They can be removed from office for not performing their duties
This one is news to me, what's the process to remove a mayor not carrying out duties? And who determines what those duties are?
I haven't seen any indication yet of who might be running for mayor but I suspect it won't be any of our councillors as it's the same day as the local elections and a council seat is likely much easier to win.
Elections are due the 7th June 2024. Sitting Limerick Green Party TD Brian Leddin has thrown his hat into the ring as of a few days ago
Anyone know what voting system will be used ?
He probably knows the writing is on the wall for the Green Party at the next election so looking elsewhere.
I think he'll be too city focused as the Mayor of Limerick, but, you could lay that claim at others too once we know who throws their hat in the ring.
I assume PR with first past the post getting the nod
it smells of covering all angles anyway , while I think some of his "idea's" are ok at times , I really think he is too constrained on his thinking of growing limerick in general .
I really do think the LNDR is a major sticking point and saw the during the week the TUS president mention so as well pointing out that roads are not just about moving people and that the north side is very underdeveloped or something along those lines.
Limerick is underdeveloped in a lot of areas and I don't see GP or leddin helping resolve this. I also fear that the wrong "popular" candidate gets in as well.
Ah god I forgot it's not just mayor of the city.
We're gonna end up with one of those NIMBY bogger prcks who is obsessed with blocking city developments aren't we.
It hasn't officially been announced that I can tell but it will most likely be instant-runoff where a 50%+1 is needed to win, similar to what we have for the presidential and by-elections
If "one of those NIMBY bogger prcks" wins then it would suggest a majority of voters agree with their plans
Fairly ignorant comment in fairness.
Couldn't care less.
The whole system of using ancient council boundaries is fuked which leads to some dope councillor from Askeaton or somewhere virtue signalling to his NIMBY voters about developments in the city.
Most likely what we are about to get is a city born mayor who equally has no business being mayor of Oola or Pallasgreen.
And that’s why they should never have merged the county and the city. They’rw two very different entities and they shouldn’t be run as one.
NIMBY voters in Askeaton caring about developments in the city? I think you're getting confused with what "NIMBY" actually stands for
Not sure I agree with this, generally speaking the county and city dwellers all want the same things. Adare bypass, motorway to Cork, Liam McCarthy, a working Hospital etc etc
Councils don't have any say in hospitals. TDs do and funny enough they are split between city and county.
Could be wrong but the motorway and Adare bypass would be national infrastructure too and not councils.
Totally correct there Breezy. While the local councils Road Development Office takes the lead in planning it's TII (and the government) who decide what projects go to planning, and what funding each project gets. (Cork RDO have the lead on the Cork to Limerick road).
The councils have no say over when these roads get built. And a DEM won't either.
I think you're missing the point, councils, as well as our national Parliament, are controlled by the same political parties.
The DEM is due to have very strong powers so might have a say in a lot of these projects similar to a TD
There’s a big danger this job could be another over paid public sector job with a Yes person waffler type getting it .
What Limerick needs is a Michael O Leary no nonsense type who has a handle on the city and county’s problems and is prepared to work to better things rather than just drawing a big wage .
There is also a danger that someone earning 160k will have much in common with the vast majority of the people of Limerick.
People are overestimating the powers the the DEM will have. We're basically electing a person to take on the powers of the current Chief Executive.
They won't have any say on national matters such as national roads and hospitals.
And non cabinet TDs have very little say in government policy. They're mainly there to follow the party whip during votes.
What will a "Michael O'Leary type" do ?
The man is good at running a business which is the exact opposite of a public service. We have heard all this "run the government/HSE/council like a business" stuff before but it doesn't hold up.
What exactly do you believe a business man can do in the role of mayor that will be so successful ?
no accountability in the public service leads to laziness and nobody really caring , everybody gets paid anyways type mentality .
Limerick regional Hospital been a good example , if a Michael o Leary type ran that hospital there wouldn’t be queues out the door and people dying on trolleys !
If a "Micheal O'Leary type" ran that hospital people would be dying at home because O'Leary or another business man would only make it efficient for those willing to pay a premium. We would become the USA with all it's massive healthcare problems.
But that's off topic because the mayor won't run the hospitals or the public service so what will the O'Leary type do as mayor ?
There will be plenty of accountability for the DEM. It's called the ballot box.
My understanding back in 2019 was that a directly elected mayor would have much more responsibility than the current mayor and would effectively have powers similar to a junior minister
In any case my point is that county and city dwellers generally want the same things from their elected representatives, other than a few extreme situations of course
I see the DEM as a minster for the MidWest
If Brian Leddin gets in there will be cycle lanes everywhere. I see his candidacy as being a vote on how happy you are (or not) with these plans
Maybe people are are sick of drivers parkingng on Footpaths, pedestrianised streets and disabled spaces! Maybe we can hold people accountable for breaking the law!
The only way we get that is through proper enforcement of the laws, not sure really what political party you could vote for to achieve that
Looks like John Moran is adding his name to the list

I would be very suprised if you do not see a black and white member if the ursidae family running. Some people have been saying that is the reason for the reconcilliation with Social Democrats.
Ursidae?
