Here is a scathing review from a "Dubliner" (according to his X (formerly Twitter) profile) sneering at two honest, hard-working comedians from down the country.

I'm not a fan of the 2 Johnnies, or Pat Shortt, or the Hardy Bucks, but what is it about the so-called metropolitan broadsheet newspaper reviewers from the Capital who love sneering at what the "culchie" enjoys? It's similar to how RTE's output is dominated by the tastes of the South County Dublin demographic, except for Nationwide and Winning Streak.

Turf, country music, RIP.ie (a valuable resource for the rural-based elderly) are all also fodder for contempuous remarks by these big shots down in Dublin. Where does this superiority complex come from? Why do they think they're better than us?

RTE's output appears to be dominated by the Two Johnnies and Anna Geary, punctuated every few weeks by yet another Late Late Show Country Music special.

Why do they think they're better than us?

Dublin people think we're better than country people because country people like the Two Johnnies.

If it makes you feel better, you can look down your nose at any Dubs who still enjoy Mrs Brown's Boys.

Avoiding RTE is wonderful in that you can live your life without knowing who people like the 2 Johnnies are. I'm a Dub anyway so I'll just presume they are beneath me and I'm better than them and far a more sophisticated being.

Coldplay's early 2000s power ballads are very popular amongst country men of a certain age. Sad to say it but in a buttoned up society where expressing your emotions are taboo, sometimes to only way to "let it all out" is to belt along with Yellow as you're driving along.

Despite living under the tyranny of those restrictions, these are the men who Irish society scorn.

I'm very sorry, I don't like the Two Johnnies or some of the other things mentioned. Can someone please inform me how I can be a proper Irish person rather than a horrible Dublin metro elite snob. Is there deprogramming? Hypnotherapy? Perhaps I can just spend the rest of my life pretending to like things I don't.

The problems all the more serious because I don't even come from Dublin! Please help.

On reflection there is some pretty strong elitism in the responses to the OP. And I agree about RIP.ie. If live somewhere where the sense of community is still strong enough that people care whether their neighbors are dead are not, that's a good thing. It's stupid to sneer at that.

But we are all allowed to not like things that people in rural Ireland (or a caricature) do, and even say so if we like. Those people may just need thicker skin.

I’m not a fan of them either but the outright sneering at anyone whose tastes don’t align with the typical stuff that comes out of the Dublin metropolitan area from that article is unreal.

If it was David McSavage or Brendan O Carroll in a wig going on about the Northsiders vs the Southsiders over and over again he would be praised to high heaven by our “national” papers.

I think the 2 Johnnie’s are great craic and are complete and utter mad bastards.

I like the podcast most of all because they can be themselves and they have magnificent support with Neil and Maura.

I seriously think the 2 Johnnie’s have a very important role to play in our society - they are the pallbearers of the mad culture that exists in Ireland.

Only simple country people like myself know how important this task is.

I believe in the fullness of time their podcasts will become part of the leaving cert curriculum.

My generation had to put up with Peig but my grandchildren and their grandchildren will be studying the 2 Johnnie’s for the LC in years to come.
