Smyths has been there since the 80s. Huge shop though. Anyone know what was there before Smyths?
Not sure if the part of that street is correct, but I do remember a cafe and collection depot connected to Roche's Stores back in the early 80s or even late 70s...
Are you doing some type of local history project OP?
Was it Day's as in Robert Day, had a fishing tackle shop there in the 70's?
I think it may have been a Quinnsworth.
Dunnes were there just before Smyth's but not sure who was there before them.
I think you are right - now that you mention it, I remember a Quinnsworth down there
Quinnsworth was on Oliver Olunkett St where Guineys is now.
Days fishing tackle were in Bowling green street. I think the buildings on Maylor street were used by Roches stores. I remember people referring to Southern Fruit when I had a summer job there in the early 80's.
Bowling green street.
Hickeys drive thru occupied where Smyths is now. They were like Brooks or International trading. They had stores down towards the office supplies place across from the bus office.
Where the multistorey car park is was a flat surfaced carpark for Roches Stores. That backed out towards Merchants quay where the coffee shop was.
Hickeys still own a smaller shop on that street, but not the same type of stock as years ago. They owned much of Maylor street.
Do Hickeys still own it? I was under the impression that it had been sold and just the new owner kept the name.
The small Hickeys? I'd say it's only the name.
No Hickeys as in the family were long gone, there was a management buy out in the late 80's.
That batch of managers were all approaching retirement age when they sold the business just before the boom crashed.
It is only the business name and premises that is the same, everything else is long gone.
