Not a good look. I wonder did he go because this was going to come to light?

Isn't she, in the words of Hyacinth Bucket, "well-connected?" I think I've heard that she is Ian Dempsey's niece or goddaughter or something like that?
Her Godfather, or close friends of his still in RTE
Tune in first day and never listen again would show nobody wants to listen to him
'They' don't know you are listening to it. You won't be counted as a listener.
That's now how they generate listenership figures.
Surely he'll be going into it with the midset that he's broadcasting to a UK audience and will be careful to explain any even vaguely obscure Irish references. I mean that's the main gig isn't it? Even if Q102 dropped him after 6 months that wouldn't matter much to him would it?
Sure not from DAB, but they will know from all the other ways to listen
I imagine his ego would be quite damaged by being dropped in Dublin.
Sure but in terms of salary, career path etc. I'm assuming it's a minor sideline...
Normally the radio station programming director would be tasked with that kind of responsibility, but with 2FM???
So Tubridy is now saying the RTE scandal was the best thing to happen to him? Tell that to the 400 staff about to be laid off. Not an ounce of remorse from him, poor me, everyone else's fault, etc etc.
Also saying he always wanted to try radio in the UK, after previously saying he never wanted to leave Ireland again, UK radio was a tough gig and so on.
He's only over there because he was ran out of RTE.
He did seem to be desperate to get back in to RTE but I'd say he's genuinely glad now at how things have worked out, even if he's on a fraction of the salary. It just seems like the right move for him on every level.
I don't know about on "every level".
He's said many times he's a home bird.
He has 3 children, admittedly grown up, but he's not at the end of the road from them any more.
He's 50 and moving to London. A young man's city. Especially socially.
It's an expensive city.
He'd have found it hard to get an outright gig on Irish radio with comparable salary so professionally London is an OK move: it's a job. But personally and socially it's hardly The Dream move.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out for him. He tried it before and it didn't really work out. I can't see his "shtick" transferring over there, ie Irish-America, JFK, Democratic politics, reading from the paper, Toyshow, and a fair dollap of Paddy Whackery. He really will have to reinvent himself.
Agreed.
If he wanted or had any real ambition (at all) to spread his wings, he would have done it before this. If I remember correctly, he wasn't much of a hit when he stood in briefly for Graham Norton on radio. He is lucky to get this job, imo. Whether he realises that or not.
I like Q102, it's easy background listening when I am at home. But I didn't listen to Tubridy when he was on RTE so I won't be listening to him on there either.
And at the end of the day, if he and his agent weren't so goddam greedy, he would still be waffling away on RTE, and pocketing a humongous salary. No move to London required. 🤷♀️
He's 50 and moving to London.
Isn't this what so many middle-aged men long for though, throw everything up and start again? But they have so many obligations they can't bring themselves to take the plunge. And Tubridy surely wouldn't either if his hand hadn't been forced.
And given Chris Evans seems to have his back in a big way it's probably not such a big gamble. Worst case scenario if he doesn't work out in the mid-morning slot he'll find himself
"He always wanted to try radio in the UK" But he already has? He stood in for Graham Norton on Radio 2 a few summers ago, and it didn't work out.
He wasn't auditioing for a full-time gig though he was keeping the seat warm during the summer. And he was asked back a few times to fill in for Terry Wogan & Chris Evans so it's unlikely he was a disaster. Or that he will be in the Virgin gig either.
It was a disaster, he was told off
I love how Tubs and his supporters are spinning this as a positive.
It's anything but.
He'll not last at it, wait and see.
Yeh that's puzzling. He tried it. There were also stories for years that he was wanted as the next big thing in the UK, likely used as a bargaining chip in salary negotiations.
Its odd how he just glossed over the fact he already tried radio in the UK and also was adamant it wasn't for him and he wanted to remain in Ireland.
And then he changes his tune on a six pence. Partridge-esque desperation at this stage.
Forgotten his "The Irish Are Coming" book? It appeared around the same time (roughly) as his cover gigs on UK radio. (It had Tubridy on the cover with famous Irish people.)

How many times was he asked back and were these for non-holiday cover?

Anyone know what his Virgin/Q012 show's format will be yet? Will there be live callers?
Hard to say at this point. Currently that slot on Virgin Radio presented by Eddy Temple-Morris appears to be music driven. As far as I can see Virgin have nothing on their website promoting Tubridy's show in advance and radio stations would normally hype up a change in direction even if it were for just 3 hours. I don't think it's going to be a Gerry Ryan-esque type format tbh but it's looking that we won't know for sure until the 2nd of January.
Heard him being interviewed one morning on Q102 about it. I'm not sure if he went into specifics though. Mostly how it was going to be so wonderful and so on. Admittedly I didn't listen closely.
The current programme in that slot is music, ads and a bit of chit chat by the presenter.
Eddy Temple-Morris knows music. Tubridy doesn't. Perhaps the playlist will be set out for him with some notes. A lot of Virgin listeners may be in for a far bigger hangover than they expected on 02/01/24. :)
It will be hard for Tubridy to adapt to London. The first audience figures will make or break him.
He has 3 children
I didn’t know that!
Two, I think? Two daughters.
Two according to his Wikipedia page.
Three children. If you include Jellybeans.
