Help those of us that think distance in miles etc.
No need to convert to imperial
He might have been shooting at the two blokes on the left, missed, and got lucky.
something off about this claim. Was he on target the first shot or did he need a few shots to compensate? surely the russians would hear bullets zip near them as he gets closer. If it's a hole in one well then 1 in a billion shot. saw a diagram saying the bullet would have had to gain 200 meters up at the apex of trajectory to hit at that distance.
That's over 2 miles. 1609.34 meters = 1 mile.
If true it also throws a deeply unflattering light on just how incapable North Korea itself might be were the shooting started. I've no idea how reunification polls in the South but if the North can't even manufacture outdated Soviet material you'd speculate just how much of a paper tiger Pyongyang truly is. I don't think there's any risk or anything but you'd wonder if South Korean hawks are suddenly a degree more boisterous.

Beatings will continue until morale improves
In case anyone has doubts about Russian barbarism despite supporting evidence after all these years
I’m a little surprised myself. I had gotten the impression that North Korea were especially talented in maintaining Soviet Cold War kit. Cuba for example had been caught in previous years trying to ship their MIGs over to them for repairs.
I had sort of built up an impression in my own mind that Pyongyang had out of necessity mastered the art of “Mend and make do” by maintaining technology they had access to via the Soviet Union, but had been subsequently cut off from.
However, if this report is true, I welcome being disabused of this impression. It would mean that yet another avenue for Russia to gain help is yet another dud.
Like shooting fish in a barrel
From the FT today
A Bulgarian arms magnate who survived two Russian assassination attempts in 2015 has raised the alarm about a sabotage campaign that he says Moscow has been waging for years as it tries to disrupt crucial weapons supplies to Ukraine.
Emilian Gebrev, whose company, Emco, produces much of the Bulgarian output of Soviet-standard bullets and tank shells shipped to Kyiv, told the Financial Times that Russian saboteurs have actively targeted his factories and depots — including after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year.
The paranoia is really reaching the edges of outright madness now. If I was Gerasimov or Shoigu, I'd be getting seriously worried now....

Goes through where we are to interesting ideas how Putin can be squeezed further
Especially recommended for “givup and give Putin what he wants” camp
Thank you for this post.
It certainly brought a smile to my face. In my mind's eye I can see a cartoon-like busted barrel and a vodka-addled mobik bashing it with a dud shell, shouting "Soviet artillery, Russian artillery, all made in North Korea!"
A proud Drumpf!
That’s nothing to be tooting about for a descendant of proud German stock. :D
Don't be silly. I can't even speak any German, never mind have a conversation in it.
Some RU forces have had enough.
Yes exactly, and after bicycle crossings were banned in 2015, they came in cheap Ladas instead (and abandoned them at the border). So it makes sense to just close the border completely this time, since everyone already knows what phase 2 of the Russian shenanigans will be.
A modern form of the old colonialist slave trading practices.
Lukashenko has been doing it on Belarus' borders with the EU for years (as mentioned above), at very least the tactic was discussed with Russia if not given the nod by the Big Boss in Moscow, so not a shock to see Russia start it up themselves on a different border.
I suppose relations are so bad they probably don't give a crap any more if Finland closes the border to them completely.
I highly doubt only 4% actually work. It would have to be much higher than that. 4% would be absolutely ridiculous.
Can we also stop this myth that Ukraine has only received 300k shells from the 'west' in 6 months. The 300k is the specific number supplied to Ukraine under an EU plan. It excludes the UK/USA etc...
Ukraine have fired on average 6k a day for the past 6 months. That's just over 1mil fired. So 700k just magically appeared?
Still though this sticks out:
Their dud rate isn't much worse than that of ru's. Moreover, they're often recently produced in contrast what we've seen from ru stocks. So, nothing to cheer about.
We got 300K in 6 months while russia got 1M in 1 month. Use any dud rate you like, it doesn't favor us.
Tbf the dud rate probably isn't much worse then Russia's old stocks already.
Ah, did not know that. Thank you for the clarification :)
Finland had the same loophole
In the huge migration of refugees around 2015 there were thousands of bikes abandoned at a checkpoint in lapland
They tried the same a few years ago - back then the migrants got cheap Ladas, drove (or were driven by the Russians) to the border, dumped the car and walked across the border.
This time the Finns closed the four southernmost border crossings at the first sign of the same thing happening again. But migrants can still cross from two border crossings further up north.
Normally Russia demands full documentation from anyone attempting to leave the country - but when they want to flood the border with migrants, they waive the requirements.
If I remember right, the bicycle loophole was specifically related to the small Russia / Norway border near Kirkenes. For some reason Norwegian law very specifically controlled crossing that border by foot or by motorised vehicles….but for some reason Bicycles were never specified, thus creating that loophole (which I believe has been since closed).
I have no idea if Finland had a similar loophole, but I going to guess these Russians might have been mistakenly conflating Norwegian and Finnish border rules.
Not quite like that
In normal times the Russians would stop people on there side so they wouldn't even reach the Finnish border guard's
But lately they have been letting them go straight through and then thy claim asylum
Finland closed all four southern borders yesterday apart from the rail connection, but four checkpoints in the north are still open
But the government has already said that if the refugees start coming in in the northern checkpoints they will close them all
EDIT Today 40 refugees arrived at the first checkpoint, so would not be surprised if they are closed soon
Every single person i have spoke to here in Finland wants them all shut
Today the Russians in Finland protested about it in Helsinki, again every single person i spoke to had same thought
If they love it so much go home
One of the organizers was an IT guy who ran here from Russia in 2022 to escape their draft
Now they want to complain that its there human right to visit Russia
There is no understanding the Russian brain
There was a loophole that anyone cycling could cross the border. So Russian border guards were driving the migrants towards the border and then letting them off on bicycles. (That loophole is no more in recent days.)
Putin has used this as a dirty trick to destabilise the EU even before the recent war. They were flying refugees in from Africa on military planes to Belarus to cross the border into Poland.
Even in Africa they were running campaigns telling people to head north for the EU.
Right before the war Africans were brought to Russia and let into Ukraine. Then Russian propagandists were making clips of Ukrainians against black people which if you didn't know you lapped it up. Instead of the other side being against Putin using migrants as a weapon and propaganda piece against the country.
The Kremlin sits back and laughs their heads off at all this.
A warlord from Libya who takes money from the migrants for the sea crossings was not that long ago dined in Moscow.
It's a continuation from Putin's low level terrorism from his east german days to the west.
