Does this look bad this far out?
It seems to me that this is a change of tack since Evelyn Cusack retired. No way would Evelyn have left it so late to call a proper wind warning. Remember it was the UK who also had to name it even though it was nearer to Ireland.
Surely a solid orange wind warning is required for the Southwest counties? Are they waiting until the event happens to ensure 100% accuracy
They are front the windy app I have premium
Its a new approach. its called retrospective forecasting. Cant be wrong. I think they are waiting until afternoon models.
Is it 4/5pm for the afternoon run?
UKMO and GFS. ECM 7-8pm. Thanks for the other answer.
Damned if they do and damned if they don't. They got a lot of flak for over egging storms (in some people's opinions) in the past.
FWIW I think UK Met were a bit quick off the mark on this occasion as 1) Ireland is primarily and first to be hit and always was and 2) This didn't look like anything major when they did call it. It's not a perfect science, on this occasion I think the Irish Met were correct to wait.
Rain updated
AROME very strong gusts especially first half of the day, could be Orange for parts of Munster and Leinster. Morning to early afternoon very strong in the SW, another bit of upgrade would give a Red warning there IMO.
Very heavy wind driven rain in a short period of time, going to be some water flowing of the hills and mountains, passed over the river Feale in Listowel today, in flood.
Met Éireann Weather Warning
Very strong and gusty southerly winds, with some severe and damaging gusts.
Potential impacts:
• Coastal flooding
• Difficult travel conditions
• Power outages
• Fallen trees
Valid: 09:00 Wednesday 27/09/2023 to 15:00 Wednesday 27/09/2023
Issued: 15:26 Tuesday 26/09/2023
Don’t think I’ve seen orange for both rain and wind! It’ll be fairly messy tomorrow
I think given the timing of the warnings we are looking at school closures.
i think we should move towards school closures in the south now, people need to organise now
Looks to be taking a bit more westerly track looking at the latest Orange update West could get this as well.
Ya, it being valid when most kids come out of school could get closures.
This lazy commentary annoys me. I know @sryanbruen did up a storm chart 3 or 4 years ago clearly showing the 1960-91 period had more powerful storms. 1961, 1974, 1976, 1988, 1990, 1991.
Every weather event can't be discussed on its own merits but has to be evidence of Climate change.
The temperature upward graphs can be seen as evidence but not storms.
Not even a yellow warning for the west???
It's the increase in frequency and then the increase in intensity of the storms that is of note. I don't think they're suggesting that they are consistently more intense than previous powerful storms, just that there are more intense storms occurring.
I don't think there are more intense storms occurring though. We've had a lot of quiet winters like last year.
I think that could change yet
Lots of this atm
Margret in accounts said we can't drive tomorrow if it's red cause our insurance wont cover us.
To think we leave her in charge of the payroll.
Attach yourself to a kite and you'll be able to travel for free towards Scotland.
We'll be in a warning yet don't worry
ICON just out and if it's keeping to form by overdoing the gusts then the East may escape with the yellow warning. Outside the Wicklow mountain area nothing forecast in their run beyond 100km/h
FOTA in Cork closed tomorrow
Probably cheaper closed than the few stragglers who would consider going
Well after driving during storm Betty, left me feeling terrified, the rain, wind smacking the car and shoving it practically sideways, I think it would be wise to act cautiously and if you can work from home etc, then do.
Met Eireann are ridiculous with this. First it’s named by the Met U.K. and not them despite it impacting IRELAND more, now it’s clearly going to be a significant storm and they’re messing about delaying warnings and preparations. No awareness raising with the public re areas impacted such as heavily populated east and south coast regions. Agree since Evelyn retired they’ve dropped the ball re warnings. Why have a storm naming system with the U.K. and Netherlands if you’re not going to use it? They shouldn’t be listening to the trolls on here and online re it’s not bad in my backyard so therefore this storm doesn’t exist nonsense.
"No awareness raising with the public re areas impacted "
Why? Shur Dublin wont be affected much :D
Plus its only a bit of wind and rain, nothing unsual, same as when we were kids :D
You'll be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime performance of the Stick-and-Rudder Polka by Agnes & The Aviators. You'll leave that aircraft feeling like James Bond: Shaken, not stirred!
On a serious note, even though the winds seem to be generally aligned with the main runway in Cork, those winds look pretty nasty, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see cancellations tomorrow. Those windspeeds look high enough to turn a Cessna into a VTOL aircraft.
