Jury duty

I got called for jury duty. I don’t mind doing it but i was called to show up in the republic. Im currently living in the north . If I attend the date on the letter , will i be be told that as I’m living outside the jurisdiction I won’t be eligible ?

I wouldn’t mind doing it . I’m surprised i got called again , as i was called years ago and turned up . The case didn’t go ahead but I thought the court absolved us from further duty

usually you're excused for a certain period, 5 or ten years maybe. i suspect it's only a really harrowing or exceptionally long case which would get you excused for life.

I don't think you actually get removed unless you tell the council to remove you

You can check the register online to see if you're still on it (presumably you are given the jury summons)

I think you're only excused for a period of time if it's been a serious or harrowing case.

Otherwise your name goes back in the pot and you can be called again.

OP, you must still be on the register of electors at the address the jury summons was sent to. Contact the local Co Council to have your name removed.

The only thing I can think of is I’m paying tax and claiming SFP , and my address for that is in the south . But everything else , licence car etc is in NI

I did it last year and got called for a case. On the second day the case was postponed to a future date and the judge thanked us for our service. We were told that we'd be excused from future jury duty for 3 years. So you are informed if you'll be getting a temporary exemption

None of them get you called for jury duty. It's purely from the register of electors, you don't get removed from it unless you tell them.

Nothing there means that you are not still on the register. Which is still the most likely reason that you were called. The registers are not updated much

I must check it out. I assumed once I was on the register in the North I would be taken off it in Ireland. Obviously mistakenly.

Local authorities in the Republic have no idea who is or is not on the register in the North, and vice versa. The two registers are maintained separately.

You can't do this by phone or online; this is to prevent people maliciously cancelling the registration of others. You need to write to the local authority concerned (by post or by email) giving details of your registration, saying that you no longer reside in the state, and asking them to remove your registration. They'll write back to you and confirm that you are going to be removed from the register. (This is the check that would alert you if you were being removed maliciously.)

It absolutely is how it works. A circus of wig-wearing clowns expecting people to drop everything and jump through hoops for a few weeks. Was glad my employers treated it with the contempt it deserved and sent a letter to say I wasn't available
