I spent several years living and working in Afghanistan, and what I posted is my own personal experience and view, nothing more. If the Brits or anyone else share it ( or not) that's their right. and I could not care less.. I saw what life was like for Afghans under the horrors of the Taliban, and the vast improvements to their life's under the US. Now my Afghan friends ( who I'm still in frequent contact with ) tell me that with the return of the Taliban, the strangulation of Afghan people has begun again.
As for winning battles, seems to me that winning the battles of the 1st and 2nd world wars culminated in the outright winning of both wars, and the US played a major part in both of these wars.
And as for the treaty, that was engineered by Trump as an election ploy, and was a big mistake in my opinion. Just how do you think the Taliban survived in the wilderness for 20 years? They were nourished and kept alive by their original Creators, Pakistan. Who used them as a proxy Government back then, and will use them even more so now, to control Afghanistan. But there's one fly in the Pakistani ointment...No one saw the collapse of the Afghanistan National Army, and to make matters even worse, an army equipped with the most modern weapons, helicopters, artillery drones etc. all now in the hands of the Taliban. And guess what? Pashtun's make up the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan and 18% of the Pakistani population are ethnic Pashtun...Now Islamabad need to tread very carefully in matters Afghan. Political will and Public opinion back home is what stops the US from winning these wars. If they stayed in Vietnam for another few years they could have held on and occupied the south they actually never went near North Vietnam bar bombing supply lines. But there wasn’t a snowballs chance in hell of staying in Vietnam with the political and public atmosphere on the home front in the early 70’s. Afghanistan had long long disappeared from the news cycle for well over a decade by the time trump pulled the plug on it. There was nothing to be gained anymore by staying there. Kennedy was able to make hay in Berlin in the early 60’s 20 years after the war and Reagan likewise 20 years later so staying in Europe was a No brainer. Even though they were bluffing about West Berlin and would have abandoned it to avoid war.
Yes, very true. I'm always a bit skeptical of posters who blame the big bad ol U S of A for all the wrongs in the world, to the exclusion of any others. For sure, the US made mistakes, that's a given, but I'm also convinced that there's far worse country's than the US out there, and without the US, we would find out to our great regret just how bad they are. Here in the west, for all its faults, we live privileged lives.

It feels like we've been getting occasional stories of AFU crossing the Dnieper for the last few months, which have either just been probing or misdirection, given that we never heard about them again. As ever, we live in hope of a substantial Ukrainian breakthrough somewhere along the front line. I have to think, however, that if the AFU does break through somewhere, they will be doing their best to keep an intelligence blackout on it until its unstoppable.
