Ifarm we farm had them and took them out. Amongst other problems, they held dirty water in the pockets and began to smell
herd of cows sold in carnaross today. 600-1200€ looking on LSL. Only thing is the guy that’s messing the farm they came from got the pick of them first
Was that G.E cows?
Yeah. Saw the ad for the farm a few months back. Very Fine place
thanks for that I sopose to wash the scutter out could be tuff
Gortalea tonight Fr Maiden Heifers EBI 190-250 euro, 235 to 250kgs 420 to 440 euro. All declared correct and right for breeding. @Siamsa Sessions I was thinking of you watching it. no video's up but details up on catalogue lots 1001-1003
Did you see the quality or lack of!!!
Well lads one day to go
Discussed with a fella who m8lked around last year and came to the conclusion that it was like any indoor milking system massively dependant on milk price.he said some of his carry overs milked more than some that calved but more didn't and were almost dry by june
2 council cars arrived in a neighbours yard yesterday- someone must have reported him
Have heard of a few visits in meath recently. Only getting what we've had for years here. Every county should be treated the same. What some lads around the country are getting away with is crazy.
A lad that used post on here from wicklow, finshed milking at Christmas, cows gone. He had been planning on getting out for a while. Best of luck to him
One big advantage since the abolition of quotas.you can give up milking and if your or family circumstances change milking your can start again.with quotas it was very difficult to get going again
No need to be running down someone else’s stock
I wasn’t - lads talking down prices of cows but the prices paid were a true reflection of the quality of stock that was offered for sale
if these are the type of animals that the Irish ebi bulls are leaving behind them are we as dairy farmers in big trouble?
the question has to be asked
also are these lads now getting out because these cows are now proven to be unprofitable
Was full sure this is what you meant byb2 days to go.
How long did it take you to come to that conclusion, you attacked us on here multiple times a good few years ago, when you where all in on high ebi irish genetics and ran down using international holstein genetics, looking at the sale yesterday, they're probably a good barometer of the average Irish dairy herd, a decade plus of having no regard for breeding for type and chasing smaller cows scoring plus 15 for mainataince on ebi is really starting to show, the more milkier type holsteins at the sale 600kgs plus all made a thousand plus and had plenty of customers
At least I can admit that I have made huge mistakes
I was also clever enough to swallow my pride and change my breeding so it would be more profitable
Got a brainwave here to buy a very expensive imported Austrian fleck bull, 6 years ago, the 1st crop of his heifers where that bad, I sold the next batch in the mart, the following spring I'd of got out of cows rather than breed them....
The funny thing is, if a bull like renegade was used on your typical herd the resulting heifers would be ideal stock, the milk/type would be in them and your solids maintained, its not a unrecoverable situation
Snapshot from journal of recent herd clearance sale ……quality well bred stock with records and Ai bred are still making decent money
made few errors here re breeding as well ….ebi worked v well for me for years but due to the messing and chopping /changing of sub indexes I gave about 2 years too long pucking bulls based on it ….ended up with sub standard small poor confirmation heifers and took too much milk from them ….comming right again now thankfully
What are the parameters you use now to pick bulls Mahoney? Have you enough choice from oroven bulls or do you still have to take some risk?
Health score only real one I use from ebi ….international bulls based on own country figures ….decent milk …good % ….dpr positive …medium stature …good strength …wide deep rump Interestingly bulls I have been using score v well on health for ebi ….Altalawson ,Lawson Larry ,Conway episode ,b52 ..r2d2 Perseus ,wikitionary bulls of choice atm
I’m happy enough with where we’ve gone in the last 5 years
here are a few decent heifers calving from last years group
all classified vg
didn’t have those yields in a long time for heifers oh and they got the same levels of feeding as 6-7000 litre heifers
How much nuts would they be getting 1.5? Would the goal be to bred a herd of cows like the above going 750-800 kgs as a herd average
Probably getting 1.7 ton
yeah goal is 750-800
its amazing what one bull can do- this heifer calved again this morning- she’s by praser- gp82 as a heifer- her mother scored f69
Where are you buying your feed?
Macauleys
I only ever use the high maize nut
Ok
Just because the high ebi animsl doesn’t suit your doesn’t mean it doesn’t suit others. Im
more than happy with how our herd here is progressing and it’s all Irish bulls used
The justice?
