It was in the EPG listings for today, don't know if they did more than that .
Yeah there he is.. Personally I'd take another hour of ABC to XTC rather than 2 hours of Dave, but that's just me.
Same here. The show is billed as being "live" and Fanning does make reference to time as in "here till 8 O'clock" but I don't think the show is live. I don't really like Fanning as a presenter tbh and hate when he tends to go on but his links are very brief and they sound kind of engineered in the same way that the Ronan Collins slot sounds. I accept so far he's only just done one slot but again I think ABC to XTC is a super program.
There's no need to shoehorn Dave in there.
He's a spent force.
ABC to XTC is a great show.
there's a new programme The Live Vault with John Daly on Sunday evenings 6pm
I see that now, there's 2 episodes up on playback
Episode 1 features music from Imelda May & Marc Almond, Dolores O'Riordan and Sinead O'Connor.
Episode 2
Caught a bit of this while making the dinner last week. Very enjoyable. Great to hear a short interview with John Prine as well.
I'll be listening back to these I'd say. Bit like Gold Lounge, the time doesn't quite suit, but worth listening to for sure.
do they really need to bring in an outside presenter for a new show ? especially that they are cutting costs throughout RTE.
there are plenty of RTE staff radio presenters who could easily present a show like this.
Probably voluntary? Maybe I'm being a bit naive here but they could have produced these programmes before any of the payments controversies broke out. I think this programme may only run for a couple of weeks. IIRC RTE Gold ran a niche specialised programme temporarily last year Sundays 6-7pm.
That Sunday night programme will be funded by the special sound and vision fund from the BAI
I see you can listen back to the weekly classic countdown with Will Leahy ,
RTE for all their faults have really bullt up a top drawer service with rte gold just a pity it can not be received on f.m.
I often use the RTE Player to catch up with the latest edition of ABC to XTC, because I cannot always manage to hear of all it from 5pm to 6pm on Saturdays. For example, I missed the first 20 minutes this evening!
have had the opportunity to listen to Ronan Collins for the last few weeks at different days. Overall its a nice mix of music but its minimum effort put in by him to record the links. Probably no more than 20minutes I would say per day.
Interesting to know what RTÉ Gold DJ’s earn. So how much does Ronan get for 100 minutes work a week?
Id say it is 5 times what presenters earn on independent stations?
I don't really consider Ronan Collins as being a full-time RTE Gold presenter as let's say Will Leahy or Rick O'Shea. I think most of Gold's weekend programming is provided voluntarily. Speaking of Ronan Collins, I'm not too sure if he is a direct employee or a contractor. That probably leaves Aidan Leonard, Michael Cahill and a couple of people that are behind the scenes involved in running the stations automation which I would say does not comprise of many. I don't think the folks involved with Gold are on big salaries and if anyone is they were on those levels of pay before they were deployed to RTE Gold.
Considering any faults that RTE Gold may have generally, I still believe it's one of the things that RTE got right. Radio stations carrying similar formats around the country are poor imitations IMO. And in fairness it's thanks to people such as John Clarke and Aidan Leonard.
Used to be 4 and a half staff running it - Aidan, Amanda, producer Truffles , Will & Rick. The rest were presumably freelancers paid by the hour I’d imagine.
Ronan must be a contractor or he would have had to go at 65/6 no?
The permanent RTE staff that are involved in presenting and/or producing RTE Gold are:
Aidan, Will, Rick, Amanda, Truffles (Eric Threlfall) and Michael Cahill. Sometimes Paul Moriarty and John Kenny fill in.
I don't think Ronan was ever Permanent with RTE, certainly not before he retired on Radio 1
I take it that Dave Fanning, John Daly and John Connolly are all on contract so.
I would imagine so - along with the other weekend presenters
It’s Michael Cahill still a producer on 2fm and that’s his main day job?
Ronans 71 today. And he’s celebrating it’s presumably by not being in a studio
yes the tracy clifford show
I would imagine he's on the golf course.
How much so does it cost RTÉ to run Gold?
How many Staffers?
How many on contract?
From what I am reading it is a viable low cost station..,I hope it is not affected by the expected cut backs?
Probably costs 400K a year ..imagine the commercial potential??
I would imagine it's on Kevin Backhurst hit list. I have mentioned this before but to close this service for demonstration purposes would be stupid. Yes, change is required in RTE but they need to implement significant cost savings. Closing digital particularly RTE Gold would hardly put a dent in things. He has hinted that there will be voluntary redundancies, a reduction in programming and no digital investment so that kind of spells it out for me.
I think there will be an announcement in the next few weeks...
Interesting mix in this weekend's Live Vault episode ... I especially liked the closing track - Sweet Little Mystery by John Martyn.

Yes yes great show..
Actually John Connolly’ is a good listen, as is Living in the 70’s
Great Radio and songs we seldom hear elsewhere
I could listen to Gold schedule all weekend, and sometimes almost do - but ABC to XTC and Live Vault would be ones I'd make a point to listen back to if I missed the live airing.
Correct on Ronan, as per this from RSVP when he moved to Gold:
Also, I’m not a staff member in RTÉ. I wasn’t looking forward to the gold watch and a big pension. I had my private arrangements. I wasn’t a wealthy man, but that didn’t matter. It was never about working for the money. It was about having something to do, and wanting to do it. Anyway those seeds were there for a few years but I really started to think about it at the beginning of 2022.
