I remember one of the complaints about body repairs on Tesla was due to the aluminium content of the car which requires special tooling compared to steel
It meant that repairs were more expensive because the shop has to recoup the costs of the extra equipment
Plus fewer shops would specialise in that type of repair, so less competition overall
I wonder if that's still the case with the Y
Very possible.
Believe it or not, a number of years ago I had trouble getting a PDR guy to remove a dent from a Leaf. They all just said no, don’t do EV’s.
Thats changed now somewhat so it just takes time and one person to have a go and then realise there’s nothing unusual in it.
Assuming this would have a knock on effect here. As many of the underwriters are house hold names in the irish market.
Pretty concerning tbh and it's probably mainly driven to limited repair centre capabilities. With I suspect a higher chance of full write off for traditionally repairable things. See for example the model Y front end cast aluminium and its issues.
VW beat Tesla on build quality. Not in the same league.
This one is used alot, have you sat un a new tesla and a similar priced vw yourself to back up ghat claim?
All been Musked....
Only if spoken from the blinkered eye of the VW drivers seat. I would class none of them as better than the other. Both have pros and cons.
I drove past a 212 ID.4 on Friday and one of its DRL’s wasn’t working…. Granted it was a taxi so could already have huge mileage, but surely a 2021 cars DRL’s shouldn’t be failing already…?
Define build quality?
Even the Germans know that Tesla is more reliable

Plenty of cars that aren't that old with dodgy DRLs (mainly seems to be Kia/Hyundai). Shouldn't happen given the supposed lifespan of LEDs but there's definitely a few cars out there with faulty lighting.
Loads alright, including Tesla model s with the facelift headlight. Nissan too on the quashqai face light headlight. Most with those diffused strips it seams.
But VW ID range also suffer from doors randomly opening while driving and not opening when unlocked and glass roof squeaking, there’s loads of build issues on most cars if you look hard enough.
Pity the other one wasn't out too... definitely the worst thing ever to be put on a car quickly followed by permanently lit dashboards.
As an ID.4 owner I'm forced to disagree. They're both fine from a build quality point of view
I think Diplomacy is your middle name.😁
Coming from an ID and now a Model 3 I would tend to agree with you..
The doors opening while driving is a strange one. Since they're not soft close or auto opening I didn't think there would be a way for them to open? Is it just a case of the latch not engaging and the door is just "loose"?
Door latch releases. Read the ID4 thread. Also on the FB Group.
Yay!! The Triumph Herald has made a comeback 😄
Yes I have actually owned a Tesla( dreadful car) now drive an etron.
Terrible experience with the Tesla that I owned, poor seats, they actually ripped, panel gaps, I could go on…… Non existent customer service.
I have owned VW’s in the past and whilst not perfect, they were a damn site better at resolving any issues that I did have.
You’re not allowed to criticise Tesla here though.
Congrats on the etron, hardly a like-for-like comparison to a Tesla though? Price v price?
👍👍
Everybody should buy a Tesla...😴
My condolences to you. I wasn’t aware you had to downgrade to an eTron. I think I’d rather the ID4 too.
Appears you can’t criticise VW either 🤷
Worst car I have ever owned was by some distance an Audi A4 1.8T. It had to be towed four times, total lemon, constant problems. Had a 4 cylinder diesel and that was also a pos, my 6 cylinder diesel A4 Avant was great though.
To be fair, Tesla customer service is ridiculously bad, but I do love my M3.
As I said in the above posts VW are not perfect either.
Etron is not perfect either but a definite upgrade in regards to quality materials inside and out.
Tesla customer service isn't the best, part of it is that they are too open with info for the ordering process. Any other brand would pick a date and either hitvit or miss it.
The service side seems good so far, pity Dublin is closed atm but it will be back by Nov ish.
Enjoy the etron
100% it is. No question there 🏎️
The saving grace is the ranger service.
If it was a €12k car Vs an E-tron then fair point, but a €40k plus car (more in 2020?) shouldn't have any build quality issues regardless of badge
Now it's fair to say there'll always be a few escapes, but the after sales service needs to be there to fix those issues
Was thinking that there are few etrons for 40k, the base price of a three.
Ofc , op might have had an S which would be more money and closer in spec and price.
Ripped seats sounds like a bad miss on QC at tesla.
A 2020 Tesla came from Fremont. They all come from Shanghai now and quality seems to be much higher. But the 2019,2020 versions are 4 times more reliable than an Octavia and 14 times more reliable than a Rav 4 according to ADAC
I have a US built Tesla M3 which were renowned for quality issues, unlike RHD models now made in China.
But all issues were fixed by Tesla without any bother under warranty over the last 2 years. Simply booked in the app and arrangements were made to have them sorted by mobile service at my place or else in the workshop if needed with a replacement car. Biggest issue was waiting for parts.
Never had such easy service from any other dealer for a new car.
