The very one who is exporting loads of LNG to Europe. What do you suggest banning flights and energy again. Why not shut down Aljazeera also for good measure.

And people wonder why Israel want to block al Jazeera

Don't know yet. Do you? 24x7 vigilance, this time they failed badly. Hopefully enough to finally bring down Netanyahu and his right-wing loony coalition.

A pragmatic approach that might have prevented the economic shocks of last year. May as well take the gas from the Russians.

This is sarcasm before anyone has a go

No I don't know. I just find it to be a very bizarre contradiction of the "we have a right to defend ourselves" policy. The right to defend themselves existed on October 7th and before hand.

It's being called an intelligence failure. However if there is an existential threat to Israel from Hamas an intelligence failure shouldn't result in the border being porous. 24/7 vigilance required like you said.

As soon as Biden spoke about providing for Israel's future security it looked like de-escalation was on the cards

What the plan now. Israel keep bombing and making life hell for civilians but no invasion pending release of all hostages

Netanyahu can't walk away from this without securing releases

I don't have the answers to fix the middle east, obviously, but can anyone tell me - this revenge Israel is taking and will take, and inflict on all those in their path be they Hamas or not, why is there any thought that it will work this time when it has never worked before?

Is it just vengeance for vengeance sake it is it with a view to actually finding a solution?

Of course you want blood when your own have been attacked, and this is generally why those who are the victims of crime are not allowed to be judge and jury of the perpetrators.

The cycle of violence will not be broken until a new way is found. What is the new way? Not sure, but the old way has never worked and I think it is high time a different approach was taken.

I won't go into conspiracy theories on why this is potentially quite advantages for Bibi given what was happening prior to the attack on 7th October, but at some point cooler heads have got to prevail. I don't think he has the temperament to be the man for that job, is there any possibility that once he is finally gotten rid of that someone more in the mold of Yitzhak Rabin could rise to power?

Israel would love to shut down all unbiased journalism like al Jazeera news so they could spread more lies and propaganda.

Rightly or wrongly Israel has always tried to gain retribution against those that attack. It is probably incorrect to say it has not worked.

When it originally gained independence it was surrounded by states attacking it mainly Jordan, Egypt and Syria. However it's mainly at peace with two of these now and Syria is still in the throes if a a civil war. It's main security concern now is Gaze and Iran.

Is Israel looking for revenge or is it trying to eliminate an enemy mainly HAMAS. Israel thinking rightly or wrongly is if it does not carry out retribution against HAMAS that HAMAS will be emboldened and repeat what it did on October 7th. It probably also considers that no matter what it dose it will be hated.

It's one thing to be hated and feared, Israel feels if it was just hated and not feared it will be attacked continually. It was Moshe Dyan that expressed to Israel that they the Israeli could do nothing about Arabs hating them it had to be an acceptable fact it was from this the ''mow the grass'' terminology came from

You are missing a bit there. Al Jazeera was caught few times inflating figures..

And it's oriented to........ you can add up whatever you want in there.

Unbiased journalism won't fit there tho. Not that I would blame them at the same time.

Edit: just to say, that picture in your post, read it and think about it, if you'll manage that you are the winner!😉

I wouldn't consider Al Jazeera unbiased but they do generally have good reporting and coverage. I can definitely see a pro Palestine angle in their reporting but I wouldn't consider any of it fake news by any means.

Channel 4 news, as usual, has been doing a great job of reporting.

Well, they're run by Qatar and Mediabias has them somewhat in the middle. Their 'investigations' and editorializing is definitely pro-Palestinian and doubtless dictated by Qatar. Sometimes they're caught out for making things up, not as bad as many sites though.

Channel 4 News, followed by the BBC for me. BBC Verify good for fact checking as well.

You can wrap a car around a tree in a car crash. They’re tougher than the average human flesh, brain, guts etc. A tree surviving a blast isn’t evidence a human can survive the same blast.

Because fake news was only invented in 2015, the parable of David and Goliath must be completely accurate history?

The great thing is, smart folks will read from more than one resource (as you do and plenty others here), Al Jazeera included for me, BBC, channel 4 as you say, sky news, myself I read some news channels from my home country as well. I'd say all those channels are biased someway, of course.

Edit: Forgot to add (as I usually do in my posts, apologies, working stupid hours, so when it comes to little time off I have, I have a few whiskeys in 😉), smart folks usually read, sit back and think and read more etc. And after all that form an opinion. I'm kind of missing that kind of approach on this thread. Not pointed at you! Just saying.

And heavily supported the takedown of Qaddafi. And, uhh, bribed their way into the World Cup including threatening voters. And built their lux stadia on the backs of imported Nepalese workers. And do send a lot of money into Gaza, some of which ends up as humanitarian aid.

So compared to the other parties involved Qatar is winning at hostage rescue. Probably people shouldn’t be calling for their ostracizing, they’re an important diplomatic partner to the West. Also the trusted third party for holding frozen Iranian assets.

looks like more and more countries are calling for the readoption of the two state solution .. perhaps jordan could cede some land to help resolve the seemingly intractable issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,683 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Or Israel could withdraw from the illegal settlements.

"From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free", is the chant from the protesters in London right now.

That's advocating for genocide and the destruction of a UN member state.

    These people are vile.

Not everybody who says that means anything at all to do with genocide. I know how it has been adopted but being free and murdering everyone around you quite often don't mean the exact same thing it may surprise you to learn.

Given its catchy nature it is a popular chant but I can assure you the vast majority of those who chant it don't have the eradication of the Jewish people on their mind.

Free Palestine does not mean anti Jew. Supporting Palestinian human rights doesn't mean you support Hamas.

Some people take phrases, sayings, writings etc and twist them to use them for their own ends. The world is a bit mad like that I suppose.

    Tldr

    Free Palestine ≠ destroy Israel.

Al Jazeera are actually quite decent but when it comes to this the bias is firm.

They had lad on the other night trying to explain Hamas actions by saying they were just targeting military but because they didn't come up against any resistance they got carried away. He wasn't challenged.

I audibly shouted "Ah fúck off at the telly".

That said I would take it every day of the week over the executions of journalists by the Israeli regime.

Would echo this, Al Jazeera is a pretty decent outlet but none of them are free from bias.

And do send a lot of money into Gaza, some of which ends up as humanitarian aid.

Which is encouraged by the Israeli regime.

Rule of thumb is most of the Qatari aid goes to the Palestinians and the Iran "aid" goes to Hamas.

Oh ho yes, Qatar is far from faultless, regardless they are an important diplomatic state in the middle east. It must be acting **** half the time (by our western perspective) must be why they get on so well with folks we don't.

Excellent infotainment on it, DYK pretty much everyone has a base for their militaries there?:
