To be fair, he has brought in a voluntary cow reduction scheme
Danny would be able to spell the name of his home village at least.
I wouldnt be too sure of that them kerry boys arent too slow alot of lads down there on rock with wind turbines making serious money alot more than some dairy farmers
Involuntary surely?
Not that it matters from where he's standing - the only important part at policy level is "cow reduction".
I'd say voluntary. You can volunteer to get rid of cows or volunteer to get land, etc. He hasn't made anyone get rid :-)
"Volunteer to get land" would show your geographic distance from areas seriously affected.
Don't get ya
I think they mean it's going to be very hard to get land in àreas most affected..such as cio Kilkenny for example
Any tips for calves with a touch of rotavirus?
What age are they. Can you set up another area for new calves so they wont be meeting the virus. Are the cows vaccinated
Fluids and more fluids. Effydral tablets used to be good helped counter the acidosis of the scour I think. Milk morning and evening and 3 feeds of effydral morning midday and nighttime. Vaccinate the spring herd when time as well. Give newborns as much biestings as they well take. If there are a lot of calves sick possibly try and get a bit of help in if possible. Vet might have more ideas
Think effydral are gone now
dairygold version of making suppliers jump through hoops and justify their existence. imagine expecting people in their 60s and 70s having to complete this shat
You're right actually, got ones called Hydra F last spring seems similar. Basically sodium bicarbonate and a share of salts and lactose
We have used replenolyte for the last couple of years and find it good. In addition to giving it to calves with a stomach tube I leave a couple of litres in a bucket for them to drink. The mix rate is 50ml to a litre.
Cows were vaccinated but alot were left drink the cow. They were bottled biestings but maybe too late.
Not blessed with loads of room either. Calves are hungry, get up and go to drink. Squeeze teat a few times then give up. Calf is still hungry and will try again a couple of times then farmer and calf gives up! Starts maybe at a week old.
Had crypto a couple of years ago, but nothing this last fews seasons.
No extra help unfortunately
I'm afraid being left to drink the cow isn't a sure enough way of getting biestings in, if a calf drinks it I would give even up to 4 litres for first feed. Also for vaccine to have best effect they say its best to be on whole milk for first 2 weeks
I had a bad dose of it years ago and i blamed cows not getting enough nutrients /minerals before they calved .Like mentioned above vacinate and plenty of biestings . If your problem is current ,i would try volac asgold ,i think that what cured up the scour in mine but mind you the price of it would want to work
Hands up, eyes weren't on the ball. Have to deal with it now
Had an awful time this year myself, particularly in the spring. Lack of help and things snowballed for me. Can happen us all at some stage for various reasons.
Its hard found but if you can find help in any form be it a milking or two or even feeding stock etc it may help. Maybe someone local looking for a few hours work a week be it a young fella or neighbour or whatever. Giving a bit of consistent work even when you may not need It thru the year may help keep lads/ lassies around.
Biggest problem with colostrum is poor quality all cows here given concentrates pre calving to improve colostrum but i can c some of the guys who lie awake at night dreaming of the 500kg cow eating 500kg meal giving 500kg could never allow themselves to eve think of meal precalving electrolytes sick calves cost lots of money.
Feed microbes is the only answer. We had a bad dose or rotovirus two years ago. Added microbes to the milk replace in the automatic feeder.
Not a single sick calf last Spring. Don't vaccinate anymore. Vaccine is a waste of time unless you are feeding milk for the first 2 weeks.
What brand @ginger22 ??
We have our own, subtillis and lichenformis. We also use it in the slurry and as part of the foliar spray program. But you can get something similar from Interchem precision microbes.
Vaccine isnt a waste seen calves scouring from day 1 with no vaccine yes older calves may scour if not fed for long time but a day old calf scouring is a bad situation which must be avoided
Yogurt milk can be a good treatment / prevention for Rotavirus / Cryptosporidium.
That's interesting, as most will be back here in the spring with sick calves, wondering what kind of stuff you said you used.
For the lad a bit slow like myself, can you tell me what and how you make it.
We don't make it we buy it.
I was watching Attenborough there following a herd of caribou migrating across Alaska. 200,000 head in that herd alone. European farmers really are some joke with their enviro BS.
