in London, he'd be better off joining the Daily Mail there.
James Corden is likeable and can be funny, guests warm to him, he doesn't get phased by even the highest of celebrities and he just looks like he belongs. Not the brightest or most knowledgeable but doesn't pretend to be. The opposite to Tubridy in some ways.
Irish Daily Mail rather than the Daily Mail. Not sure that the main edition will be be carrying it. It is all part of keeping Tubridy's Irish profile current and making him more marketable to Irish broadcasters. The problem with a return to RTE is that RTE is now a slightly different RTE to the one that dumped Tubridy and lot of the previous management has been replaced.
Regards...jmcc
Sorry have to disagree. Cordon has a personality. One might not like it but he has mimicked an American chat shownhost type voice, attitude and personality to good effect. RT is not in that league in anyway shape or form. He talks way too fast for a start. He has zero ability to.moderate his flow of consciousness as we have all heard in his nervous fre days at VR. He is too parochial to ever make it in the US even on PBS. I just don't see it. The American audience requires a certain amount of familiarity even among those looking for something "quirky"
Gift grub did a great sketch of him this morning.
Irish Mail on Sunday readership is tiny.
Another climbdown. He's not really coping well since he was sacked from RTE.
I feel like I'm hallucinating reading some of this. The guy is out of his depth in the UK and being completely exposed for his lack of wit and personality. Suggesting he could be a good fit for a bigger job in the US is ludicrous in my opinion.
Virgin Radio seems to be the Alan Partridge/Rubber Chicken circuit for Tubridy. Fame has a shelf life and if someone like Tubridy is out of the Irish public eye for too long, the Irish public will forget about him. This kind of Phil Space column is necessary if he is to remain viable as a hire in the Irish market.
Despite him being on Virgin Radio, there seems to be an awful lot of work being done to promote him in Ireland. The Q102 syndication part of the deal is more understandable in that respect as it gives him an Irish audience. It is as if there is no long-term intention of him remaining on UK radio as his main value is in Irish broadcasting.
Ah would ya stop
Apart from a nationwide radio show in Britain and a national newspaper column over here? NK proving why hes worth his commission.
That and all the troops he can call into battle too eh ?
This James Corden?
Didn't Tubridy try to break into the US broadcasting market about ten years ago with his "The Irish Are Coming" book. It got him a few interviews on local and morning TV programmes but I don't think that there were any job offers. Do you think that he's going to try to break into the US market (again)?
Tubridy seems to be an RTE lifer whereas Corden seems to have a range of talents. Fast-forwarding a year, do you think that Tubridy will be back, full-time, on an Irish radio station?
He can never say he made it in London if his sojourn there mostly dependent on listeners in Ireland.
This is such a disappointing response. Anyone who tries to inject a bit of reality into the debate, to increase the standard of discourse from base-level pile-on, is deemed a shill. This is designed to silence anything that goes against the narrative. It's unhealthy, and it's wrong.
There's lots of things to criticise Tubridy about, but it's just bizarre that his obvious and objective successes keep being used.
Let's just look at the facts.
In July last year, Tubridy and Kelly were up in front of an Oireachtas hearing, being rightly grilled in front of the Committee and the nation about the payment scandal that was had rocked the country. In August last year, RTE announced that Tubridy's contract would not be renewed. Everyone thought; that's it, the end. Both he and Kelly would fade into obscurity. Kelly was dismissed as a jumped-up chocolate salesman who had got lucky with fooling an inept quango into hiring an incompetent nepobaby for obscene money in a job he was unqualified for.
Then, less than 6 months later, Kelly has secured for his client:
Remember, these are all private, for profit, companies we're talking about. Operating in a cut-throat environment where every cent, every second, every drop of ink, every pixel counts and has to be accounted for by and to the major players of the media industry. It's not RTE, it's the real world. There's no reason for ANY of them to engage with Tubridy at all, other than the pursuit of success and cold, hard profit.
Is this the work of an out-of-his-league chocolate salesman? Is this the work for an inept "Alan Partridge" type broadcasting buffoon?
Be honest, if not here on Boards, at least in your heart.
Like him or loath him - and there is much to loath - Kelly has delivered for his client. 100%
And there's so, so many things to criticise Tubridy for, but his objective success to date at bouncing back from certain ruin is not one of them.
And no, I'm not a shill for Kelly or for Tubridy. Not a fan, not on his side.
I'm just pointing out objective facts. And if you're going to condemn me for that, its says an awful not more about you than it does about me.
Was that poster not suggesting 'the troops' are the other clients of NK, chiming in to wish Tubridy well, as part of the NK service?
See where you're coming from regarding Mr Kelly.
