Reliable car for 10k?

Hi looking for suggestions for a reliable car for 10k. (cash, not finance)

I don't drive too much daily but occasionally drive home to see the parents (140km return trip) maybe once every 2 weeks.

Looking for something reliable for the next 3-5 years.

Ideally something spacious and low maintenance.. had some bad luck with cars and pretty tired of it.

Need to put on a roof-rack for 2 kayak's.

Petrol, reliable, never a problem with it, never needed to put anything in it besides the occasional oil change.

(Traded it in, so nothing in it for me)

They change them back to standard for the NCT, you never hear "Choooo" from a car being tested

The amount of gobshites doing this especially n rural Ireland is annoying. Basic cars with tin can sooted exhausts blowing out filthy smoke with off the shelf maps. It's absolutely rank.

How this isn't checked for at NCTs is beyond me as its not that difficult to do. What's the point really? No harm getting a nice exhaust but don't go out of your way to make the air around us substantially worse.

I didn't actually never had any DPF/EGR issues. I removed them as the car was getting a louder exhaust installed. This was part of the performance increase when it was mapped for power.

I have found Toyotas to be reliable. Peugeots not too much. I would recommend Nissan or Kia’s worth looking into they be just as reliable as Toyotas. An Audi, Hyundai or Skoda if looking for something bigger.

Totally. We have had two Lexus 200h for a good few years, serviced annually with about 150KM on it. The only issue with them was the heat shield came down on the exhaust and just needed a wider washer to hold it up.

Outstanding cars in fairness.

To be fair Toyota and Lexus hybrids are the most reliable cars on the roads. Theres absolutely loads of them with over 300k km’s on the clock and theres a good few of them with over half a million miles. Theres not much to go wrong with them and even the hybrid batteries are relatively cheap to replace.

Plenty of Prius taxis going around with well north of 500k km on them.

The OP doesn't need a diesel for the type of driving they are doing. The OP buying a diesel will just invite unnecessary trouble.

Complete opposite in my opinion. Electric/Hybrid vehicles have not been around near as long so i dont have much faith in them if anything goes wrong your in for a nice bill. If you fear having DPF/EGR problems just get them removed ta F**k. Had it done on my car along with a power map. Completely different car didn't have any issues before, but at least it cant have any issues in the future.

Well I beg to differ with you, these engines can easily do half a million miles without much trouble if looked after and serviced properly, plenty additives on the market to prevent getting clogged up and as regards mpg I can personally vouch for c60 mpg from one of these, I know of a person in my area who invested in an electric car but cracked the battery when it bottomed out on a B road and hit a hump and there are plenty of these roads if you don’t live on the M50 or it’s likes

Diesels of that age and around the 200k miles mark can have clogged EGR and DPF which can be very expensive to put right. Even low milage older diesels can have similar issues if they are not driven hard enough. In short any diesel is a high risk bet.

A hybrid would definitely be a good bet since you have few worries with batteries and the petrol engine has been operated in its optimum range all its life. Very reliable and cheaper than a petrol to run.

That's going to be about 12 years old. And you won't get 60mpg out of them either, not even close. 40ish combined.

Indeed, any German car in that price range can be far from trouble free. And the driving the OP says they cover doesn't require a diesel car either.

For that kind of money get yourself a nice car such as a C or E type Merc, capable of high mileage with very little expense. The 2.1 diesel will do close to 60 mpg and tax is 270 yearly, if it has the smaller engine it is Renault
