Keeping Snyman would be a complete folly even if possible.
Id' be surprised if Kleyn was not offered a new contract. He may simply want to go abroad. Could see the length of the contract offered by Munster being an issue alright though.

I reckon that this is just agents spiel. the usual contract rubbish.
Kleyn has put down roots here. built a house. But with 2 NIQ south african second rows. we will probably lose RG. Lets hope he changes the second half of the season like he did for us last year.
I think Munster will def offer him a competitive contract. The variable is if the irfu ok it.
I'd be very surprised if there was any issue with the retention of Kleyn. It would be an idiotic move by the IRFU if they blocked it. He's an important player to Munster in the prime of his career. They have young talent coming through but that's what it is...young talent. EOC, Edogbo and Ahern are great prospects but have a combined 45 minutes of European rugby (all Ahern from the bench).
I would imagine that Kleyn wants to stay also. Wife and house here as well as his own family having moved to the UK and Ireland in recent years. The only fly in the ointment could be another team offering him money that's too good to say no to and taking a 3 year deal there to set himself up financially. It's unlikely that the IRFU or Munster are going to be able to offer him that same level of compensation.
There is no reason other than the IRFU being cagey that Kleyn couldn't be offered a 3 year deal.
Just saw that RG is having the surgery in South Africa. Would that be under South Africa’s medical team or would Munster not have preferred to send him to a local specialist? Would have thought that injuries are usually assessed by your club and managed and rehabbed by them. Perhaps they preferred to have him get it done ASAP whilst he’s still on his downtime in SA post World Cup?
Kleyn should be getting a central contract. Having a World Cup winner around to impart his wisdom and confidence would be a big boost to one of the Provinces.

It is reasonably unusual but not unprecedented. I suspect on a personal level it is easier for him to have it in SA, but it doesn't exactly speak volumes about his commitment to Munster.
I suppose in theory it is possible Munster preferred him to get it done asap there.

I'm not a betting man but I'd put money on the IRFU ending his time at Munster rather than Snyman ending his time here.
I'm sure they will but Munster would be fools to offer him a new contract anyway (albeit if it is coming from private funds its no skin off their nose I guess).
He has more minutes for South Africa than Munster since he joined.
That's a different story altogether. His game time with Munster had nothing to do with his commitment to the province or are you insinuating he faked his injuries
It is not a personal sleight on the man. But his focus is clearly on South Africa and I do not blame him for that. This is the problem with recruiting tier 1 internationals.
Obviously he waited til after the world cup for surgery, as anyone would. Though having it in SA is a bit odd. But it also clearly not a good investment for Munster.
It depends on how you value minutes. He was really good in the final.
If kitshoff only plays in knockout wins for us i’ll take it.

I do think we value elite play wrongly though. The regular season in rugby is a seeding exercise. That’s it. The point of signing someone like snyman is knockout rugby. That worked out in the end.
All this is true but I'm really missing the point you made earlier about his commitment to Munster.
We (Ireland) don't have m/any International players playing abroad anymore, the most recent being Sexton.
When he was playing for Racing I can't recall anyone commenting on his commitment to Racing while he continued to play for Ireland and pick up injuries that ruled him out for club and country.

It's worth considering what we think we are getting from NIQ players. Some, like Snyman who has 2 WC medals in his pocket belong to an older idea that you bring proven winners to inspire the group, establish high levels of professionalism and mentor younger players. This was a foundational strategy for Irish rugby and brought some very important influences to the provinces, Nacewa, Thorn, Howlett, Pienaar, Vermuelen, etc. And of course we've always had a need for big second rows. But more recently we've had less of these types of players, partly because we have caught up in the pro stakes and partly because we produce better players. More recently we've brought in younger players who are established but fewer former and current internationals, partly because we want them available during international windows. Anyway, Snyman is a bit anachronistic and entering his third season of being unavailable through injury you'd wonder what's the point.
I mean he had clauses in his contract to attend Irish training sessions. He was 100% more committed to Ireland than Racing and I'm fairly sure they thought so too.
This should not be confused with questioning his commitment while playing. But I think investing in Tier 1 active internationals, particularly SH ones, is a terrible idea for all of the provinces.
Again, all that can be true but it fails to explain how you think RGS commitment to Munster is anything less than any other player we've signed.
If he wasn't injured and featured for us since his arrival we wouldn't (shouldn't) be having this discussion.
All the coaches & players that have talked about RG during the period of his injuries have talked about how professional & positive he was and how influential he was with other players.
I really fail to see how you can question his commitment to Munster.
You weren't reading many French message boards then.
Because he's an active Tier 1 international. I think the same would be true of any of them. It's not a good investment and there is a reason the provinces don't tend to go in that direction.

We signed him as an Active Tier 1 RWC winning international.
He's still an active Tier 1 RWC winning international
We now have 3 of them in the 2nd row, and could well see Ahern step up to international duty this season with Edogbo also on the radar. As long as we have some cover for the short international windows and can maintain the power and quality we need for the knockouts, I don't think any Munster fans would see that as a bad thing, especially with the potential for having a 3 lock pack to call on when we need them

He's committed to Munster and plays for international rugby just like any other international player, that's why there are international windows.
The fact he has more minutes for SA than Munster is not down to his commitment it's solely down to injuries.
