Really thought there was an etiquette of every station not starting the Christmas songs until December 1st, but this has obviously gone out the window under the Bauer regime. I’m sure it makes them more money in some way…
Always liked D'Arcys way of building up through the Christmas songs
Ray or Fergal?
Ray
Yup. First week of December, you'd get the one-bauble songs. Like the worst song ever written, Paul McCartney's 'Everyone's having a wonderful christmastime.' You had to wait until nearly christmas week to get your four-bauble 'Fairytale of New York' or 'Last Christmas'. It was even better for Whamgeddon! (Which didn't exist back then!)
The next poster will now say that Paul McCartney song is brilliant...
I've turned off Today FM twice over the weekend because of Christmas songs, Fairy tale of New York may be a great song but in the middle of November it's a no from me.
Ian Dempsey played two Christmas songs in about 40 minutes if each other. Painful stuff
Will Leahy even called them out over it this morning on his show. RTÉ are sticking to their guns that as per Larry Gogan's preference the first Christmas song gets played on the 1st of December.
Agree 100% on Pamela. I only infrequently get to listen to daytime radio, but you'd be guaranteed a laugh tuning in. A big loss, she was born to it.
Nearly sure Today FM were playing the Christmas songs this early last year too. All to do with the GoLoud Christmas station.
First half hour of Dave's show was devoted to Christmas, come on like.....
The problem now for stations is that they don't want to be left behind once the Xmas songs start being played.
So if rte2 plays one, today FM feel they can't wait another 2 weeks before they start.
And so on, so on.
As a result, in a few years it'll be Nov 1st and not Dec 1st that we hear the 1st Xmas song on irish radio.
It's like the black Friday stuff. Used to be advertised a say or two before. Then it was a week, now they talk about it for all of November.
First I knew about this, just now. Did she give a reason by any chance?
I reckon they’re playing a Christmas song every hour or two. It’s definitely convinced me to turn off for a few weeks anyway
I’d say there’s a bit of an attempt to lessen any impact Xmas FM might have. The thinking might be, either let’s kill the Christmas spirit by starting too early, or let’s remove the need to switch for the novelty.
Maybe To-Dub FM couldn't be arsed to let her do a show from Galway? 😂
Ah jaysus, guy just got the €120k + cash machine call wrong. How, just how, considering they always send texts. Bit fishy if you ask me
I wouldn't say it sounded fishy, I have a feeling he may have entered forgot and nerves got the better of him.
He did ask straight away if it was Fridays total or todays and he tried to give Fridays amount. Poor fucker
Tight.
I've heard callers get the amount wrong before, but I got a fake vibe too about this caller.
No doubt my suspicions are wrong
But Fridays amount can't have been €180k ?
Why are you mentioning 180k? He didn't.
He didn’t seem to know if it was 100k or 80k. I took it as he started off trying to guess 100k and then tried to say it was 83k but it was just a stab in the dark.
It sound to me like he said 180 something k
What amount did he say?
"One hundred thousand, and eight hundred" etc etc.
Fridays amount was 100'833.89 and I think that's what he said, he definitely threw a few 8s in anyway.
When he started off asking about Friday's amount I had a bad feeling about it. Then I realised he'd been introduced as just Forename from a county, not Forename Surname from a place within a county, and that usually means a wrong guess. And sure enough...
Do you mean sometimes they might just put out a fake call to some "actor" just to not give away the money and have a more attractive jackpot?
Yeah it all sounded a bit odd to me.
Does anyone verify what they're doing in the comp? Like the auditors at the Lotto. Fairly large sums involved
