Ploughing championships 2023

Dont see any other thread on this title.

Are many people going this year? Kids are on to me to go but trying to put them off. Went last year and wasnt impressed. Looked at the list of exhibitors this year and note that again there are no tractors on display - Massey, New Holland etc. Is this down to the companies having it that good and not needing to put on a show or is it down to the championships charging too much?

On way home from and no problems other than being a bit mucky.had a great day just seemed to meet the right people and had real interesting talks.the fact that gear was slack doesn't bother me anymore as while I had dreams before there s very little I can see myself buying now.people on stands are telling us money is gone scarce this year but they that there s very little impulse buying anywhere nowadays. I do think there should be something done to encourage animals back to the ploughing,I really missed them.

Be very easy to believe actually. A persons time, diesel, skill, use of tractor for pulling. If you were desperate €70 would seem like a bargain to get out safely and in one piece. Not any idiot can tow- in a bad situation it can take a lot of skill and planning

Ah come on. Its a flat grassy field that’s gone soft. Not the middle of the bog. The slightest tug by a suitable vehicle would pull out any car.

Sadly there is always some gouger around. If some one was going around charging like that (and I don’t believe there was) then they are a c%#t.

I think it's quite harsh myself for someone to charge €70 to pull someone out of a carpark in a field designated for visitors to the ploughing match which they have paid to attend. Just find it greedy.

Went today. No problems in the car parks, fields seemed to have dried up a bit. Still very mucky in the venue itsself but thats no bother with the wellies. Was a smashing day weatherwise.

Much less crowds then last year which meant no queuing for food etc. Made a big difference. Lots of choice too. Also most reps had time for a chat.

One thing that did annoy me was the €10 for the kids rides. Seems excessive and real price gouging.

Very simple really. If they want animals back, then charge an appropriate fee to exhibitors. For a number of years now the largest sellers at the ploughing would be sports related tents.

Well, if you want to get picky, we could mention Thomand and PUC and Mount Juliet and Fota Island and all the other hotels that put on large conferences and other events.

There's no massive Dublin conspiracy stopping yiz from opening up an Irish NEC in Laois if that's what you want to do. The problem is trying to make it pay for itself for other 362 days of the year.

It didn't happen - Tuesday was the worst day, saw plenty of the lads not just towing people but pushing cars themselves; they mustn't have been too keen on the 70 odd quid because any one they got moving they roared them on to keep moving. There were plenty of people helping the NPA guys as well as they passed.

I'm not sure if you realise that actual ploughing competitions, take place at the ploughing match, so both grassland and stubble field's have to be in the vicinity of the trade areas.

Jesus 10 euro would be extortion. 3-4 is the general run of it in the funderland I was at a month ago.

There was a local lad charging €70 to tow out cars. He was a chancer and not affiliated to the NPA, or connected in any way to the event, the site, anything. He seen cars getting stuck going in Tuesday, and went down to help of his own accord, and was charging €30 a pop. He charged more by the end of the day getting cars out. He wasn't allowed back on Wednesday or Thursday after word reached the organisers. I don't know the man personally but am friends with his next door neighbour.

I think on one hand that he's a great lad and took an opportunity, while on the other he charged way too much and if he wasn't as greedy might have got 3 days at it

I had a good day there. Car park was a little sticky going in, but it dried really well during the day, think I was gone before 3pm. Got to see everything I wanted to without having stands and rows written down. Bought a set of Kaiwaka wet gear, if they don't keep me dry I'm f'kn moving. I don't know what the crowd number was but I found it really handy until about 1pm, got a bit busier after that but I was just rambling around at that stage. Weather was great considering it was lashing at home as I left and when I got back !

Only place you'd find muck would be after it falls on the ground from a animal's backside. All parking on gravel, purpose built site really. A lot of livestock at it & the rest. 4 day event & on a Saturday too.

I've said it for years about the ploughing. " a trampish day out" i understand the draw of it for some alright. But if you go to balmoral annually, you'd never consider bothering going to the ploughing.

Loads of other good shows on throughout the summer here, one day events, that are in local areas & should be supported & they then can grow from that over the year's.

@893bet I was looking at a video of that, wondering how it would work on sucklers. If it was a reliable thing it would be handy for sneezing weanlings. But you would be either brave or stupid to try it I think.

I had the same thought till I saw the price. It’s looks light enough. Not sure id risk squeezing an animal with it and it might not fit a smaller animal but if you were trying to tube a teat on a cow or clear a quater it could be handy if on your own.