Or you could also say that his client, who used to be on air in Ireland for a max 8hrs per week for €500,000, is now working in London (with the expense that incurs) for reportedly a fifth of that amount for twice the amount of hours.
To say he's done well for his client is perhaps looking on the bright side a little?
Oh sweet divine mother of mercy he's on the
cover
Anyone know where yesterday's gift grub can be heard?
edit: found it;
Wow: They nailed it.
There was a poster earlier suggesting that perhaps Tubs (not unlike the fire and brimstone preachers on Mexican AM border blasters in the 1930s) was in fact buying the airtime on Virgin Radio to stay in the limelight. How bizarre how bizarre
No. I meant the people that are being paid to post positive BS about Tubridy.
Heard him advertising his new column on RTE radio this morning.. 😁
Your list of those five achievements is quiet impressive until one starts to think only ‘a little bit’ about them.
Everyone thought; that's it, the end.
No one did. The end in RTE maybe.
I agree that Tubridy is an investment for Kelly. And Kelly's 'skill' is in his relationship with Dee Forbes, who has not appeared before any committee, and has been pointed at by several RTE senior managers as the person responsible for Ryan's set up in RTE. Who knows what Dee Forbes was getting from this relationship?
So, yes, the worse Tubridy is, the better Noel Kelly is in securing employment, just as when he was able to take advantage of a very generous RTE approach. The relationship between NK clientele and Late Late Show probably could be looked into as it would seem to raise the profile of multiple NK clients.
I accept that NK is doing his job for Tubridy. However, this thread was about Tubridy's skills as a broadcaster. That posters contributing to these threads, hoping to close them down even, are not Tubridy Fans per se, but doing so at the behest of those seeking to protect their investment in Tubridy is well established by now.
So you can understand how outlining NKs brilliance, while giving 'balanced Tubridy reviews' against others who pile on would raise red flags. It may be that you aren't a shill, but others have been and spoil the environment for the genuine hard core Noel Kelly fanboys on the internet.
On Newstalk too.
Oh FFS, is there no end to Ryan Tubridy??
I was so sick of listening to the whole debacle for most of last Summer and what I would see as huge arrogance on the part of Tubridy in not giving back the 150K and persistently saying he knew nothing, it was his auditors............so I was just thrilled when he went to the UK. I was hoping it was the back of him and we could move on. (he has proven himself to be a one trick pony with very few strings to his bow apart from "books")
Yet he pops up on everything ......on Facebook, my news feed on Google , newspapers........and now he's back on Newstalk this morning on every ad break promoting HIMSELF in the Daily Mail!
I can't even listen to his voice anymore. There is no remorse, no less arrogance, he seems to completely believe in his own hype, that everyone loves him (AKA the middle aged women of Ireland), God it makes me sick. I can deal with him being in the UK but if we are getting daily shots of Ryan Tubridy on our own stations here in Ireland in the form of self promotion I'll just have to listen to podcasts. I find him insufferable, he seems to think he is the High King of Ireland and we are all lost without him.
I would agree that NK has done a great job for his clients, the problem is that for the most part it has been at the expense of license fee payers. Hopefully that has changed now. I don't think RT has a lot of fans personally, I have not met anyone who is a fan (obviously haven't asked everyone I met!) which given he was supposedly the best broadcaster in Ireland, seems a bit weird. I think he has been promoted by his agent well beyond his abilities. NK keeps him in the news with the help of a compliant media, where RT "reveals" he is going for a walk in Connemara or some other rubbish. I think we are all being gaslit. I am paying the license fee now, if he comes back to RTE I will stop.
For RTE to move on, I would like to see them trim down significantly. Most people consume media through streaming services now. I don't even have access to RTE other than the player (less said the better). They are still working with a 20th century model, the world has moved on. We need some public service broadcasting, but it doesn't need to be as big/expensive as RTE currently is. Get rid of things like 2FM and soaps like Fair City, they aren't public services. I know a lot of people will disagree, mainly those who work in the so called "creative" sector which exists in the same habitat as RTE. If RTE is trimmed down, the license fee could be reduced. I don't think it should be centrally funded as they would have their entire families working there.
To draw a line under the whole fiasco, get rid of Fair City. There could be a plot with a serial killer on the loose, killing all the fair city lifers one by one. It would be an exciting end to a rubbish soap. In the final episode the identity of the serial killer would be revealed to be... Ryan Forbes!
if we are getting daily shots of Ryan Tubridy on our own stations here in Ireland in the form of self promotion I'll just have to listen to podcasts.
I don't think he'll be popping up in Newstalk ad breaks for the rest of his life...
