RTE have been quoting Hamas run Gazan Ministries as if it were the UN itself, and not a genocidal terrorist movement.

    This again?

Throughout four wars and numerous bloody skirmishes between Israel and Hamas, U.N. agencies have cited the Health Ministry’s death tolls in regular reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross and Palestinian Red Crescent also use the numbers.

In the aftermath of war, the U.N. humanitarian office has published final death tolls based on its own research into medical records.

In all cases the U.N.'s counts have largely been consistent with the Gaza Health Ministry’s, with small discrepancies.

    — 2008 war: The ministry reported 1,440 Palestinians killed; the U.N. reported 1,385.

    — 2014 war: The ministry reported 2,310 Palestinians killed; the U.N. reported 2,251.

    — 2021 war: The ministry reported 260 Palestinians killed; the U.N. reported 256.

While Israel and the Palestinians disagree over the numbers of militants versus civilians killed in past wars, Israel’s accounts of Palestinian casualties have come close to the Gaza ministry’s. For instance, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said the 2014 war killed 2,125 Palestinians — just a bit lower than the ministry’s toll.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel has killed “thousands” of militants in the current war, without offering evidence or precise numbers.

International news agencies, including AP, as well as humanitarian workers and rights groups, have used the ministry’s numbers when independent verification is impossible.

“These figures are professionally done and have proven to be reliable,” said Omar Shakir, Human Rights Watch’s Israel and Palestine director, adding he remained “cognizant of different blind spots and weaknesses” such as the failure to distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Regardless of who Hamas is or what else they do, the numbers of the Health Ministry are accurate. That's why.

I think you could be exaggerating/doom-mongering there somewhat ("Game Over!"/"F-cked!")?

Just another sday with a y in it, poor "Europe" is always about to be "f-cked" ...(excl. UK perhaps - Brexit and Boris Johnson have made the UK Great Again! 😛)

Collective punishment on a village of women and children for the actions of rebels?

    That's a war crime.

Also, the regime doesn't even deny that many thousands of Gazan civilians have been killed. Their line is that the thousands of civilian deaths are an 'unfortunate necessity' in the drive to eliminate Hamas (it would seem that some of the pro-Israel supporters are not even following what their favoured regime is saying when they admit widespread civilian deaths).

Thanks for the map. Don't know ins and outs of the oil trade by sea

I still think belief that the Iranian proxies (or perhaps even Iran itself) are going to [easily] be able to shut down the Suez canal, and that will be "game over"/"Europe f-cked" etc. etc., is doom mongering.

If they are mad enough to try it, I think it likely there will be a wider war in the ME again (the US will be dragged in).

30% of global LNG exports depart from the gulf, 50% of that goes to Europe through Suez. In rough terms today it means the loss of 3 Nord stream pipeline supplies which is impossible to replace.

20% of global oil exports which means 8 million barrels a day to Europe which is eight times the global production cuts Saudi did earlier this year which is impossible to replace.

Add in all trade from Asia to Europe and vice a versa totally screwed with just in time supply chains waiting 3 months longer for parts and things.

UK screwed also as 30% of gas comes from the gulf as well as oil and everything else which means they they have a massive shortfall and need to totally cut exports which effects others even more.

Then you get into the price implications = screwed.

Don’t you mean that would be a war crime?Because it is something that hasn’t happened.

So it is important to trade.

Unless it's somehow damaged extremely badly, I cannot see how Iran's friends or even the Iranians themselves are going to be able to keep it closed for very long (by actions like you suggested, attacking ship(s) transiting or seeding a minefield - would have thought they'd be seen quickly enough doing latter too).

If it was such a "game over" winning move to cripple the Great and all the Little Satans of the West + economically hurt the Sunni Gulf states/Saudi, the Mullahs would have done it years ago I think. They haven't, because they look down the road to what might happen next.

IMO all (well main thing, apart from causing economic disruption you've been talking about while it is closed) it would do is start a bigger war, similar to what would happen if Iran or friends under their direction launch a serious attack on Israel (they haven't done that either).

edit: I suppose this began from a discussion of escalations which is fair enough i.e. what might happen after if US bombed/attacked the Houthis etc.

Trying to block up the canal would be a big escalation, and would anger an awful lot of countries.

Probably even the Arab oil producers would not be too displeased to see the US start waging war in the ME yet again (on Iran and its proxies) if they start running amok and threatening to destroy their trade.

Arab oil sellers dont give a **** if they have to send oil via the Suez or have to send it all the way round Africa or even via the north pole. At the end of the day the buyer pays the postage and packaging.

Israel find a tunnel, in another week it will be connected to a 100 meter tunnel.

The existence of a 40 year tunnel under the hospital was literally common knowledge : "Al-Shifa is the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip; it was originally a British army barracks, but converted into a hospital in 1946. In the 1980s, Israel built a bunker and tunnel network underneath the hospital." (Wikipedia).

The tunnel entrance itself is of significant size and exhibits signs of significant age.The transition from the drone going down with a different camera light and a central marker in the middle to another camera is very odd. The change in lighting between the two shots is particularly noticeable, with a significant difference in brightness. This shift in camera quality raises questions about the authenticity of the presented content.

The drone footage has captured what could be an entrance to a tunnel or sewer system near the hospital. The switch to a different scene is curious. This one is for the conspiracy forums.Due to the fact that only a drone can get inside the tunnel, why is the footage changing? Does the footage need to be consistent throughout be real?

I found this footage looks some people have edited both pieces of footage together to claim the tunnel was fake. However, based on this footage I found online, the footage the Israeli government showed appears to be legitimate

One crucial piece of evidence that supports the legitimacy of the Israeli footage is the presence of concrete shoring holes around the tunnel's edges. See the same features in both videos.

Why does the camera change? Israeli soldier entered the tunnel to investigate, with a camera.

So you also agree that the Palestinians have the same right to defend themselves? It wasn't clear in your first post.

But it was widely reported in the media last week that the Israelis themselves had built a tunnel under the hospital in 1983 (and the one in the video does look 40 years old).

"We want to depressurize, deescalate, and ultimately integrate the Middle East region. The war in Yemen is in its 19th month of truce, for now, the Iranian attacks against U.S. forces have stopped, our presence in Iraq is stable -- I emphasize for now, because all of that can change. And the middle east region is quieter today than it has been in two decades,"

Hamas are scum and Netenyahu's government is scum. Victims are also perpetrators on both sides. Anyone who denies that and claims one side is blameless is either plain dumb or blinded by ideology.

The video presented a tunnel that appeared to be real. It depicted a tunnel with no other content except a door at the end. However, there was no indication in the video of Hamas headquarters, as claimed by Israel. The video ended abruptly at the door, Is it an old tunnel i cant say?

You know exactly the same as anyone else following the story. You don't know how much or how little the Israelis have examined of the tunnels. Its just your opinion and just as good a guess as anyone else has. The Israelis made a huge statement about a Command Centre in the hospital but after days of searching have not discovered it. The doctors in the hospital said it was never there. Its just a lot of posturing and bluster to cover their bombing of innocent and sick patients, that's my opinion and I don't have to be in the military to come to that view.
