When the Macroom bypass and the Dunkettle is finish, I believe you'll be able to travel from Killarney to Cork to Dublin without stopping as there will be no traffic lights ☺
And the views especially West is fab ☺
And the only shops on the route will be Glenflesk and Lissarda. The Healy Raes will be in Dublin in no time.
That's true!
Two fantastic shops also. Fantastic deli in Lissarda.
Lissarda could do better. Seems to use the cheapest deli range available and the coffee is quite poor. However if you want a good lunch go across the road to Mai Fytz's pub.
Mai Fitz is always rammed, looks like a good spot.
I don't think though that Killarney - Dublin without stopping is the best way to put it though... there will still be level crossing lights for the rail, and aren't there a set (or two) of pedestrian lights floating around as well?
In any case, its not Killarney - Dublin, its actually Killarney - Hillsborough roundabout, which is even more impressive.
Opening of the final section pushed back to early November
"a small 500m section of the new bypass would be opened this week on the western side of Baile Mhúirne village to allow motorists coming from the Kerry side access a new slip road which would bring them into the village."
There is a level crossing, though, so if you time out wrong, you'll be stopped there.
Don't be surprised if you are stopped at Togher queuing 8km for the Jack Lunch Tunnel though.
Should be ok once Dunkettle is done.
Very doubtful traffic will flow freely even when the junction is complete, from what I've seen.
You're right, never thought of the level crossing
O'Briens Glenflesk could do well out of this if they play the game right...last time there I asked the lady for wifi and there was none, so get in fibre, Frank and Honest coffee and sorted :)
Confirmed by Michael Creed to be opening Monday 6th November. We're almost there!
My days of driving through Ballyvourney are almost over, I imagine I'll rarely see the place any more. You've got to wonder how badly it'll affect places like the Mills and the Abbey?
Great news. The wait is finally nearly over.
To be fair, the Mills/Ballyvourney have many things in their favour
If/when the Killarney-Farranfore upgrade goes ahead their hand will be even more enhanced.
I suppose I was worried that anyone wanting to eat might just push on and go straight to their destination rather than having to get on/off the road again, but as you say it'll be pretty easily accessible, so hopefully it won't be an issue.
The Mills is only 3 minutes from the Junction with the old N22, as said it will still be handy for a break in the journey to get a bit of decent food.
Am I right in saying the western tie-in which is due to open shortly, only allows traffic to join it going westbound from ballyvourney and can only leave it if heading eastbound?
Therefore, if travelling from Cork to killarney, and want to visit the Mills, you need to exit at ballymakeera?
Sure at least the traffic will be greatly reduced. Grab a coffee while you're there.
Oh absolutely, it's well worth the stop as it is, great food and atmosphere
My understanding is that you can go into Ballyvourney from this junction and when you are exiting from Ballyvourney you can only go west bound for Killarnery. If you are travelling to Cork you will join the bypass from the Ballymakeera side.
Yes.
Ballymakeera/Toonlane exit has all 4 movements.
At Slievereagh west of Ballyvourney, you can only exit the bypass coming from Killarney or access the bypass heading for Killarney. You can't exit coming from Cork or join the road towards Cork.
I hate how in this country we go for these limited access junctions all over the place. Full access here would be very beneficial for those living towards the west of Ballyvourney.
The same can be said about the M7/M8 and M7/M9 junctions. Just stupid.
Google Maps is in a weird pending state wrt the new road. It has prematurely relabelled the existing N22 as the R618 and shows no N22 at all from one side of Ballyvourney to the other:
Drove it last weekend and it hadn’t a clue, it was trying to send me off at every junction 😅
This is very poorly designed due to penny pinching. Chaotic and unsafe 'sliproads' of such divergent standards, no hard shoulder, no concrete barrier median...etc. Not a standard to be repeated.
You see this second rate stuff in the north recently where they are crippled with finance. No such excuse here.
Disappointing.
Those slips are dodgy alright, not very happy with them myself.
It’s not a motorway so there is no requirement for a concrete barrier.
have a look at the recent works in Sligo and mayo. This design is the same.
i honestly think a single carriageway would have done the job, it’s not that busy outside of peak times. A single carriageway would have had hard shoulders/different junction layouts etc also.
Two lanes are important for slow loads. Will hold off any full judgement until I see the finished product.
