This is what the public can’t get their heads around.
Two hours on a Sat and Sun basically interviewing people about the stuff they want to promote.
And that’s worth 250 k!
MY JAYSUS!!!!
Exactly.
A perfect example of how rte throw money around them.
I could imagine Ballsy's face when they asked him if he wanted a weekend radio slot on rte1 for 2 x 2hr programmes.
BOC - "Eh, I'm not so sure. Don't like working weekends, won't see the family and all"
Rte - "we'll pay you €250,000 a year".
BOC - "Where do I sign".
And then Bakhurst talks about reducing the hours for presenters on more than €250k to compensate them for their drop in income.
Callans Kicks this week had a good sketch of all the rte stars in a meeting with Bakhurst when he was telling them their wages were getting cut.
When he said the max would be 250k, there was audible sighs of relief and one of them says "jez what about that for a soft landing".
Very true. I'm sure they are heart broken to be limited to 250k. As said, many will simply work less hours so in reality they are earning the same money per hours worked. This is already happening in rte, lot of the big stars are taking more time off.
Also worth noting that MF earned €570,000 in 2008.
Interesting comment here.
Assuming you are not being sarcastic.
BO'C is not the very worst, but the show can be very uneven and he is uber woke and super careful not to get sued nowadays.... He was a subversive young Vincent Browne type when he started out... he is now a sanitised Derek Mooney/Ray D'Arcy enuch clone.
With regards to the being sued part, that ultimately falls on RTÉ. If they told him they had his back he might be more relaxed and not tying himself in knots trying to keep things “balanced”.
With that support he may feel “exposed” and a target for bigoted nutjobs or a disgruntled SF member.
It's a pretty much entirely predictable show - formulaic. Predictable guests, predictable topics and predictable interventions. Just boring and has been after the first few weeks.
For those who it appears haven’t noticed, Ballsy’s programme consists of 25% interaction with a selected panel, usually journos.
The other 75% of it is punters promoting their own creations or people reviewing others work.
€250k for that is good going so one can imagine why Ballsy seems to act
like a cat on a hot tin roof between 1200 and 1300 on Sundays.
Wouldnt want to jeopardise that auld gig in fairness.
That's pretty much every chat show all over the world - Norton and Ross get great high profile guests, but they're all promoting their latest movie or album.
Brendan is currently asking his guests about the riots, then goes into 'Don't get me sued' mode when they answer.
I notice they are all pretty much singing off the choreographed hymn sheet ~ 'anyone with reservations re continuous immigration, doubts about vaccines blah, blah are all involved in the far right and being manipulated by dark forces' etc
If you're going to deal with these matters, would the show not at least offer some modest alternative view?
Funnily enough at the close, someone spoke to state services being under pressure. Why the hell do they think state services are under pressure? You can't just keep increasing the population and expecting to meet all needs in housing, education, health, policing without substantial investment.
You really take his programme seriously. I mean his go to guest to comment on Thursday night was Ebun Joseph.
Chu on, me off.
It's supposedly public service broadcasting and should reflect the views of a cross section of Irish society. What we're hearing is a cosy consensus, a piece of PR from the state.
Scammers using text messages now apparently, a whole new level of sophistication!
Brendan's blanket advice to older people is not to click on any links. How patronising!
An extremely well spoken woman was especially upset about the far-right opposing "the establishment". There was no such thing as the establishment, she insisted.
While sitting in Ireland's most exclusive coffee morning.
The irony.
Newstalk has had Jess Kelly on over the last few weeks saying the same thing.
You, or I, may find it patronising but the fact of the matter is that a lot of old, and younger less “tech savvy”, are clicking these links daily.
And when the woman at the end was giving out the address of the site for checking if an email is a scam he talked over her and cut her off.
Hazel's started talking about tensions building for a long time, but it was too much for Brendan who cut her off.
It is RTE not letting hand picked politically collect guests talk about the issues that help cause tensions to build up.
Uhmmm ……lot of ‘excuses’ being pumped out as a reason for this mindless rioting on Friday.
In a country which is crying out for workers, one has to wonder why, and why a crowd of that size can gather on a Friday.
Paul Murphy is hosting a rally at lunchtime Monday. He will get numbers too.
In a country that is crying out for workers....
Yep, difficult to square that circle.
Some section of the population is been ridden ragged based on those statistics.
Was wondering where all the South Dublin lefty crowd were hiding when there were actual facists they could have tackled, especially with no police to stop them.
Another thing is, last week Ruth Coppinger and co regarded these rioting scumbags as "victims" and "misunderstood" - now she has changed her tune
I meant to post this at the weekend.
Well worth a listen.
Surprising but interesting enough interview with Victoria this morning, the sort of thing you might have heard back in Finucane's day.
Then post midday he descends into his usual maudlin psychoanalysis rubbish, dissecting above. Off with it.
Hope he wears his cool scarf
I'm sure Harding sleeps somewhere in the rte building.
He does ramble on.
Thoroughly enjoyed that and wasn't expecting to. Good broadcasting.
Five 'listens' about a minute in the bit with the Geordie one,Sarah....need to up your game Ballsy
