Australia Rejects Recognition of Aboriginals - For Shame

Very sad outcome on the referendum to recognise the right of Australia’s aboriginal people - a people completely mistreated and subjugated since the prison convicts arrived on the ships from England 230 years ago. This was not a vote on giving the indigenous Australians any sort of special status, just a means to begin a healing of the historic injustices meted out to them over the decades.

Shame on you, Australia. When I was over there for a month back in 2000 I have to say I found so many Aussies to be shockingly racist and intolerant of racial minorities, with the native Aboriginals viewed by many as little better then animals. Vile attitudes coming from supposedly urbane, educated people that frankly disgusted and shocked me in how so many were in no way shy of expressing their naked racism.

My late father had even stronger views about Aussies from his visits there - uncouth, ignorant, intolerant, boorish and loud were his terms to describe them.

Anyone else disappointed - or surprised - at the referendum result where Australians do not consider their own oppressed native peoples in any way equal and deserving of being treated with dignity and respect?

For shame, Australia, for shame. 😥😡

We might see Travellers as native Irish but there is also view that they are second class citizens who dont deserve equal treatment. While treatment of aboriginals was worse, for the most part Irish people have no respect for Travellers and the idea that Irish people are disgusted with how vote went is a bit ironic.

I'd agree on the Irsrael treatment of Palestinians. It's clear Israel view Palestinians as subhuman and not deserving of human rights or even existing at this stage.

There is a sizeable portion of people, especially in rural ireland, who do care if your background is black, brown, a traveller or Muslim.

They are actually.

Formal treaties where signed by the British and the Maori back in the 1800 that gave Maori certain rights.

Now the British/Whites/Europeans whatever you want to call them certainly came out on top in those treaties but there was at least some recognition of Maori culture.

In NZ you see far more Maori cultural far more integrated.

When you go from Aus to NZ it's chalk and cheese the way the indigenous people are viewed and treated.

You have to understand that a large number of progressives have a child like understanding of the world which involves no nuance

they view everything through the oppressor/ victim narrative so they need not know a thing about the details of the Australian referendum, they reactively conclude the majority are bad for voting how they did

This is as farcical a thread as you could get.

The OP was in Australia for a month 23 years ago and thinks he has some kind of insight into why this referendum failed.

Here’s a tip that most people do know but a surprisingly large number don’t. People don’t understand the politics of countries they don’t live in or come from. You can read about them on the internet, watch Sky News, but you will not develop a real understanding, you can only ever hope to recycle other people’s opinions.

Most people in ireland don’t mind or care what background people are from but in rural ireland in particular people have suffered horrifically at the hands of traveller burglary gangs , throw in all the other travellers behaviours like traveller feuds all over the country , refusing to work , wanting everything for free , destroying the towns they live in with intimidation of non travellers and flooding those towns with drugs in recent years etc etc etc

No. I'm saying that there have been lesser known, basically less famous, massacres and land-stealing of indigenous peoples in other parts of the world past and present.

What do these people get for their troubles?

No one in Ireland knows or cares if you are a pygmy who had their land stolen by Bantu-speaking farming peoples. That's tough luck and it must be a lonely life for a persecuted minority in a country with no local equivalent of colonial guilt (with recompense) and no appeal to white Westerners to intervene, even if only rhetorically.

I lived in australia for 20 years from 1974, have family still living there and still travel there, but not so regularly as my ma would like!!

White Australians are incredibly racist. Even until the 1970’s aboriginal children were still removed from their families to be ‘westernised’ with white Australians.

Aboriginals are not the only people to be discriminated by the Aussies over time; Vietnamese, Italian and Greeks to name a few. Aboriginals were always treated as second class, herded into reservations and lost their traditional ways. Now they rely on social welfare and alcohol, a sad way to treat one of the oldest indigenous people in the world.

All that referendum asked was for aboriginals and Torres Strait islanders be able to advise government on matters relating to them - no them and us, just advice - a bit like a lot of spin doctors used in our political system by interested parties.

Shame on Australia, the lucky country my arse
