Is Ireland becoming a Woke Society? Are people too scared to say anything as it may offend…..
Are we too tolerant and easily lead?
They’ve recently transitioned and I still haven’t got used to it.
He changed gender twice in a week, hard to keep up lol
How do you make that out? I honestly can’t believe you can be this thick
He is a trans man.
He is too young for a phone. I agree. But other parents at school aren’t this sensible.
I am that thick thanks :) lol
Was a joke, your very sensitive..
Actaully how did you misgender them? What were you saying at the time - him / her / ??
So two people you know have transitioned of late ?
do I have that correct?
Based on my reading of it, you've got it entirely wrong. One individual, he misgendered them twice by accident, it was no biggy.
Jesus. Is this the petty level you want to take it to.
“they” can be used singular and plural. It has always been this way.
if he’s a he, how else would I misgender them?
Exactly. He didn’t freak out, he didn’t terminate our friendship, her barely even blinked. He knows I accept him and am trying my best.
The same reaction the vast majority of trans people would have
You said that two people you know recently transitioned?
I just want to be sure I read it correctly?
I rarely use "they" in the singular. It goes against my own thinking when it comes to the English language. It just sounds grammatically incorrect in most instances. I usually say "he/she" or "him/her" and I identify by a person's sex, rather than an individual's opinion on his/her gender. I could argue that people should respect my method of thinking but some people are just not open enough to accept others way of thinking.
I do make the error of using they and them in the singular form every now and then but like everyone in the world, I'm not perfect. We all make mistakes.
You entirely misread it and I'm guessing you were gonna get annoyed about the number of transgender people or something.
It hasn't happened yet so hence my complete confidence that the woke agenda is pure hysteria from the hard right .
no I didn’t.
I use “they” as a singular all the time. It’s most certainly not grammatically incorrect.
It all just harps back to one simple thing: Humans don't like harmony and peace and everything rosy near as much as aggro and disagreement and hostility.
I’d say there’s also an element, among the middle aged (and older), of ‘I didn’t get to live my life how I wanted and you shouldn’t either!’.
What a strange thing to say
How do you not realise that it was a joke?
If it was a joke, fine. But it really wasn’t funny
So if you use “they” as a singular all the time, do you expect people on the other side of the gender ideology debate to follow suit without questions?
I don’t expect to do anyone to do anything. I was merely clarifying a point. I also don’t believe this is an ideological debate.
..,
And I too was also looking for clarity on a point. Not to worry. Life goes on.
Some of the comments here are an eye opener! 👀
Something in common so Brian? Regards the masters. Although I can hardly count or remember vhdl.
Actually I'm reporting you! I agree with you again. Trust is absolutely key. I'm mid forties and wouldn't trust myself with a free gaff. The baby of the family, yes(getting a skip next week and apparently I'm not allowed wrap them in cling film and use it. Stupid mammies.)
What's "woke". Those using the word seem to have a variety of different interpretations. I looked it up and found it was an African word that has evolved a few times with its use in social media.
Would I be correct in assuming it now replaces the phrase "politically correct"?
If that's the case, shouldn't someone tell those that use it?
I've no idea! I imagine you're correct. My idea of woke is the politically correct crowd, arts degree, expensive coffee and most importantly...too much time on their hands. Get a job and stop going to rallys.
Woke is an African American term used by people in protest movements to mean stay awake to potential threats.
The hard right has misappropriated it to mean anything they dislike. As such it's functional meaningless at this stage.
