A pit bull dog below in Wexford the latest episode of a child been savaged . Are these dogs suitable for pets .
PS The only people with Pitbulls or similar in our town are involved in drug dealing and or general criminality.

Rounding them up and putting them all to sleep would achieve a massive reduction in fatal dogs attacks.
Isn't that what we're trying to achieve?
Well, it's not what you're trying to achieve, but those of us who object to people having their throat ripped out, that's what we'd like.
Don't know if you saw my earlier post so I'll ask you here:
How would banning of a particular breed work? Is there scientific test, a genetic test maybe, that would determine the breed? What if the dog is a mongrel and is part one of the banned breeds? What would the percentage have to be for it not to be killed? Less than 50%, less than 20%, less than 5%? Or would any trace of the banned breed mean the dog must die?
It's very simple, use common sense : everyone know's what they look like, if in the opinion of a Superintendent they are Pit Bull type then they are put down.
Simple is right..

i think dont bother trying to reason with these people- abandon ship on this thread.
I’ve never been bitten by a human, all the videos are showing savage bull dogs attacking humans
Mate had a labrador boxer cross. Looked a lot like pitbull. Suppose that should have been killed on sight.
How sheltered is your life? I've been bitten by humans dozens of times 😁
Well Patrick2010 watch some different videos, there's plenty out there. Movies, Minecraft game play etc., or even better, how about to read a book.
One day you'll find girlfriend, or boyfriend and you'll get a nice bite.
All this DNA nonsense. No need, just the opinion of a dog warden. They will get it right most of the time. If there is some issue then the owner should pay for the DNA test.
I don't know, tbh, but plenty of other countries do it, so use their systems as a starting point.
Waiting until you have a perfect system figured out is, again, doing nothing.
I'm on a Facebook page on Raw Feeding & the number of young women that post who own one of these dogs is surprising. Not the usual scummy type at all, they have the misfortune to be fashionable. AUK Forum has a debate on them, & it was pointed out that a good few dogs are seen with hip dysplasia & they are prone to elbow problems, so are they in pain .
The UK Government will probably make a mess of things, I've seen that it must be muzzled in a public place & neutered; none of which would have helped the poor guy whose neighbour owned one, it blew through a wooden panel fence & killed his Bichon Frise.
I saw earlier on a well known on line dogs for sale site people asking €2500 for pups, no health checks of any kind, says it all. I would add, it is very difficult to separate fighting dogs, even small ones, to try with a dog that weighs as much as a human is impossible.
I'd say you won't get any answer to your question, apart from the usual kill on sight, round "them" up and kill, we all know the look of "them" etc.. Some people can be cruel, some can be clueless, some can be ignorant and some can be scared. The biggest problem, imo, is some people treat dogs as a "thing", which can be misused, dumped in the shelters, when it's no fun anymore or just simply ignored in many ways, intentionally, or just by mistake and then we all have to face the consequences, people being injured or killed by dogs, dogs being killed, tortured for no reason (not only dogs of course, just trying to stay on the topic).
Sometimes it feels like authorities are toothless and afraid to actually make a proper stand and target the problem. Instead we have the bans. Nothing achieved, but parts of "public" loves it..
When I get the dog, I have a companion for life and the dog has the same in me, doesn't matter the size, or weight. I'll provide my best and I get back unconditionally loyal loving creature.
It really pisses me off seeing posts here calling for killing this and that because of inability of some to keep a pet. Pisses me off when fooked up breeders do the stupid shìt for profit. Will I change anything, I guess I won't. I'll care about my dogs as much as I can, they'll do the same for me and thats all what matters.
And apologies for using your post for my personal wall of text. My bad
From your link:
"Enforcement of generic, non-breed-specific dangerous dog laws"
Another endorsement of my view that large dogs should be banned in urban areas.
Seriously I don't get it.
Any update on your vision of neatly sorting out the problem?
Edit: Read the whole lot I would suggest, instead of posting or quoting one sentence.. Hope I'm being civil this time responding to your post.
Well yes, there are very few urban gardens suitable for a large dog. The difference between being attacked by a large dog versus being attacked by a small dog is the risk of death.
Better for people to ban large dogs in urban areas, better for the dog too as it is cruel and unfair to limit those dogs to a small garden and less than 3/4 hours walking.
I think you are missing a point, or mixing few things together with no whatever outcome you hope for.
Again size of your garden doesn't matter at the end of things.
I disagree, in general most larger dogs need more space. Many dogs should really only be kept where they have a lot of space and urban settings distress those dogs.
The evidence is clear, larger dogs are more dangerous, regardless of breed, because even if they bite less often, when they do, they create damage. Sure, there are certain large dog breeds I wouldn't want to see banned, but in order to meet your concerns about targeting certain breeds, the back-up option of targeting based on size, which can be empirically measured makes for a secondary option. You are not going to try and tell us that height and weight can't be assessed?
Well to be completely honest I don't know how to respond to this ..
Edit: Gonna give up, there's way too much of misinformation floating here. Bye ladies and gentlemen, it was pleasure till it wasn't.
Not a mod here. Inject every last one of them and ban them in the country. Simple as.
Guess you'll have to set up priorities. Inject every last one of them, or ban them. Can't do both at the same time buddy. Simple.
Edit: apologies, forgot I'm gone out of here. My bad.
You can inject the ones that are here and then ban the rest of them from entering. Feel that's a pretty straightforward post?
No worries mate. I appreciate your contributions here and the links you share. Very educational. Keep it up.
The funny thing about a lot of people who call for all these breeds to banned and "put to sleep" are probably also horrified by hunting.
Quite the opposite actually. Deer lack a natural predator and are damaging forests around the country as a result of large numbers. Hunting deer should be allowed to a greater extent. If it wasn't for the sheep, I would reintroduce wolves.
It is actually similar to the way that large dogs are kept in small urban spaces that are insufficient for their needs and should be banned.
Cheers. Quite a few members of my wife's family think these dogs should be banned/put to sleep but if I mention going rabbit or possum hunting back home, that's awful and cruel.
I get what you're saying about large dogs and small yards. I'd like to get a dog but our backyard is too small for a big dog so I'd need to walk it a couple of times a day. That's possible at the moment but if my work decided I had to go back to the office at all, it wouldn't be practical. So we don't have a dog.
Another case from the UK..
Amazing to think that this breed of pitbull is only 10 years in the UK and is already responsible for half of the fatal attacks on humans!
Howe can anyone argue against a ban and general cull?
this thread needs to be closed
Why?
Get a small dog, a miniature Schnauzer or something like that. Plenty of affection for the whole family, lively enough, but able to make do with a small garden.
Hunting should be allowed in situations where the natural predators of some species are gone. Think of it as filling the gap.
