Galtymore route

Hi,

Myself and the 9 year old have climbed about 30 mountains over last 3 years e.g. Croagh Patrick, Diamond hill, Derryclare, Benbaun, Binnmhor, Blackstairs, Slievenamon, Corcogmore, Moylussa, Lackavrea etc - so nothing over complicated

Looking at climbing Galtymore, I know it can be done from the south side on a nice path and then you come to a group of stones and go cross country to either Galtymore or Galtybeg. Think this is about 4 hours in total.

I am thinking of doing it from the north side, where you go to Lough Curra and then climb from here, is this a safe route or kinda dangerous?

Roughly how long would this route from the north take?

Did you end up going via Lough Curra? When we were there a couple of years ago it looked reasonably doable, but then you've got a 9 year old to consider. This group look liked they headed up the way you were considering.

Hey. No we didn't do Lough Curra as I wasn't totally sure of the route so left it off, seems quiet steep in parts etc

We climbed Galtybeg and Galtymore via the 'Galtymore south Car park' (Black road route)

Was a nice day and an enjoyable climb

Yes, we found Galtymore's relief to the north very impressive. Reading through your list in your original post, have you considered doing the highest peak in every county? It looks like you've got at least half of them ticked off already and a good geographic spread in there.

I think my list above only has 2 county high points

benbaun in Galway

moylussa in clare.

and now Galtymore in Tipp is 3.

so a good bit to go.

and actually attempted Knockmealdown (Waterfords high point) at weekend but had to give up due to visibility and weather etc (got to top of sugarloaf beside it alright)

so getting there but a long way off half way yet :)

The good news is you've also done Limerick with Galtymore and there's only 26 to climb in total :) We loved Benbaun as well; the view out over Connemara was unique. Correction, Galtymore is FOUR :-D It's also the highest point in Limerick

nice one. Maybe it was the route we took, but near the top of Benbaun it was very very slippy, small stones, no grip, on the way down we literally had to slide down the stones and get as low to the ground as we could.
