To Rome?
They will transit Rome rather than Dublin, with effect from start of winter timetable.
No loss really as it was a tech stop for fuel only and only in one direction. It does remove an early morning landing and take off which helps in a way
Such changes would be planned months in advance, slots, ground handlers, calculations on fuel cost etc
Ethophian fly to Rome already so it makes more sense commercially
Dublin is of course busier now in the early morning than when ET started to use it. Now, if they run late, they can get caught in the departure queue with everyone else.
It actually removes three landings and takeoffs each morning.
Are the Ethiopian flights currently counted in the monthly/yearly passenger statistics? Or as they are just tech stops are they excluded?
Some days four flights come through.
Not included in passenger stats I don't think because the passengers never get off or on.
They're included in aircraft movements.
It's an aircraft movement so it takes away 6 or 8 movements depending on the day
The used to go via FCO, then BRU, then DUB IIRC.
With the ongoing saga over flights with the DAA, FCC and ABP over the night time flights numbers etc. to get up to 8 slots back during the 11pm to 7am without lossing any passengers is a win especially with a lot of USA arrivals before the current 7am restriction. The current planning application will most likely end up in the courts regardless of the desicion by ABP.
Yikes, Ryanair cutting 17 routes and removing 19 eco friendly aircraft from DUB this winter, I presume 737-max?
Due to rising charges, the new tunnel, lack of infrastructure expansion at T1 and T2 and failure to implement reduced charges for quieter aircraft.
Might wake the daa up a bit!
Its Mick O'Leary playing the PR game, its winter there is always a massive step back in capacity.
Story really is other airports are willing to reduce charges if you use a quieter/cleaner aircraft and the DAA is not so the MAX fleet is being based at airports which do to maximise savings. Thats sensible business.
Aer Lingus does the same thing, the A320neo is used exclusively on routes to LHR where the noise charging scheme heavily favours the NEO/MAX over the CEO models
Standard Ryanair PR. Winter route reductions are not cuts, and then talking out of both sides of their mouth about investment.
Irish media has to stop just printing their PR statements as news
Not one article I've seen talks about what the 17 routes actually are. That says much.
This isn't the first time they've used their annual winter cuts as a stick to beat DAA with. It's tiresome seeing the media lap it up every time.
Interesting to see them complain about a lack of expansion plans for T1 and T2. Anyone who still pays much attention to their toy-throwing might remember that's the same T2 which we were told would be a white elephant and a gargantuan waste of money.
DAA's response is out:
https://www.dublinairport.com/latest-news/2023/09/21/daa-rejects-ryanair's-false-claim-that-airport-charges-will-increase-by-45-in-2024
That’s an impressive response to be fair!
Came across this which shows the the routes cut. Nothing too surprising like others have said natural for winter season.
The other question worth asking would be how mnay services per week FR had to each of these destinations - not daily or anything like it to most, I'd imagine.
Note DAA refer to the FR aircraft as the MAX - a term the airline has studiously avoided in favour of "Gamechanger" - again, the media have readily adopted the company's terminology.
Exactly. I am more surprised at them removing all the max aircraft though, considering the extra capacity they bring for busy routes and the lower charges for these in DUB that was previously announced.
They have made an announcement for PR purposes. I seriously doubt that FR MAXes will be absent from DUB this winter season. For one thing, they carry more passengers than the B738s.
"lack of infrastructure expansion" is a slightly hilarious reason for Ryanair to use when they've spent years objecting loudly to any infrastructure expansion. If they'd been listened to in the mid 2000s we'd never have gotten T2 because it was "unneeded".
Just checked the existing summer services looking at around 35 to 40 weekly flight with 4 of the routes not listed so winter reductions would appear to be the real reason I would suspect!
Bit of a knee jerk reaction this post is it not ?! it’s not like Ryanair has a bit of history in making stuff up or anything.
Disappointing that the media still swallow O'Leary's guff whole.
It's a pity Klagenfurt is gone. I used it last year for a ski trip and was extremely handy, train door to door. Tiny airport that takes two seconds to get through. I was planning to book on for next ski trip and the flights were all loaded up.
But yeah, a usual load of waffle and PR spin for FR. Those routes are most definitely the routes with the lowest advance bookings into the leaner winter months. Fares before they were pulled were €19.99 for 2+ hour flights. Crews are probably heading towards maxing their hours and they won't want to waste them on loss making winter routes.
Also, why does the DAA write its name as daa in these press releases? It looks stupid and incorrect. Anyway, side point I know - it just annoys me!
Probably for much the same reason as "Emerald park" has a lower case p despite it being the business name.
Someone in marketing thought it was a good idea :)
Bad enough when they do it, but when Irish Times, RTE etc. do it on articles about DAA[sic] it's aggravating as hell.
They are doing it because it is legally correct.
The company’s legal name is “daa plc”, all lower case.
