Saw a good breakdown of why the letters were made public. Seems the letters were appended to the defence submission from Masterson's lawyers, and they sought to have the submission sealed by the court. So those who submitted letters such as Kutcher and Kunis did so thinking they wouldn't be made public. However the judge said they wouldn't seal the document because there was no reason to.

It also showed though that Ethan Suplee had also submitted a letter of support, and part of his letter was quoted by the defence in their submission, however Suplee's letter itself wasn't included. This likely indicates that Suplee decided he didn't want his letter included and got the defence to remove it (but they failed to remove the part in their submission where they quoted his letter). There was some other similar case in recent months where celeb letters of support for some minor celeb (can't remember who, never heard of them before) were made public, so Suplee may have seen that and got Masterson's lawyers to remove his letter because of that, while the others failed to.

Previous crimes should only be taken into account in sentencing. Previous crimes are essentially a character statement. They will show if the accused is the type of person who does this regularly. They don't prove the the accused committed the crime. Just because someone committed a crime in the past doesn't mean they committed this crime. Likewise character statements should not be used as evidence in the trial. Just because a person was a saint in the past isn't proof that they didn't commit this crime.

Neither should be used as evidence during the trial itself. The trial should be determined based on the facts itself.

But both can be used after the guilty verdict to determine sentencing. If they can use bad things that happened in a criminals past when making decisions, then they should be able to use the good things too.

That's not what he said though. "He/she will be a heartbreaker when he/she gets older" is fairly innocent, usually just saying they're a cute kid, but not implying anything more than that.

"She's one of the girls who we're all waiting for to turn 18" is far more direct, especially about a 15 year old. It's far closer to implying that the person himself is already attracted to her, but because the girl is underage, not like he can do anything about it yet. It's a direct reference to the age of consent. So yeah, it's fair enough to consider them a bit of a creep at the very least.

The reality is the Helens did not like the fact he wrote a character reference - fair enough. But now they have deemed him worthy of cancellation so they are trawling decades old archives to make out he is a nonce.

Doesn't matter that he isn't. The problem it's not gaining any traction because America is pretty much done with cancel culture, I think the last straw was when they digitally removed someone from a movie on the back of a twitter accusation.
