People always making gags about the do-not-operate-heavy-machinery warnings on medicine, and never realizing that it's mostly referring, very obliquely, to driving.
Cyclist injured in collision after breaking red light secures €190,000 settlement
This doesn't do any favours to cyclists, will fire up the angry drivers.
Maybe I'm just thick (although it has been a long day), but can I assume from the fact that the cyclist was found 80% negligent, and was still awarded €190,000, that if he had been found not negligent at all, he would have been awarded €950,00?
And how do they decide on such percentages?
I'd imagine the 80% was the important bit to insurance company rather than the 190k
Similar case, but driver found liable for hitting motorist despite having a green light.

Thats a strange one alright, a very high compensation considering the % of blame. I was going to say it would get reduced on appeal but it looks like it was an agreed upon sum between the parties
Ms Justice Leonie Reynolds noted the settlement. She congratulated both sides on the excellent outcome, which she said she had no hesitation in approving.
What a strange comment by the judge. Congratulations are hardly in order.
Speaking of court cases...
When I read it I presumed she is referring to the process of mediation that led to the settlement - i.e the Solicitors did not drag it out and cream fee's for years I'm guessing?
Pretty much, a huge chunk of change that no one was going to sniff at but also the apportion of blame and its acceptance means he can't come back in a few years with other issues. I don't agree with the settlement but solicitors know that even if the cyclist ran the red, the taxi driver would still have to be driving in a manner that he could scrub most of not all of his speed if a pedestrian ran out. They probably figured that with the number of people around, his speed, even if under the limit was a minor contributory factor. And yes, the fact that they weren't tying up the courts on a gamble it would go one way or another is always appreciated. It does not mean that he would have gotten 950k if he was not at fault. It also does not mean the cyclist was not more to blame either.
that is the wording used whenever there is a settlement, nothing strange about it
we dont know the exact details of the case how they were hit etc, but in reality the cyclist is most likely 100% at fault, if it was a car on car?
The argument you are supposed to drive in a way that can avoid all accidents is well plainly impossible
Presuming the injuries are as described, 190k isn't a pot to piss in, so pretty tragic
But settlements are not done based on fairness of outcome but on minimizing the amount paid
you never know how a judge will act as we have all seen
so the prudent thing is to not risk 1 million when you can guarantee 200k
Bugger. I happened to come across the Times link on Facebook and it seems the usual idiots have come out of the woodwork...
New Michael Collins statue, never realised he thought he owned the roads and didn't even pay road tax!
No helmet or hi viz FFS!
...
Good use of resources.
I do admire the fact that he admitted what many would see as a worse insult that what the Garda claimed. But yeah, little to be at, if a fine was needed, 140 for disorderly conduct would have sorted it, a day in court, and the fact he apologised, is just stupid beyond belief.
Another driverless car is involved in a collision where someone on a bicycle is killed, this time a woman in her 70s ☹
Sad times, great bikes
Great bikes very pricey though.
If Covid Times was the cycling world's Celtic Tiger, it seems as though we're currently in The Crash circa 2009.
A lot of what we're hearing about must be significantly brexit related? I know Shimano reported a sales drop, but on the UK sites that seems to be angled as an "anything but brexit" excuse? It's often easier and clearer to get stuff from China than the UK, where at least they have the customs handling on point at this stage!
The price of bikes rocketed due to COVID, increase in usage, sales etc. But it can't sustain those levels for ever. Any manufacturer with tight margins on a premium product needs to rethink their model going forward.
Just had a look on Isla bikes website & from what I can make out, they charge regular UK price to non-UK buyers, with a note saying its buyer’s responsibility to take of vat and import duty. It’s not clear if the UK vat is deducted or not.
It’s understandable for a smaller company why they might do it that way but it’s very unattractive for an overseas buyer (even if the UK vat is deducted) as its more complex and there is some uncertainty on final cost.
Great bikes and shame to see them go but hard to believe that Brexit isn’t a large part of reason for it.
I know its newstalk but still worth a listen
Cyclists are better people than drivers....
I wonder should I read the comments?
I wouldn't bother. It pretty quickly descends into American politics/MAGA territory. Like an American version of journal.ie comments, I suppose
'there’s a desperate need for a overarching road safety strategy, rather than the current ‘piece-meal’ approach'
