As has been said before the Russian Arms industry is going to take a massive hit, their weaponry has proven to be no match for NATO's. And this damage is being done before the longer range missiles even get there. At least I won't have to read about the Russians having the second most powerful army in the world ever again. Putin probably believed it too because no one would dare to tell him otherwise. Anyone who tried to bring issues to light would most likely be fired too. It just shows starkly the consequences of a completely corrupt system.

It's parish pump politics at epic scale/ state level and an absolute failure of statesmanship. What difference does your minor gripe make to blatant evidence of war crimes, disregard for international law and humanity. It should make f**k all difference. You should be able to say "notwithstanding our gripe on issue X, we recognise that the conduct of party Y is wholly reprehensible and inexcusable and so we will side with those seeking to end it". But no, because, 21st century populism.
The background is a little more complicated. It seems that particular unit was more a case of Ukrainian nationalists taking whatever help they could get in order to drive out the Soviets. A bit like Finland being a de-facto ally of Germany for much of the war which we don't hold against them (Against the Soviets), and the unit operated under certain criteria such as "Will only fight Soviets." The division eventually became part of the Ukrainian National Army which was, of course, disintegrated by the Soviets.
So, yes, he fought for the Germans. But he primarily fought for Ukraine. It's easy to see how the mistake in judgement was made by the Canadian Speaker, especially if his service was characterised as "Member of 1st Division, UNA" (which is what the 14th SS was reflagged to). An error, certainly. Madness, less so.
I think it is more serious than that. IMO Orbán is just a little aspiring tyrant now, who is currently constrained and frustrated by his circumstances. His actions suggest he doesn't care about Russian war crimes.
Hungary may be an EU and NATO member but it doesn't fit inside either organisation any longer.
However it is not large or powerful enough to go it alone, and is ringed by the members of both. Orbán's only usefulness to potential "friends" he'd prefer [like Putin] and his only way to exert power internationally is as a spoiler and trojan horse inside both the EU and NATO (e.g. using Hungarian veto and obstructing or at least slowing down decision making as much as possible, passing on any useful info they can get hold of etc.).

I swung by Sky news early this morning for a quick hit of news before heading out the door for work. There was no mention of the War until you get about 7 or 8 stories down.
With the public becoming disinterested and the expected winter lull on the horizon I think the Ukraine and its supporters need to get the PR machine wound up to warp speed. The thinly veiled propaganda on twitter is not hitting like it used to. To their credit there is no shortage of shocking front line GoPro footage coming through, but the fickle public will very much forget about the war crime going on and turn focus to the impending festive season. People want to see blood for their tax dollars or at least the hull of an upturned Ris sian frigate bobbing around the black sea.

It's an ongoing issue, primarily related to a Ukrainian law from 2017, due to come into effect this year, that stipulates that from Grade 5 (basically secondary level), all general education must be done though Ukrainian (language subjects aside). Hungary's issue is that this prevents ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine from receiving their full education though their native language.
But I suspect that if this particular issue was resolved to Hungary's satisfaction, Orban would find some other reason to withhold his support for Ukraine's sovereignty.
What's funnier still is that the Ukrainians possibly planned it this way. They first targeted the secondary Black sea fleet HQ near Verkhniosadove.
Then Sokolov and his acolytes convene a few days later in Sevastapol to discuss the strike. Potentially even talking about how to decentralize their operations so as to avoid being targetted right as a storm shadow enters the building.
