Except for Waterford.
Different breeds and different solar system there.
It's great to throw out ideas. Nothing worse then the quite fellow in the corner, gathering information and saying nothing. I'm farming 30 years and doing foolish things. In fact I think I'm getting more foolish.
I'm watching Mary Lou on the TV. I swear she's after getting away darker. She must be going after the black voters
I see in the IFJ a farm manager job going for a 450 cow operation in East Meath offering 30k for a 40hr week plus weekends. Hard to see the attraction in that unless it came with some sort of accommodation and even then....🤔
Could you use a gate to subdivide a pen in the slats?
I could I suppose. With bulls I don't like chancing things. A neighbor lost a grand bull a few years ago. He jumped the gate and got caught hanging over it.
They are out now out in a sheltered rough place. See how it goes
Loads of similar adds …..they know they won’t get any Irish workers at that sort of money ……
That's box ticking. Loads of similar ads as it's a requirement to try hire locally first before applying for permits and visas for non EU lads to come.
Friend of mine has a Nigerian lad milking for him. He came to Ireland to a big unit in Cork, was paid and housed, but says he didn't have enough really to have a life outside of the 50+ hours worked per week. Dunno how my buddy landed on him but he's happy out. Says he's a good worker and is paying him more than that 30k for less hours. Both parties happy at the minute but we'll see when calving starts
Its a race to the bottom with dairy farmers they have all the tricks in the book students foreign labour.Do they ever consider for a few quid more they could get good local staff who are more likely to stay longterm.
Yes, he said he dropped cow numbers to feed them from farming instead of from the Americas.
When I had an ad on line looking for someone, I'd get calls from Africans looking for me to take on one of their own and organise visas and paperwork and accommodation. Wasn't what I wanted to get involved in
Quite the hero isn't he
Open an newspaper, turn on the radio, switch on the TV, if there is anything about farming it will be cheerleading the lads who are into "alternative farming". Mainstream commercial farming is a no no. If we had the place covered in nettles, thistle and ragworth we would be great lads. And then there is the new buzzword "regenerative" whatever that means. But when it comes to industry or aviation its a different story, push on regardless. It would sicken your hole.
No rational person would do that. Your cheap labour wouldn't be so cheap after a few dumped bulk tanks.
your spot on there Donald you have to pay a man right or he will be gone elsewhere a good man is neat 20 euro a hour nowadays
Quiet
Browsing at the latest co-op report and done a rough calculation on total price received for 2023 will be circa 41 cent incl vat at roughly 4.3%bf and 3.5pr, 2021 averaged 39.6 cent, when you think back how cheap inputs where then compared to now it really puts into perspective how bad a year this year is turning out to be
Well look at ifj each week yud imagine therd be one add 40k for gd experience
Regenerative farming has FA to do with that - its about restoring the living part of the soil, producing healthier animals, reducing need for medications and associated resistance issues, preventing nutrient loss and soil erosion etc, all of which has relevance for all types of farming.
Indeed thanks for that.... .....pedantic....prick
The concept of making money from farming is seen as a vulgarity by the upwardly mobile folk. You are supposed to do it for the love of it, not for a living. There is something deep in psychology of the 1st/2nd generation Irish (sub)urban dweller that drives this I think. It would be a crushing disappointment to think that your cousins, who stayed behind down the country, are earning more than you in your mid-range commuter belt career. Much nicer to believe in the poor-but-happy artisan farmer myth.
Ya but it's beginning to wear on myself especially just a bit all the nonsense on the radio and telly is gone beyond bearable imo anyway 🤷....... mYbe I'm just grumpy with the poor year but it really does seem that agri is the only sector that our output income and ultimately our livelihood is being restricted

Matt Carthy wants farmers in the border counties to pay the salaries of 78 workers for the sake of keeping the jobs going. That's about €4.5 million quid spent on unnecessary labour costs.
More economic illiteracy from him- why would we be surprised?
Making the CAP fairer and better targetted would be a start and would be something that most in society could get behind. I think there is alot of goodwill generally for restoring/supporting Ireland's fruit, native grain and veg sector and would be an easier sell too in terms of maintaining CAP monies ahead of dilution via EU expansion East
A lot of people wouldn't be surprised. The 35% of the electorate that support them don't seem to think of anything except to get the present government out.
Oswaldo?
There's a fair cohort of the farming sector that also despises farmers that make a good living out of farming.
We all think were the only ones getting hard time but i have friends in other buisnesses and its just as hard regulation crazy costs only people doing well is hospitality Were paid to close during covid. Now housing refugees.
What percentage of hotels are housing refugees? Did the payments during covid come close to covering revenue? Everyday you come out with something that makes you look absolutely clueless
Well the pubs didn't have much winging about being closed during COVID in fairness and look at the prices hotels are charging for a nights accommodation. They had the government in their pocket for a long time with the 9% vat rate.
Hospitality doing well? The few hotels that are accommodating refugees might be doing well but that has a knock on affect on restaurants and pubs in those areas. Plenty of then are struggling with a few closing their doors around my part recently. So no hospitality is not doing well.
