Both are true. The red state brain drain is due to politics. The exodus from california is due to the high cost of living there.
A priest has promised a council planner that if she grants planning permission for a new church car-park it will bring her many blessings.
Fr Robert McNamara, parish priest of Lisdoonvarna, Kilshanny, Toovahera and Doolin in Co Clare, made the promise to the planner in an email where he said he was “perplexed” why Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) would object to his plans for a new car-park to serve “a little architectural gem” of a church in the Burren.
Fr McNamara has lodged plans with Clare County Council for the car-park to serve the historic 1878 Church of our Lady of Lourdes at Toovahera, Kilmoone West, Lisdoonvarna.
The car-park scheme is aimed at eliminating the on-road parking during mass times at the church which has become “in demand” for smaller weddings.
Fr McNamara addresses a council planner in an email and tells her: “I really hope that you do the sensible and decent thing and please uphold our application. I can promise you that to do so will bring you many blessings.”
Is that not bribery?
Which bit might be bribery? The priest's job generally, or just his conduct relating to the planning application?
An Israeli reporter dresses up as a priest, then goes for a walk in the, uh, Holy City:
Bribers have to deliver.
Was turning the dial on a non-preset radio yesterday for the first time in a long time - happened across some eejit saying stuff along the lines of "and he so wanted us to have this gift, that he risked his life..." Spirit Radio of course.
(a) Why do we allow our airwaves to be polluted with this nonsense. We don't allow normal broadcasters to push self-serving propaganda and one-sided political positions on us, so why give religion a free pass?
(b) Who is bankrolling this, and the other two that are on Saorview? Again we don't allow conventional broadcasters to be bankrolled by persons unknown to push an agenda.
(c) No he didn't risk his life, when you're god you can't exactly die can you? 🙄 and it's not like he was settled down with a wife and kids (afawk 😉 ) or had a steady job or anything anyway, if you've known your whole life that your entire existence is that you are predestined to do X and then Y will happen but it's OK because two (NOT three) days later you'll be up in heaven having pints with your da, then what are you sacrificing exactly?
Oddly I've never heard it described as risking before, it was always giving - which is even more daft because if you get something back you clearly didn't give it away, at least not on an ongoing basis... maybe this is an evangelical protestant thing, I don't know, or maybe they just thought it'd sound better on the radio and/or get the attention of people who'd never heard it said quite that way before (dang).
They got a licence from the BAI for a Christian and religious radio service. they are operating according to their licence.
Yeah I know that. The question is why are we offering such licences.
why would we not?
They are doing no harm really. You said yourself that you only came across it by accident so it is not like they are pushing it in your face. If someone likes listening to that nonsense leave them off
There is a thread dedicated to the question of Spirit Radio breaching their licence:
Talk about whether they're on MW or not is missing the point entirely.
We have one type of broadcaster which is quite restricted in what they do in relation to news/current affairs. They are required to cover current affairs in a balanced way. They are required to be run in an above board commercial fashion and their income from advertising and in some cases licence fee is regulated. They are not supposed to be there to push a particular agenda or the social/political stance of their owner.
We have another type of broadcaster which isn't subject to these restrictions, pumps out propaganda and runs completely one-sided political coverage including during referendum campaigns. They can be funded in an entirely opaque fashion by unknown groups from here or overseas and push deeply regressive and discriminatory social agendas.
The notion that this 'does no harm' is not one I share. Are those funding this sort of thing (and it's not cheap) really as stupid as some posters here seem to think?
I'd say the return on their money is small - but not zero.
There is enough religious content on the regulated broadcasters already without having explicitly religious propagandist broadcasters.
A secular state should apply the same rules to all broadcasters whether their owners are religious or not. But yet again we give religion (and only religion) specific privileges in law.
I suspect any private broadcast media is essentially only limited by legislation regarding incitement to hatred, discrimination etc... and that it is entirely reasonable to express a biased and even irrational points of view once they lie within what what is acceptable free speech and don't fall foul of the 2015 lobbying act. Publicly funded broadcasters such as RTE need to be more restricted as their remit is to serve the needs of the population in a rational and unbiased fashion. Personally, I wouldn't be in favour of a greater degree of censorship per se, but do agree strongly about limiting propaganda funded from outside of the jurisdiction.
