I was watching the Dunphy tearing down Venables video at 1 AM Sunday morning, not sure if I had some kind of premonition or something, I remember watching it live and it was so entertaining, while I think RTE have decent coverage these days it's not compelling viewing anymore.
Eamon was like an early Skip Bayless for RTE, you wouldn't agree with him but you'd tune in to hear what mad shíte he'd come out with.
The GAA is not for profit, the money made there goes back into the community, not the hands of Eddie **** Hearne.
I think Murph's point was around the likely attendance and the time of year they're looking to have it. Aviva has more availability in the summer which is fair. I don't think it will fill Croker unless tickets are very reasonable (and nothing else major is on that weekend so there might be some accommodation available) so having it in the Aviva makes more sense in that regard. Having 40-45k in the Aviva would be better than the same number in Croke park for optics and atmosphere.
Also, there is no way the taxpayer should pay anything to help Hearn and Matchroom, they made £60M in profit last year and would have no problem paying the fees but just wants to make more money himself.
Keep telling yourself that everyone is a volunteer. You might just believe it if you say it enough.
Oh wow. You've really bought in hook, line, and sinker haven't you?
I'd say its a less gullible take than thinking the Irish Government should subsidise this fight
Haven't had a chance to listen to yesterday's pods yet but I was driving to work this morning and Pat Kenny was on in the background, and he kept saying "Yobs" and it just, well it just made my morning is all I have to say.
Are the two things mutually exclusive? I never said the government should fund it.
they arent going to get 40-45k for it anywhere to be fair, wishful thinking.
I can see them getting 40k.
I cannot see them getting the 80k+ of Croke Park.
No one really knows what crowd KT would attract. It’s complete guesswork.
we never even considered hosting any European championships for amateur boxing when we were a power house in that and now while we are a powerhouse in international rowing, not a single TD or journalist has suggested we host even a European championships in that so we have no idea what kind of market exists in Ireland for attending international sports events other than one off soccer or rugby matches
Well we know she struggled to sell out the 3Arena last weekend. Not that much of a stretch to say she'd also struggle at 70k+.
We don't have the infrastructure for the above.
Tickets at a very different price point in a very different context at a different time of the year. And she did sell it out with screw all advertising or promotion.
we don’t have the infrastructure for hosting those events as you mention. Some say it is possible to improve sporting infrastructure but of course people in Ireland have seen very little evidence of that so I understand your ignorance of this if you have mostly lived in Ireland
Tickets started at around 150 for the 3 arena. They would be much much cheaper in croke park.
Out of the 80k+ tickets for somewhere like Croke Park, do you reckon there is only going to be 8,000 tickets prices at €150 or higher? That's the capacity of the 3Arena and that is what she struggled to sell last week. You could get tickets the morning of if you wanted, I thought about it myself. If she can't shift 8,000 tickets at €150, she won't be able to shift the many more that will be at that price and higher.
If someone is struggling to sell the 3Arena, its a massive leap to think they can sell a stadium. Yes, some tickets will be cheaper. Plenty will be more expensive. I think the Aviva is a much better fit for her.
I think you are too committed to the bare numbers in analysis of this.
lets take the second captains podcast. They previewed the fight on Friday and that was it, it barely got a mention in the weeks leading up to the fight otherwise.
if the fight happens in the Aviva or croker it’s going to become one of the events of the summer in Dublin with a lot more buzz.
I don't think buzz is worth a factor of 10. 8000 -> 80.000 is a lot.
I thought Murph was spot on. If it struggles to sell and only gets to 30k, that in the Aviva would be great. That in croker is a damp squib.
Ok, it’s all guesswork, Murph, you and me. Taylor and her camp want croker and if it flops it flops. There’s bigger tragedies in the world.
it probably won’t happen as Ireland aren’t really willing to host boxing events on a really large scale.
what do you expect when nobody in the media dares challenge that narrative.
under the table payments, stolen gate receipts , massive expenses fraud - all ignored and that’s just the last few years
Part of the issue with a Croke Park fight that was ignored was this idea that families would go. If its held in the summer, the main event wont be on until 10 pm ish to cater for the TV station and to allow the arena get darker. That's too late for most kids. So, then you are down to boxing fans, and I dont believe there are enough of them to fill Croker.
Another issue with Croke Park is the sheer size of the pitch. If you are sitting in stands you will be miles away from the action. A smaller stadium like Aviva makes more logistical sense - but I agree with what Gavin Cooney said on Monday - if it's not Croke Park (and I doubt it will be), it doesn't make sense for any stadium.
Whats gavin’s logic on that?
today's episode talks about paul flynn's tweet about clifford. Looking at the quote tweets on that, the stats seem mad weird. 20 retweets to 1400 likes?!

this is a pointless thought I had and didn't know where else to post about it
Ken was surely trolling about those GAA rules today. I hope he was anyway
Yeah he definitely was. Sure even Murph berated himself for falling into Ken's trap
He was saying 1 of the main draws of Croke Park is its cultural significance to the country and other stadiums wouldn't have that.
It's all a big conspiracy
Ah yeah, but I don’t think he meant it was Croker or no where
He literally said Croker otherwise there's no point in terms of having it in a stadium.
