Feels like the right time to start a new thread for next year's gigs.
John Mayer playing the 3Arena on 29 March 2024.
And that's what shows that it's nimbyism at its worst - half the park remains open irrespective of events.
May sound unpopular (not intended!) but might the festival line ups benefit from reduced shows of this level in the city?
Market is hugely saturated lets be real. I'm not trolling here.
Both stadia+RDS, Malahide, St Anne's and Marlay parks, TCD, Iveagh, Collins Barracks, RHK. I'm missing some I think.
No issue with comedy and food fests in Iveagh of course and I do realise it is a beloved, elegant and accessible space.
Not really most our major outdoor festivals are in august and September (usually) when the outdoors shows are really only Collins barracks.
if an international band is in europe June/July then there is no real festival option for them. So they just won’t play in ireland as no option for them if these summer headline outdoor shows are gone.
the stadium shows are acts that are bluntly are never going to play EP or ATN.
also if a band is on a two year album tour then if you just remove summer shows out of the equation then they might just do one festival one summer and nothing else the next or vice versa.
Also some summer outdoor shows cater to audiences that wouldn’t go near a weekend camping festival. For example sting/blondie playing malahide or Lionel Richie playing st Anne’s. It’s not like those artists would play EP or ATN or would a vast majority of the audience of those be down in stradbally.
also a lot of the summer outdoor shows are acts who played festivals the summer before so they aren’t going to return to same festival year after year. So they need the change from outdoor shows one summer to festival show and vice versa.
Fair enough. I could counter all of your points (apart from the stadium points which is v fair) but I see where youre coming from. Whats not referenced is greedy duopoly we have here and the impact that has on live events with constant struggles for control and exclusivity. The punter suffers enormously.
we don’t really have a duopoly here anymore, you have mcd/livenation/ticketmaster/FR controlling most outdoor shows, arena shows and EP and major venues like academy/Olympia and you have aiken putting on a handful of massive shows.
the Punter suffers mainly from the livenation/ticketmaster monopoly and it’s practice of extracting every possible penny.
Gavin James playing trinity.
An absolute Paddy fest everywhere in 24.
First two GIAF Big Top acts announced. Distinctly underwhelming....
The way you outline what I referred to as the "duopoly" is fair. There is v little space for anyone else to get a foothold with all the exclusivity and control. Glad we agree that the punter is suffering hugely.
I feel I've somehow subconsciously willed this to life. I can only apologise.
Handsome family playing liberty hall
Ya beat me to posting it.. :) Liberty Hall gets some interesting artists
Gavin James also announced for Trinity on 3rd July
And has been doing some cracking work bringing in comedy acts recently too.
I noticed Lewis Black was there recently and it sold very poorly, was surprised by that , some of his older stuff is superb.
ugh
Guess it could be with rising costs of touring its cheaper for acts based here to play. Not blown away by the summer gig announcements so far, it's early days yet but think it's relatively poor compared to other years. Hopefully Trinity, Iveagh or Collins Barracks have a few decent acts
Not really. Every country has local acts that are popular.
for scheduling reasons during summer festival season it’s just easier to get a Irish artist on a Friday or Saturday night for a headline show than say an equally popular international band who might be offered European festivals that weekend whereas someone like Gavin James might not be popular across europe so isn’t in as much demand.
like the 2 johnnies aren’t popular outside of ireland so makes sense they play on a Saturday night
Only 1 of my mates knew who he was and still had very little interest in seeing him, if I lived in Dublin I would have gone but not worth the travel IMO
Yes likewise, would like to see him but not travelling to Dublin for 70-80 mins of standup.
Blondie played EP and there would be sufficient Sting/Police fans to draw a crowd. Even Lionel given that we’ve had Chic, Chaka Khan, Candi Staton, Mavis Staples, etc. I really don’t think that there are many acts off limits to the divergent audience at EP but I agree with you that they’re better suited to Malahide, etc.
From a personal perspective happy enough with 2024 so far but each to their own
Had a look for curiosity AC/DCs 2015 Aviva show was announced 12th Dec 2014 and tickets went on sale 17th Dec
The Bug and flowdan playing button factory in February
Jesus and Mary Chain, 40th(!) Anniversary
new tune isn't bad, pretty much what you'd want from JAMC in 2023.
just got presale tickets there. I always enjoy their gigs, might be the first time seeing in the olympia too.
Didn't realise they were already on sale. In case anyone else is interested...

Yeah, I thought it was only album pre-orders myself but noticed there was an MCD presale too so did the ?did=prompre trick.
Indie are taking a break for 2024 and hope to return in 2025.
