A €1000 petrol banger will have an expected higher total cost of ownership than a €3000 EV, even if you do very low miles
I had one very similar to that years ago. 100% reliable until some goon rear-ended me and wrote it off.
I'd be happy to pay a bit more for peace of mind that the petrol banger wouldn't leave me stranded.
It will leave you stranded if you let the tank go empty ;-)
That leaf is a tool, like every other vehicle, every tool has limitations and strenghts ,
An old leaf is a cheap reliable vehicle , but not long range ,
If you dont need long range then happy days -there could be a second car in the drive , it could be for your kid to drive to college but not go tearing around the country , who cares ,
If you dont think its worth 3 grand dont buy it -
Its doesnt need to be religion or politics its just a tool .
Getting all my kids to learn to drive in an electric car is saving me money and time, I can tell you that much alright 😁
That was me - I'm not mad, nor a hippy 😅 We do about 100km per day in ours and it's perfect for our use as a school run car. I did a longer trip with a charge needed to get to the destination (and same on the way back) 2 weeks ago for the craic and it was grand - was there overnight with possibility to charge there too, so started each day completely full. Another trip last weekend that took almost the whole range, charged while we we there all day and came home again. Bought primarily for 3 school runs a day, but just playing around to see what other trips we could replace with it.
These Civics always seem like good value. 2008 1.8 petrol hatchback (which is the engine to have a believe) with a years NCT for 2.5k
I was actually looking at the 2 2 diesel of the Civic, would these be heavy on juice and how reliable?
Nothing wrong with it, to be fair to the seller he's describing it perfectly. I know a fella lives about 8kms from his job, he has an old leaf that brings him in and out to work not a bother on it, he recently switched to the energia 8c tariff he's getting to and from work for feck all😉
My Mrs has that exact model Civic (2007 1.8 Executive) ... bought it about 5yrs ago for €2.8K ! ... Still going strong and has a great stereo (much better than mine :-( ), full leather interior, heated seats etc. She gets about 6.7L / 100KM (mostly short trips).

God, I'm not calling you mad or a hippy at all. I think its great that you can pick up an EV for that kind of money to be honest.
My dad drives 8kms a day to work, parks there for a few hours, back home for lunch, then repeat again in the afternoon and he's actually on about trying an EV just to tick a box and I had showed him some of the ones we are currently chatting about here as it would be perfect for the tiny amount of driving he does, plus he could charge it while at work also. I have even contemplated it myself, but my simplest drive is a 35km round trip to go to my nearest town and back and with a 40km range I would DIE with range anxiety 😂

Ours has 8 bars left, so a little more than the 2 that have been mentioned here recently. I did a test drive out to where my wife works which was 35km each way and I'd 11km indicated left when I got back. I didn't go over 90kph and the kids might have mentioned they were cold once or twice though 😄
Perfect for someone like that. I would rather rely on an ITC engine in case I needed transport in case of emergencies.
Great to see the seller being so honest in all fairness.
It wasn't their main mode of transport but it suits him perfectly for going to work etc.

1. You'd pay 1500-3000 for a bog standard to a decent premium electric moped. And still get wet. And often be dealing with unknown brands or outfits that are stretched financially on warranty backup. And your range would be approximately this. On a 1500-2000w L1e moped. If technology has improved that much. When I imported them, 25 miles was about it.
2. If someone is keen to get into an electric car, then this is very nice. And affordable.
Its not either /or here. As a product that works, I'd buy that all day long. An entry level EV with some wear, as with any vehicle, to the non engine mechanicals but feck all to the motor, generally. The only downside then being the limited juice being supplied. And the fact that even with an engine it would be boring. Bit no more boring than an old Primera, which I have. Reliable is reliable. Cheap is cheap. Its actually a no-brainer, a steal, for the right person.
Wouldn’t call it nonsense. A 40 mile car for €3,000 is a hard sell when you can get a fully functional petrol car for less than half that which will keep you warm and dry all year round and can bring you to the other side of the country if needed.
You don't get the point. People in the market for a very low range bangernomics Leaf, already have another car that can do much longer distance when needed.
As a matter of interest does anyone know what the scrap value of that generation leaf is when it reaches its end of useable life?

Nha I do get it. Its discussed all the time in the EV bargains thread. I just think they are a hard sell for most people when you can get the likes of a petrol Nissan Micra instead. Purchase price is less than half, tax is only €6 extra per month, fuel cost maybe €20 extra per month? Minimal servicing costs per year etc.
I’m not arguing that a lot of people in this country would have a great use case for something like the Leaf, but most people will just go with the petrol alternative.
Not a hard sell when you do the sums, a bangernomics Leaf for €2k is cheaper in total cost of ownership than any petrol car someone gives you for free. Stick the numbers into Excel and find out for yourself. But that last bit is the problem, most people do not have the skills to do that. And even if they did, they don't really understand the difference between a cost and a cash outflow.
Charming 😡. Arrogant or what?? Even by Boards standards that's a bit much. Basic arithmetic will give you what you need, as you say the Leaf certainly makes more sense than a petrol or diesel car.
A left field choice here. Nice cruiser that stands out in the crowd. Bad reputation for reliability, but I had a 2005 Clio that did 350,000km with no major issues, so there are exceptions. Life wouldn't be dull owning this.
6 months NCT, Newish tyres, €1,995.
2003 Renault Vel Satis, 2.0i petrol, manual, about 165bhp I think.
12 months NCT, 1.9TDi, and 3 months tax as an early Christmas present. All for €1,850.
If the timing belt checks out and if the newish tyres are a decent quality then this is worth a look IMO.
But not if you want to buy into an electric car as many do. Its very welcome bangernomics territory and a very useful additional car in any household.
Not at all arrogant. See the other thread, people are even confusing loan repayments with costs. And getting thanks for their posts, so they're not the only one! And that's the very basics (definitions), there is a lot more to it than some basic arithmetic. To guess total cost of onwership you need to make several assumptions and to do that reasonably well, you need to have a good view of the market and history.
Some people are good with maths / sums, some people can change a timing belt, some people can cook a nice meal, some people have the patience to teach others, etc. Everybody has a different set of skills / talents!
Even more patronising... It really doesn't require an Excel spreadsheet to work out the cost of car ownership, it is basic arithmetic, anyway I'm not saying any more on it, I think the Leaf is well advertised and would suit many drivers for a school run, short work commute, somebody with free work charging etc.
Now that is a find! I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted. Though I doubt my mechanic would be pleased to see me arriving with another rare French car!

Taking the rarity of a car like that and the price, plus the fact it's even NCT'd etc, I thought it would have been snapped up long ago!
Market is dead stale. Not even that peach of a €2k Punto Sporting with 2025 NCT has been snapped up yet.
