Not last spring …spring before …heap of small twins ….did well to get 2 euros if I’m honest
Mike Murphy of positive farmers fame.
Was that not organised by Glanbia and IFJ
I can’t remember were they stake holders or just cheerleaders 😂
sure they(teagasc) never thought about the bull calves
No shame in getting 2 euro once they were fed. I got 30 to 40 but they drank three weeks milk. I keep most for beef. The earlier the loss is nearly always the smallest.
No one gets fat with fr bull calves. But it's fuuckers sending them in starved with their navels still wet. Left in the mart when no one buys them. I would fully support the department closing down those farmers for their own good, as they can't physically or mentally cope with the challenges of farming in spring
Why not just use sexed semen. Got a great hit here with the autumn calvers, had 2 fr bulls. A lad bought them and 20 other calves out of the yard. Ordered sexed for using for winter ai today
I agree with a lot of what you say usually ginger but that post is completely wrong
They where balls deep in it, sure the head honcho was jk's wife she was the captain steering the ship for all intents and purposes
Jersey breeding was been recommended by everyone back then and for big units they were right and still are cows have too walk long distance in 100 plus herds and jersey can do this friesians cant they have high solids which maximises banding.Sexed semen can be used to breed replacements beef calves from xbred can be sold for gd money but they must be well reared and thats whats wrong on these xbred herds not enough time cus so many calves.
Coulnt agree more with all u said
In my opinion if the cow don't improve also and margins improve in beef, the Angus calf will go the way of Friesian bull calf in short..sexed semen won't solve the glut of calves in early March.
Well I am not fan of Teagasc, but the facts are it was Glanbia and IFJ that pushed the greenfield project and Teagasc were pushing high ebi fresians.
Tegasc had a heavy hand on advice and the project followed the kiwi model it v heavily pushed.
Ya, I'd agree with you there
No not at first Jersey was the golden bullet apparently. Then the kiwi effort of whatever breeding it was. Then the famous ebi and the gradual push for Irish breed Crosses ( cos you couldn't call them British Friesian or holstien ) but yes teagasc was up to there nuts in Jersey in the beginning.
Re greenfield I don't know what was the management role. But teagasc were there as a minimum in ab advisory roll .
If beef breeding and consideration is to be a thing in Irish dairy then the carbon score in the ebi would have to go.
The way it's worked is that's the Jersey score the icbf and farmers with Jersey on the boards managed to wangle in for their own favour and legitimacy.
Sexed semen is the present the ai companies wanted.
If everyone went to the likes of Montbeliarde and stock bulls, there'd be some hooping and holering from those making their living off dairy farmers.
Very basic question: how important is genetics (which is the reason given for pushing AI use) compared to management of the cow and her diet? I saw this image from a book on the cow-signals website and your comment re stock bulls and keeping things simple came to mind.

Here is a link to one of Michael Murphy's interviews with IFJ promoting Jersey crossbreds.

Here is another one. He didn't allow for the "Green" nutters.

The first line of that article is depressing
6 years later, still at the same point.
Wonder if his vision will be questioned at this years 'Everything is Awesome' conference?
Or will they just blame the green nutters for ruining their fun?
Point taken he loves Jersey breeding and the sound of his own voice in equal measure. He's an analyst......that translates to a spoofer he's working the same lines and bullcrap as every other analyst..... the will be right some of the time
They'll change their tune slightly blame the greens a bit blame wars a bit etc etc un forseen circumstances 😉 ......the markets are very volatile at the moment is a good one usually
It's amazing how short memories are. The reason jex was jumped at was in the 90 s infertility was the big issue. It wasn't uncommon to have 20 %+ infertility in fr herds and back then you had the beef men bitching about the holstein influence.the issue to be.fair.has largely been dealt with fr so 5he need for je x.has somewhat reseeded.
I’ve always considered the farmers journal just an extension of Teagasc and all I see them pushing since 2015 is jersey breeding, more of them and expanding no matter what. Articles with lads with 2 and 3 units etc. Teagasc are great to advise and then walk away from it afterwards.
How can they be left in the mart? Haven't they tags.on them
Why did you not give the price for each year in between.I presume you are a dairy farmer so not surprising.
If lads are honest still lots of herds with 15/20% empty …..masked up by planned culls etc etc there’s zero need to go jex route to improve things ….enough variety in black and white if u look past headline ebi figures
Most of those calves ended up in rathkeale for procesing …..this avenue is now largely shut down
