All geno typed to date here, thanks to bdgp over past number of years. What surprised me when selling culls, the genomic data for 3 of 5, sold singles, didn’t show up on the livestock live auction screen on the day.
Locking barriers came in very handy for the job, and having all the tags in numerical order before you start. There is a page with a list of tag numbers in box too so you can give a quick look at that if a tag isn't jumping out at you. I think any cows not listed as having a serve on system didn't get a tag supplied.
Never heard of it. Have you a name of the product?
Bovilis Cryptium
Same idea as other scour vaccines i.e. 2 shots and it comes through the colostrum
Any idea of cost per cow?
Is it like the other vaccines that to be fully effective calves must be on cows milk for 3+ weeks?
Tallying up what it cost to grow maize here for this year contractor/seed/sprays/plastic came to 600 euro, 235 land rental, 300 for fertiliser and lime and 150 for slurry spreading acre
1285 euro approx all in with no value put on 9k of slurry it got, not hard to figure out its a non-runner at current milk prices
Meal is becoming a non runner too..
Does the contractor fee include spreading the slurry or did you spread it yourself?
Never use it here , just wheat whole crop. You cut it earlier, buffer feed earlier if you want plus if you under sow it like I do you get multiple paddocks back into the system for back end of year and extend your rotation.
Spread the slurry myself, put in a 150 euro charge for that diseal/wages/tracotor etc, contractor was circa 80 euro a acre dearer than 2022 between all the jobs harvesting alone was increased 40 euro a acre from 2022
Actually doing the above next year have 2 fields that need reseeding, and going to give it a try
How much is it dm per kilo compared to beet and meal?
Can you sow it on high ground and Bale? We used to do it donkeys years ago with wheat and peas, worked well
I just pit it and if I run out of space I put it ontop of the first cut pit and buffer that first. It will grow where wheat can grow. Also of your growing it on good land might be an idea to use straw shortener on it as in a good year the wheat can get so strong it kills the undersown grass.
You'll have to use more starch based feed to bring it up to maize levels in a tmr but way less protein as the wheat and new grass mixed together are very high in pr. I only feed 4kg of high pr nut in parlour and no soya in tmr. I still say your probably better feeding maize ad lib no tmr on grass and whole crop when they are in full time on tmr. Also straw is already in the diet with whole crop so cuts down work.
Hitting nearly 30 c/kg dm, its hard to gauge till you actually have it all feed out and can work out your actual tonnage for the year
I don’t know anything about the Crypto one but i thought with Rotavec Corona the calf needed to suck within an hour or so for the vaccine to give protection and it isn’t much help after that.
We are feeding whole crop wheat in one yard and maize in the other. The cows on the wheat have much drier dung and seem more satisfied but the cows on the maize are milking better.
Your doing v well @600 for seed spray plastic ploughing power harrowing and harvesting ……
Was the old type plastic, you could add on another 100 plus if comparing to the new plastic, tillage farmer I’ve the ground off is very reasonable with us he does all the groundwork/sprays of ground etc, contractor just sows and harvests……
No need the mothers milk for 10 days
I must be missing something because I reckoned ours cost about 21c/kg DM
ours cost 1000€/ac for seed, fert , plastic, ploughing, tilling, sowing, harvest, dung spreading and slurry spreading. Add on land cost on top
What tons per acre harvested are you working off?
25T
the 3 trailers were weighed once each and they averaged just over 15t loads
470 /acre seed spray and new plastic
110 /acre plough and power harrow
70 /acre to contractor for slurry m
12 /acre to contractor for fertiliser
170/acre to harvest
830 odd/acre for contractor cost and seed /spray/plastic
280/acre for 0 7 30 plus urea
7 k gallons slurry??
had a savage crop tho with good cobs ….will feed well next spring/summer
Any idea on costs?
We didn’t go with chemical p and k on ours just urea. Got lots of slurry and dung
seed, plastic and spray was 400€ an acre here. Thats how ours was down at 1000€
Lads are overdoing the nitrogen on maize. A spray with humates and seaweed or trace elements at about knee high is far more important. Really drives it on.
Bought maize is 70-75€/t @30% dm it’s costing 25c/kg dm
Was told last week I signed up too late. I signed up in October I think. Said it was too late to be doing it via the tags and they'd send out hair samples but they needed them back by the 4th of December. Nothing arrived.
