I'm a big fan of freesat stbs, the problem is... He wont be able to use it.
He can barely use what he has.
Try a Sky HD box? Its possible to reprogram the remote that works the older SD boxes to work a HD box. If he’s used to the remote he uses now, it would be easier for him.
Source for the press release or article that DTT in the UK, either just by the BBC or the Freeview platform as a whole "...will switch over from DVB-T to DVB-T2 in 2023"?
The use of some Freeview Play certified devices to place HD channels into where the SD simulcasts would usually appear relies on device firmware & doesn't affect directly the LCNs transmitted on the UK DTT Multiplexes.
The following are now apparently now visible at 11.426H.
I still have a bush SD freesat box knocking around - worked last time I used it!
Only disadvantage is recording - in our house I'd regularly record in SD (especially if it's not for me 😀 )

Freesat channel 799 launched today too
That's great news that all BBC channels will be now in HD .I would if this why that ITV made there HD channels FTA .I do watch Alba Diy with Donnie .🙂
These days HD should be regarded as the norm for any proper broadcaster.
Meanwhile we're still stuck with Legovision on most Saorview channels with no change in sight.
Yes , 1080i is or should now be the new "SD" or standard definition and only UHD or higher should be given the term HD.
Its been like this since 1936 believe it or not ....
and of course , to be clear , terms like HD "only" refer to TV and not any title made to be shown in the cinema on a large screen , as all of these have a native equivalent resolution when scanned properly , that is far in excess of anything made for TV at any time.
Yes, a channel popped up on Freeview for me last night called the "BBC Information Channel". Told me my equipment was ok for HD and I didn't have to do anything.
Any reason why the BBC SD services are remaining on Freeview (for now)? Surely the number of SD only boxes would be as small as the amount of remaining satellite SD only STBs?
A change to full Freeview HD will require viewers to have DVB-T2 TVs and STBs, this will have to be taken in consideration in any transition to HD.
Likely no change will happen until the outcome of WRC-23 is know with regards to the UHF broadcasting band. This will have to be followed by an ofcom consultation.
True. I wonder what the current ratio is for T2 MPEG4 TVs/STBs versus DVBT MPEG2 in the UK.
I still have a few TVs here, more than 10 years old, working happily in various rooms, that I assume are basic DVB-T.
If this is similar in the UK there is probably a lot of second, third TVs that will have to be upgraded.
Thats true. I have a 2008 32" Sony TV thats DVBT/MPEG4 capable and its still going strong. Actually better sound out of it compared to its thinner lighter follow ons.
BBC have announced that Monday 8th January will be the date for SD closure

Official website
ITV has announced that it will close its SD UTV service, along with other regions, in January 24, it is reckoned that up to 98% of viewers have already moved to HD so the numbers affected should be low.
Here's hoping that this move from BBC/ITV will prompt the remaining FTA/Freesat channels to finally ditch SD or at least switch to better quality MPEG4 encoding.
The BBC have also put up their revised switch-off date for their SD channels for 8th January on the BBC website.
ITV did also say in a press release yesterday that ITV1 Border Scotland and ITV1 Channel (Islands) will go HD on Sky & Freesat next month. Test transmissions for those two versions of ITV1 HD will begin shortly.
