A priest has promised a council planner that if she grants planning permission for a new church car-park it will bring her many blessings.
Fr Robert McNamara, parish priest of Lisdoonvarna, Kilshanny, Toovahera and Doolin in Co Clare, made the promise to the planner in an email where he said he was “perplexed” why Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) would object to his plans for a new car-park to serve “a little architectural gem” of a church in the Burren.
Fr McNamara has lodged plans with Clare County Council for the car-park to serve the historic 1878 Church of our Lady of Lourdes at Toovahera, Kilmoone West, Lisdoonvarna.
The car-park scheme is aimed at eliminating the on-road parking during mass times at the church which has become “in demand” for smaller weddings.
Fr McNamara addresses a council planner in an email and tells her: “I really hope that you do the sensible and decent thing and please uphold our application. I can promise you that to do so will bring you many blessings.”

Was turning the dial on a non-preset radio yesterday for the first time in a long time - happened across some eejit saying stuff along the lines of "and he so wanted us to have this gift, that he risked his life..." Spirit Radio of course.
(a) Why do we allow our airwaves to be polluted with this nonsense. We don't allow normal broadcasters to push self-serving propaganda and one-sided political positions on us, so why give religion a free pass?
(b) Who is bankrolling this, and the other two that are on Saorview? Again we don't allow conventional broadcasters to be bankrolled by persons unknown to push an agenda.
(c) No he didn't risk his life, when you're god you can't exactly die can you? 🙄 and it's not like he was settled down with a wife and kids (afawk 😉 ) or had a steady job or anything anyway, if you've known your whole life that your entire existence is that you are predestined to do X and then Y will happen but it's OK because two (NOT three) days later you'll be up in heaven having pints with your da, then what are you sacrificing exactly?
Oddly I've never heard it described as risking before, it was always giving - which is even more daft because if you get something back you clearly didn't give it away, at least not on an ongoing basis... maybe this is an evangelical protestant thing, I don't know, or maybe they just thought it'd sound better on the radio and/or get the attention of people who'd never heard it said quite that way before (dang).
They got a licence from the BAI for a Christian and religious radio service. they are operating according to their licence.

We have one type of broadcaster which is quite restricted in what they do in relation to news/current affairs. They are required to cover current affairs in a balanced way. They are required to be run in an above board commercial fashion and their income from advertising and in some cases licence fee is regulated. They are not supposed to be there to push a particular agenda or the social/political stance of their owner.
We have another type of broadcaster which isn't subject to these restrictions, pumps out propaganda and runs completely one-sided political coverage including during referendum campaigns. They can be funded in an entirely opaque fashion by unknown groups from here or overseas and push deeply regressive and discriminatory social agendas.
The notion that this 'does no harm' is not one I share. Are those funding this sort of thing (and it's not cheap) really as stupid as some posters here seem to think?

There is enough religious content on the regulated broadcasters already without having explicitly religious propagandist broadcasters.
A secular state should apply the same rules to all broadcasters whether their owners are religious or not. But yet again we give religion (and only religion) specific privileges in law.
I suspect any private broadcast media is essentially only limited by legislation regarding incitement to hatred, discrimination etc... and that it is entirely reasonable to express a biased and even irrational points of view once they lie within what what is acceptable free speech and don't fall foul of the 2015 lobbying act. Publicly funded broadcasters such as RTE need to be more restricted as their remit is to serve the needs of the population in a rational and unbiased fashion. Personally, I wouldn't be in favour of a greater degree of censorship per se, but do agree strongly about limiting propaganda funded from outside of the jurisdiction.

Well that's the 'great' thing about the bible, it's got so much contradictory and/or plain mad stuff - you can find whatever you want in there for some emergency "appeal to authority" fallacious argument. A great example being how christians used the bible to argue for the abolition of slavery while other christians used the bible to argue against it.
I didn't dismiss the gospels but they are a bit softer than the rest of it. I would argue with your presumption that Christians read the entire bible. Most I have talked to in my life are clueless of the contents other than the best known stories.
