Additional needs payment to furnish new home

Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone has applied for the additional needs payment to furnish a new home recently? And if so how long did the process take once you were advised it was going to an officer for a decision did you hear back?

to cut a long story short I am after receiving keys to a cluid property a week ago. I was told back in February that I was getting the property however there was an enforcement notice on the site. At the time they told us properties would be ready end of March, start of April so naturally I gave my notice to my landlord now my landlords expecting keys back before Xmas which is fair enough since Ive been allowed to stay here for 9 months after giving my notice. I’m stressing I won’t be able to get my white goods etc I also work part time and have a son Thanks in advance for any advice

It would be impossible to give an estimate as it really depends on how busy your local CWO is!

I also understand that Community Welfare services are now dealt with in Dublin as opposed to local offices. This may only be the case for processing applications though.

In any case you can contact the Dublin office on 0818 60 70 80 you can arrange an appointment with your local CWO I believe that way but I don’t think you can phone them anymore as I say the calls are handled in Dublin now.

If you can arrange a meeting you can explain your situation and they will do what they can in regards expediting the application but they may not be able to.

Aside from that in the interim is it possible to borrow some money from family, friends or your boss? Even if just enough for bare essentials to keep you going short term. If there’s any charity shops local to you they might be able to help find some appliances for cheap as well!

If all else fails it might be worth seeing if your landlords willing to at least let you stay until after New Years or with family or friends. I am afraid with Christmas coming in a few weeks that will also delay processing your application so I’d see about an appointment asap.

Thank you so much for all of your advice I probably should have mentioned there was members of Cluid and Kildare coco on to the CWO for my area and they requested for any tenant given these specific properties be processed as a matter of urgency but I’ve never been through this process before I’m also aware not to borrow as they will consider your needs already met and close the claim so between a rock and hard place thank you for your comment again :)

Ah no they will still pay you an award if you’re due one if you’ve had to borrow money!

You can clarify that with them but fortunately you have backing from local council and Cluid! I’d just make sure the CWO is aware you have to leave your current property if they are not already!

I you look on adverts.ie you will find loads of free stuff that could keep you going while you save up for new stuff.

OK, I was awarded this early in the year. Applications are being dealt with by a central Office in Kildare. Intero centres have a self addressed envelope & form. I used these when applying, I'm not sure if you can apply online.

Mine was processed within a week. That might have changed based on demand. I'd imagine at this time of year, longer.

A few pointers.

You'll need recent Bank Statements as its means tested.

They'll only assist if it's an emergency requirement.

They will Not assist if a person has already borrowed & paid for goods.

Get a written Quote for items needed, DID electrical helped me.

Just insure you've everything they've asked for as.

Wouldn’t usually need quotes for ENP when furnishing a new house especially when it’s social housing or an Approved Housing Body. They will calculate themselves an award based on your income and necessary expenditure

all you get are walls and fixtures (sockets etc) so you’d be up against it trying to get quotes for everything from flooring to a microwave.

They actually encourage then, I'm just advising it's better to have them, they ask on the application forms. I decided to get written quotes for the appliances I needed, got approved within a week, no follow up questions etc & money in my account.

Just to add I had to borrow money from family to pay security deposits on my flat and utilities. Otherwise the land landlord would have given it to someone else. I applied for additional needs payment and was waiting 6 weeks. It was refused on grounds that the deposits had been paid and they determined that therefore there was no need. Do Not borrow money to pay for items, you won’t get it back. I’m still in debt to 2 family members as a result.
