I can understand that. For me it always feels very late local radio with the kind of music and the "Can you say hello to the Murphys raving here in the car going back to Arklow"s.
Louise Cantillon's new show just started.
First link....Cash machine.
Like she had a choice?
Just going back to the comment about Ed being neutered. Lately I heard the early Manic Street Preachers song Motorcycle Emptiness. A classic if you've heard it. Anyway, there's the album version which is the guts of seven minutes long, and, I guess, the radio edit, with a couple of bits trimmed from it. Anyway, somehow a new edit has been concocted by someone, either within or without Ed's show or station. The axe is wielded a bit more liberally, and the whole last verse of the song is annihilated, and as well the closing guitar solo is suddenly terminated just as surely as you might cut a man's legs off below the knee with a sword. I dunno whose idea that was but it has "corporate decision" stamped all over it. Does Ed have any say in it? A real shame.
Ya, it's strange I had assumed she'd start her new show by saying the Cash Machine is just a pile of sh1te.
They need to keep all songs around the same time as that New Radicals track. Or Jimmy Eat World.
Where Kirsty McColl sings "Your cheap and you're haggard"? Where has that version come from?
Passionate about copying others ideas maybe....as another poster pointed out, local radio have been doing it for years. Jenny Green started out on Saturdays on 2FM doing just this.
Kinda exactly this, plus nostalgia. Dance music then could be a bit too much back then, but also there was some damn good stuff. Nice to hear some stuff on it too I haven't heard in ages.
It's an alternate take iirc. It was even changed for ToTP at the time. People seem to get far more worked up about it than Shane ever did - he seemed to have more issue with people using the censorship for their own ends than the censorship itself.
Was listening to Foley just there as he was talking about Enrique Iglesias and playing bits of other hits of his. I like his irreverence and the fact that you just don't know what you're going to get with him. Plus him and JP bounce off each other well à la Dermot and Dave. And maybe the playlist isn't the same old same old Today FM borefest? I'm open to correction. But the wife hates him, and I completely understand that too. I remember him overcooking some "World of Wonder" thing (he even mispronounced it as "world of wander" a lot), and I can imagine a lot of people just switching off from him never to return.
no, it wasn't changed for top of the pops in 1987. Proper version featured here:
Fairytale of New York (feat. Kirsty MacColl) [Top of The Pops Dec 1987] (youtube.com)
I first heard the censored version around 3 years ago when some DJ on BBC Radio 1 made a fuss. I never knew alternative lines were even recorded by kirsty - it would not have been seen as a problem in 1987, or even up to her death in 2000.
I'd forgotten how accomplished Shane was at miming and playing pretend piano.....😁
Turns out it was 1992 ToTP that that lyric was changed - 1987 was Arse to Ass... I still go with The Pogues/ Shane have/ had more issue with people using the censorship than the censorship itself. And that's good enough for me tbh.
FFS I know she didn't have a choice. I'm talking about Today FM, not her.
another weekend change:
Today FM adds two new familiar faces to its weekend line-up - Irish Mirror Online
I can't keep up with the schedule
Thank you for your post letting us know that Today FM make all of their presenters advertise the Cash Machine at the top of the hour. We weren't aware of that before.
Inspired by this post, I took a trip back through the internet archives...the weekday schedules from April 2001, November 2005 and December 2008.
The blast with Ray Foley at 22:00 - 00:00 was great I thought!
I'm not the biggest fan of Ray Foley, but I used to enjoy listening to The Blast, and "Shite Night" during his Spin days.
Great to hear KC is back on Today FM
Huh? What have they got to do with each other?
So KC doing 6 days a week is he going to be doing the today FM show from cork.
Nearly spat my tea out when I heard Kneecap earlier. Who hacked the Bauer mainframe to get them on the playlist?
It's dance music for people who haven't a clue about dance music. Reliving the chart hits more than any really underground dance music. Not for me at all, don't get it.
You’re not the target audience, they make it quite clear they play dance hits, not underground dance.
so it’s dance music for people who love the hits.
the same way Ed smith now plays the hits, something I’m not bothered with but would have listened when he played more alternative music.
They played a bit of their collab with Grian Chatten on the Last Word music slot I think before Christmas but never heard them on Today FM before. Who played it - and when will they be fired?
Nonsense. Love dance music and love BRB. Some awful tunes, but a lot of absolute crackers. Where else would you hear The Visions of Shiva on Irish radio these days.
I heard it on Saturday afternoon. They're very popular already with the young folk.