Haven't ever listened to Spirit radio and doubt I ever will.
Shakespeare is from another time so is bound to be controversial today with what we still call “left” and “right”.
I don’t see any mention of religion in the article about Florida. But modern ideologies can have equally religious like fervor (without the supernatural stuff)
E.g. trigger warnings in colleges for Shakespeare plays:
Shakespeare was a racist, etc

Schools are back, so is Enoch Burke.
https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/enoch-burke-back-at-school-he-was-sacked-from-for-new-term-as-fines-pass-148000/a2095909049.html
"Former teacher Enoch Burke has returned to the school that sacked him in what is seen as a pledge to continue his protest at his dismissal. As the new term began today, Mr Burke arrived and took up position in a corridor in the school. [...]
The daily fines on the contempt matter are still accumulating however, and Mr Burke’s fines now total €148,400. On top of that he has been ordered by the High Court to pay €15,000 in damages for trespass, and is facing a six-figure legal bill, as the court awarded the school its legal costs in injunctions proceedings."
Hmm... not sure if this is appropriate for this thread, kind of crossover-ish from general whacko US conservative politics discussions:
Nuns and a bishop at each other's throats deep in the heart of Texas. Whacko priests chime in, the Vatican, the police, drug use, possible illicit sex, very amusing in total:
"And then, in 2022, Olson forced out the president of the local Catholic Charities because that president had organized a women’s empowerment summit—something Olson thought was “aligned with the principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” which, in his view, “are most truly hostile to the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
A charmer,
Even with mainstream religions now, it's not far off the point where only the whackjobs are left...
Whatever about the gospels but if you take the bible as a whole he is not wrong
Anything can be concluded from false premises.
If you "take the bible as a whole" you can't just dismiss the gospels. Christian read the entire bible in the light of the gospels.
Well that's the 'great' thing about the bible, it's got so much contradictory and/or plain mad stuff - you can find whatever you want in there for some emergency "appeal to authority" fallacious argument. A great example being how christians used the bible to argue for the abolition of slavery while other christians used the bible to argue against it.
I didn't dismiss the gospels but they are a bit softer than the rest of it. I would argue with your presumption that Christians read the entire bible. Most I have talked to in my life are clueless of the contents other than the best known stories.
Olson specifically cited the gospels though and it's an interpretation a lot of catholics (and perhaps the current pope) would not share.
No, the BAI rules on balance etc. apply to commercial broadcasters as well as RTE - and why wouldn't they? This isn't the US thankfully where right-wing sociopaths can broadcast whatever lies they like and call it 'news'.
So - some [m|b]illionaire using a commercial broadcaster for self-serving propaganda and promotion of a specific social/political agenda - Nope, not supposed to do that.
Some [m|b]illionaire using a religious broadcaster for self-serving propaganda and promotion of a specific social/political agenda - BAI say that's grand and we don't even have to know who is bankrolling this or whether they're based outside the state.
WTF (apart from the obvious) is wrong with this guy?
A row has erupted between Defence Forces veterans and a Monaghan priest over the use of the Tricolour in funeral Masses of deceased military personnel.
It is the practice of Fr Leo Creelman, a curate based in Monaghan town, to refuse permission for the national flag to be draped over the coffin during church funerals for ex-Defence Forces members.
Hmm, foreward on from 'BAI Code of Fairness, Objectivity & Impartiality in News and Current Affairs' suggests this is a recommended code of conduct rather than a legally binding set of rules.

Online Xtian 'influencer' who had a 2million subscriber Youtube channel where it shared parenting advice and a later podcast 'for moms' arrested for felony child abuse. Qu'elle surprise:
"In one 2018 episode, for example, Franke used a monologue to explain how “pain is meant to be a teacher” for children. “It’s not your nemesis. It’s your ally,” she said. “Pain is not bad. It is here to temper you and teach you and humble you and refine you and create wisdom in you." No pain, no gain, sonny! Down and give me 20!
