Seems to be a media thing. I don't know anyone that has any issue with the FA Cup.
The Guardian Football Weekly coverage of the FA Cup weekend was much more enjoyable I found.
If they were going to take the piss then they should have brought back Kens goooooaaaallllllsssss too!
This is the thing, I don't know of anyone who says I'm not watching that it's only the fa cup. Yet the media constantly look down their nose at it. Wembley will have 80 odd thousand for both semis and the final and there will be millions all over the planet will watch the final.
Which outstanding Carberry performances for Ireland and Munster was Gerry Thornley referring to exactly?
Gerry rolling out a few of the greatest hits during his appearance - "x-factor", "bulk suppliers" and even in retirement numerous awestruck references to Johnny Sexton
More and More top teams don't play their top players in the FA cup, especially the 3rd round so its not surprising that fans are less interested in it.
The overuse of superlatives leaves you with nowhere to go
Add me to the list of people who can't even watch the highlights programme for the FA Cup round anymore.
Will the form team of the 2nd Division beat the bench players of the middling Premier League club? Suddenly there are 5 more sports that are more interesting to watch.
I've no interest at all in the FA Cup. Probably wouldn't even watch the final unless there was some kind of novel pairing.
I have to say, I tune out whenever he's on.
The only thing missing from the Gerry Thornley Bingo card was the liberal use of 'ballast'...
His most common saying on the bingo card is "ooommmmm". He says it constantly and it really grinds my gears.
I don't mind Gerry although he's tends to put a very positive spin on everything Ireland related.
Yeah for what it's worth I don't mind Gerry either....the relentless positivity can wear thin though.
That and blaming every defeat for an Irish team on refereeing decisions
I also get the impression that he would love to be a member of the team. The way he talks about the players, calls them by their nicknames, etc.
I dont mind him either. He’s been doing the rugby gig for donkey’s years now so has a huge knowledge of the Irish game.
Ruaidhri O’Connor from the Indo has been a fine addition to the podcast’s roster. Haven’t heard from Andrew Trimble in a long time.
Yeah, back when I started watching football in the 90s the 3rd round in January and the final were 2 of the best days in the football calendar.
To be honest, I think it's part of getting older and more cynical about football. At least for me.
Ruaidhri O'Connor is dreadful, getting by on inside scoops rather than any actual insight on the games.
BCM
Biggest chances missed?
Well the third round is Thursday to Monday now rather than all matches starting at three on a Saturday.
Also zero chances of lower league teams beating premier league reserve sides too.
I completely agree with Ken's take on football over Christmas too. Sometimes a little bit of occasional rarity is better for a product than an over supply.
Didn't listen to today's pod yet but seen Nunez in the title. What the hell is it with this Nunez obsession. I don't know of any fans or media people that obsess over him as much as the lads.
Boro have knocked out united, wolves knocked out Liverpool and forest knocked out arsenal in the last few years off the top of my head whilst all being lower division.
Hardly minnows like.
I think it’s more Ken that is obsessed with him
Ken always has an obsession on the go, was Lampard when he was Chelsea manager.
Really good interview with Ronan Finn.
I mean he is a quasi-comic figure gurning more than even his coach does. Perfect fodder.
It's his use of The Highveld when he's talking about teams going to play in South Africa that really marks Gerry out as an elite level rugby journalist 😀
When they were talking the other day about German players who were rubbish in the Premier League they never mentioned Schweinsteiger who was probably the biggest disappointment of them all.
